00:05 DaemonFC; But you know, the perverts are like Chris Cuomo and that guy that was paying women to send their underage daughters to him. They had their own mini-Epstein and it barely got coverage anywhere.
00:09 DaemonFC; Anything sex-related tends to get false equivalence as far as scandal goes.

11:29 schestowitz_TR2; amazon :-)
11:29 DaemonFC; I don't know what Amazon's definition of "refurbished" is, but the generally accepted one at least used to be "Should be indistinguishable from buying a new unit, but legalities prohibit them from calling it that.".

11:30 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, Packard Bell used to take customer returns and fix them and then sell the computer as new.

11:31 DaemonFC; I remember my parents buying a refurbished Hoover vacuum cleaner there that was about half the price. It worked fine for many years.
11:31 DaemonFC; So obviously they got a good deal on that.
11:32 DaemonFC; That was back when people still took their vacuum to the repair shop if it broke down, and when the thing worked so wall that you could look at the carpet and see where you'd been already.
11:32 DaemonFC; *well
11:32 DaemonFC; Today you get a vacuum cleaner and it's all shitty and made in China most of the time.
11:33 DaemonFC; If anything happens to it, you throw the whole machine in a dumpster. Mom got a $700 vacuum that broke down and then threw it out a year later when it broke down.
11:35 DaemonFC; I asked her if she spent $700 on the vacuum why she didn't take it to the vacuum repair shop and she said "The guy wanted $100 to look at it and tell me what was wrong, and that was before he fixed it and it's not a car! The guy I go to church with said the $50 vacuum I replaced it with could break down and go in the trash every year and I still wouldn't be out $700 for the vacuum!".
11:35 DaemonFC; I said, "The $100 is usually a diagnostic fee and sometimes you get it back if you have them repair it. They just don't want you wasting their time if you're not going to get it repaired there. It may have only been a broken belt, which is like $10.".
11:36 DaemonFC; Oh, $700 vacuum in the trash without even looking at it.
11:36 DaemonFC; Now she can't afford to just pick up and move out on this bastard of a landlord she has.
11:39 DaemonFC; Typical boomer. "Oh this guy wants to be paid for his work. I'll just chuck it and spend more money on another one that'll break down!".
11:40 DaemonFC; Boomers tend to be horrible with finances and in a lot of debt all the time for stupid reasons.
11:41 DaemonFC; That woman she worked with gave her 2012 Chevy Malibu as a trade-in for $2,000 on the suspicion there might be something wrong with the transmission, without even getting a quote for the work, or a diagnostic.
11:42 DaemonFC; She spent $12,000 on a 2011 Ford Mustang from the same shop, which told her it needed a "timing chain" that they put in, and the engine blew up on her on the way home.
11:42 DaemonFC; Now she has no car at all and a $12,000 Mustang that needs a $5,000 used engine.

12:12 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, Yeah, I buy stuff from "Amazon Warehouse Deals" sometimes.
12:12 DaemonFC; So the box that a box fan came in got damaged.
12:12 DaemonFC; As long as the fan works, why wouldn't I want to pay 15% less for the fan?

12:14 DaemonFC; Claims to scrub CO2 out of the air.
12:14 DaemonFC; LOL
12:14 DaemonFC; Unless you're an astronaut, not having a CO2 scrubber is rarely an issue.
12:16 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, Mom asked me what I use in the livingroom. I told her "a fan with a furnace filter strapped to it and sealed in with tape".
12:16 DaemonFC; She goes, "And that works?". I said, "Well, it's not quite HEPA, but it doesn't cost much. It's literally a $20 box fan and a $10 filter you have to change a few times a year.".
12:17 DaemonFC; Just get the cheapest box fan that moves air around because even on the low setting, this thing can maintain the air quality of a room. You're not buying it to move a shitload of air and keep you comfortable so it doesn't have to be a performance model fan. It just has to move plenty of air through the filter.
12:18 DaemonFC; With no air purifier in my living room I can see dirt floating around in the air. It's so bad it looks like glitter if I turn on my phone camera and make a video.
12:18 DaemonFC; But the fan+furnace filter gets rid of all of that.
12:19 DaemonFC; MinceR said fans don't work. They work, until they don't.
12:20 DaemonFC; Obviously the hotter it gets, the less they work to keep you cool, until there's no point running it and you need to turn on the air conditioning.
12:20 DaemonFC; But if it's just mildly to moderately uncomfortable, getting some air on you can relieve that.
12:22 DaemonFC; Do they save you money? Well, where I live, there's about 40 days out of the Summer where air conditioning is not really necessary, but you do want some air on you. If you have no fan and turn the air conditioner on, it'll add $2-3 per day, so if you used the fan instead, it will pay for itself in 10 days, and then you'd still have the fan next year.
12:23 DaemonFC; Fans can also help the air conditioner cool you down better, so you don't have to turn it down as much to achieve the same cooling effect.
12:23 DaemonFC; The US Department of Energy has some interesting guidance on the air conditioner.
12:23 DaemonFC; They suggest keeping it at 78 while you're awake and 82 at night.
12:23 DaemonFC; I don't know about anyone else, but if it's 82 in my bedroom I can't sleep and I'm going to be madder than hell.
12:24 DaemonFC; They also recommended a smart thermostat. The electric company pays you to buy a Nest.
12:24 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, ^
12:24 schestowitz_TR2; sorry, hang opn..
12:24 schestowitz_TR2; I'm GIMPing something
12:25 DaemonFC; I laughed pretty hard at that. I know when I'll be gone all day and can flip the air conditioner off.
12:25 DaemonFC; It doesn't need to have a connection to my phone for that. It has an OFF switch.

12:26 DaemonFC; They already know a lot from smart meters.
12:26 schestowitz_TR2; "oh really? I didn't need this shitty gadget to tell me my PC is on"
12:26 DaemonFC; But this tells them exactly what you're doing.

12:27 DaemonFC; The Party would feel better about someone that can do two back to back terms.
12:28 DaemonFC; Vice Presidents don't have a good track record of being elected after the president's term is done.
12:28 DaemonFC; Sometimes it happens with coattails, like George H.W Bush.
12:29 DaemonFC; Sometimes the president dies in office and the VP goes on to win a full term.
12:29 DaemonFC; But trying to get elected after just being the VP for 8 years is not easy.

12:43 DaemonFC; I did not see that. I was just commenting that elections don't always go the obvious way.
12:43 DaemonFC; I still think Trump would lose if he came back.
12:43 DaemonFC; Most people don't like Biden, but they like Trump less.
12:48 DaemonFC; If they're still talking about gun control and abortion on election day, and the economy is bad, they're going to lose a lot of seats in Congress.
12:48 DaemonFC; But most presidents lose a lot of seats in Congress, but then the voters are satisfied that they can't really do much anymore and give the president whose policies they just repudiated another term.
12:49 DaemonFC; So I think Biden will hang in there, but I also think we're looking at the biggest Republican majority in Congress since Gingrich's strategy against Bill Clinton in 1994 and 1996.
12:49 DaemonFC; The same thing basically happened to Bush, Obama, and Trump.

16:25 XRevan86; > The Hare runs like crazy through a forest and meets the Wolf. The Wolf asks: "What's the matter? Why such haste?" / "The camels there are caught and shod!" The Wolf says: "But you're not a camel!" / "Hey, after you are caught and shod, just you try to prove to them that you are not a camel!"
16:25 XRevan86; > This joke is a suggested to be an origin of the popular Russian saying "try to prove you are not a camel" in the sense "try to prove something to someone who doesn't want to listen", used in relation to violations of the presumption of innocence by Russian law enforcement agencies, or when someone has to fight the bureaucracy to get official papers proving that one has lost a leg or is even alive.
16:25 matey; yeah i was going to say
16:25 matey; there are idioms in english for people who just wont ever listen, no matter what you say
16:26 matey; but they come from a different angle, focusing on the person who wont listen, rather than the impossibility of explaining
16:26 matey; or maybe
16:26 matey; having to explain until youre "blue in the mouth"
16:27 matey; the most famous english example of this of course being the dead parrot sketch from monty python
16:27 matey; john cleese goes into a pet shop to complain that the parrot he just purchased there "not alf an hour ago" was stone dead
16:27 matey; and that the only reason it had stayed on its perch in the first place is it had been nailed there
16:28 matey; so the owner of the shop proceeds to argue with him and explain that "ees just resting!"

17:54 matey; "Marx assumed that the starting point of a movement in the direction of socialism would be a high level of living standards.
17:55 matey; Only by completely satisfying all the material aspirations of men and women will it be possible to arrive at a level where such aspirations cease to dominate peoples lives and thoughts, preparing the way for a qualitatively superior level of human civilisation."-- ted grant

17:58 matey; of course im talking about results. methods are complicated. results (real ones) are plain to see
17:59 matey; careerists make results complicated, because theyre justifying bullshit with more bullshit
17:59 matey; all theyre doing is holding people back
17:59 matey; covering up for the problems
18:00 matey; maybe they say there are problems, then they cover up for the causes of those problems
18:00 matey; and finally say "oh, its not so bad"
18:00 matey; as if people are too stupid to know if things are bad
18:00 matey; of course if you control communication, then you can make it look like most people agree with bullshit
18:00 matey; then people feel a little more helpless to state the fucking obvious
18:01 matey; not that such has happened to lieplanet, the fsf, or the founder of the movement
18:01 matey; oh wait
18:01 matey; yes it has
18:02 matey; there are absolutely people who are never happy no matter what you do

18:03 matey; even people who are wrong about the causes, the culprits, etc
18:03 matey; know that something at least, is wrong
18:03 matey; you cant rid them of that notion, it has to go somewhere
18:03 matey; they know (for a fact) that something is wrong
18:04 matey; if you prove (with bullshit) that it isnt x, y, z when it is actually x, y, z
18:04 matey; they will assume it has to be p. d. q instead
18:04 matey; because they know its something at least
18:04 matey; that much theyre right about
18:04 matey; if you hide the culprits well enough, people will make them up
18:05 matey; but theyre not making up the overall problem, theyre simply determined to find the fault somewhere
18:05 matey; the better you hide the real problems, the more people will come up with other problems (even imaginary ones)
18:05 matey; the suspicion of millions of people will flow somewhere
18:06 matey; even if it flows to nonsense
18:06 matey; fix the real problems and people will make up fewer ridiculous ones
18:06 matey; human imagination will not cease to exist, but the abuse of that imagination will naturally go back to reasonable levels (mostly)
18:06 matey; at least relativelty speaking

18:08 matey; i was actually thinking of the pandemic and the nuttier responses to that, but pocock works as an example too

22:30 schestowitz_TR2; yes, it's a DRM carrier
22:30 schestowitz_TR2; same with all that stuff that replaces headphone jacks
22:30 DaemonFC; I strongly prefered DVI-D and a 3.5 mm cable.
22:30 DaemonFC; I have no use for DRM and don't use it.
22:30 DaemonFC; There was also a standard for analog audio over a DVI-D cable.
22:30 schestowitz_TR2; many monitors support neither dvi or vga
22:30 MinceR; DRM (HDCP) is possible on DVI-D, sadly
22:31 schestowitz_TR2; some support all 3 types
22:31 schestowitz_TR2; but can be expensive
22:31 DaemonFC; So it's not even like you needed HDMI for a unified cable.

22:31 MinceR; (and it had only VGA and DVI-D inputs, iirc)

22:32 DaemonFC; And if it's not DRM'd enough, your shit won't work because Hollywood.
22:32 DaemonFC; Fuck them
22:32 schestowitz_TR2; the cables can be very sensitive and get 'confused'
22:32 schestowitz_TR2; I still get trouble with these
22:32 schestowitz_TR2; like after booting it would not "pick up"
22:32 MinceR; DVI-D cables probably have the same issues regarding bandwidth and versions
22:33 DaemonFC; Oh yes, that reminds me. When I connected my Windows 8.1 over Nvidia's HDCP compliant port to my HDCP compliant TV, Amazon told me I needed to ditch Firefox and come back in Internet Explorer.

23:49 DaemonFC; SBC @ 384k is like, oh, MP3 @ 128k. It's not a good way to stream, especially since what you're streaming is probably already lossy encoded anyway.
23:50 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, I likened using SBC and Bluetooth to converting a WMA file to MP3 because Microsoft had another music store fail and it was the only way to keep your music (with the intermediate step being burn a CD you don't even want and kill the planet).
