02:08 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, Which one?
02:08 DaemonFC; I see HP went with one of the worst possible distributions like OEMs tend to.
02:09 MinceR; it's a good fit for the worst possible firmware that they like to use
02:09 DaemonFC; Pop_OS is like one of those ones that doesn't care that their themes and packages are broken.
02:10 DaemonFC; <MinceR> it's a good fit for the worst possible firmware that they like to use
02:10 DaemonFC; uEFI
02:11 MinceR; most of them are like that since 2015
02:11 DaemonFC; Not sure how that makes them shittier then most of the others.
02:11 MinceR; not just uefi
02:11 MinceR; some sort of hp implementation of uefi
02:11 DaemonFC; Don't they just buy that from a vendor and then fuck it up worse like Lenovo and Dell?
02:11 MinceR; the one where it wasn't important to make "legacy" boot actually work, only to make it show up in a menu
02:12 MinceR; but it really was important to play little tunes when you enter an administrator password
02:12 DaemonFC; LOL
02:12 MinceR; well, maybe they fished it out of a dumpster somewhere
02:12 schestowitz_TR2; DaemonFC: the speakers
02:12 DaemonFC; I've moved on to Donna Summer.
02:12 DaemonFC; I'm going to have to listen to everything on this.
02:13 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, I can't ABX between FLAC and 128k Opus.
02:13 DaemonFC; So I've just started batch transcoding to that.
02:14 DaemonFC; I doubt anyone will ever do a lot better.
02:14 DaemonFC; MP3 could allegedly do this, but it didn't.
02:14 DaemonFC; By the time it sounds good, you're only saving about half the space a FLAC library would take up on average.
02:15 MinceR; might as well use FLAC, then :>
02:16 DaemonFC; I've tested Opus extensively. It's not much more difficult to decode than MP3 is. Even in 2009, most hardware MP3 players were not using a devoted hardware codec, so it has no particular technical advantage on those if you switch to Rockbox and bring in Opus support.
02:17 DaemonFC; MP3 used to have the argument that everything else would run your battery down faster even if the codec itself was a lot simpler just because MP3 "cheated" by having hardware decode.
02:17 DaemonFC; MP3 is ridiculous for a lot of reasons.
02:17 DaemonFC; It does things wrong just because they could get more patents.
02:18 DaemonFC; There's a lot of undefined behavior forcing 2-3 different ways to do something, or something that's horribly inefficient but that's the only way to do it (like seeking, which is a total hack).
02:18 DaemonFC; Apple broke seeking because they just assume that you'll always use Constant Bitrate.
02:19 DaemonFC; Microsoft couldn't calculate the meaning of "frame" and so LAME had to implement less efficient coding to handle them without crashing Windows XP.
02:19 TR News; "So the obvious solution is less weapons. However, how does this solution apply to Russias war against Ukraine? Isnt it double-standard to call for less weapons in the USA, while at the same time demanding delivery of weapons to Ukraine?" https://blog.jabberhead.tk/2022/06/03/europe-trip-journal-entry-30-thank-you-for-traveling-with-deutsche-bahn/

02:19 DaemonFC; Between not being very good and Apple and Microsoft breaking it worse.
02:20 DaemonFC; The Opus decoding process is well enough defined that this can't really happen unless you just go off to implement it independently and do a stupid job of it.
02:20 DaemonFC; Which Microsoft might have done. Who knows?

02:23 MinceR; because gulag doesn't shit their pants from the thought of having to compete with other applications
02:23 DaemonFC; Yeah, but having to install third party applications over codecs is a very Windows-like behavior.
02:23 MinceR; :>
02:24 MinceR; i thought installing systemwide codecs was a very windows-like behavior
02:24 MinceR; people just switched to applications because the systemwide codecs route was so horrible
02:24 MinceR; just like everything you have to register in windows
02:24 DaemonFC; Oh, you mean installing the virus-infested codec packs?
02:24 MinceR; exactly
02:24 DaemonFC; I think things have improved slightly on Windows.
02:25 MinceR; yeah, because people just switched to running vlc or mpv :>

02:25 DaemonFC; It has system codecs for Ogg Vorbis, Opus, HEVC, AV1, and others now.
02:25 DaemonFC; So it's not as big of a disaster as it was when they were pushing their own codecs really hard.
02:25 DaemonFC; It plays FLAC too I think.
02:26 MinceR; yeah, MICROS~1 plays a tiny bit nicer when they're nearly irrelevant in a market
02:26 DaemonFC; Edge finally overtook Firefox.
02:26 DaemonFC; It's now behind Chrome, Safari, and Edge.
02:26 MinceR; that took some hard work from the folks at mozilla
02:27 MinceR; remove the extension API with which you could actually do something, turn the UI into a copy of crashium, then make it worse, then remove ALSA support from official binaries
02:27 DaemonFC; Mitchell Baker managed to turn Firefox into such a pigfuck with the "Mozilla Foundation" turning into something wholly irrelevant and half the time you don't even know what the hell they're even blogging about because it's meaningless.
02:27 MinceR; they finally deprived failfox of every advantage it had over crashium
02:27 MinceR; and then made it even worse
02:27 MinceR; good fucking job, mozilla.
02:28 DaemonFC; I used to tell everyone to just use Mozilla Suite, and then Firefox.
02:28 DaemonFC; And now I just don't have any real strong opinions about which major browser to use because they are all terrible.
02:31 DaemonFC; MinceR, I don't know why people reviewed the Bose dipole FM antenna so badly. It improved my reception greatly.
02:31 DaemonFC; Maybe they can't figure out how to place a dipole antenna.
02:31 DaemonFC; One women went into a three paragraph tirade about how Bose cheated an old lady out of nine bucks or something, I don't know.

02:39 DaemonFC; MinceR, I can't see what people were complaining about with the Bose Wave system.
02:40 DaemonFC; It competes well with most systems I've heard that are 5-6 times the size.
02:40 DaemonFC; The compactness is the main selling point, but it's easy to forget you're listening to a clock radio.
02:41 DaemonFC; I've had a clock radio about this size before and it was just...meh.
02:42 DaemonFC; They were good enough as a clock radio to wake you up in the morning or listen to while you were cleaning the bedroom out.
02:42 DaemonFC; But it wasn't something you'd enjoy in place of a Hi-Fi system.

02:43 TR Bot; The Story of the Bose Wave, the Stereo System Built for the Infomercial Era
02:44 DaemonFC; Yeah, I used to see Bose infomercials on the TV late at night while I was over at my first ex's house and I was like "Fuck, $899 for a clock radio?".
02:44 DaemonFC; They've not only gone way down in price, they've gotten a lot better.
02:44 DaemonFC; I went into a Bose store in 2002 and didn't remember being all that impressed.
02:44 DaemonFC; There was "a lot of sound" coming out of it, but it was more overpowering than enjoyable.
02:45 DaemonFC; In fact, it was so bad I was like "They should stick to ambushing people over the TV. That way it takes effort to return the damned thing.".
02:46 DaemonFC; People tend to say they like something when they have no choice or feel pressured to fit in. Because the alternative is to admit that they got had or go against opinions in ways that draw the ire of their peers.
02:46 DaemonFC; Of course, "find new peers" is an option.
02:47 DaemonFC; Starbucks makes okay coffee. It's not bad coffee. I'd never go in there and pay $6.99 for it except maybe once or twice a year.
02:47 DaemonFC; They sell an expensive "lifestyle".
02:48 DaemonFC; I'm guessing mom won't be doing that now either.
02:48 DaemonFC; She can thank that damned rotten landlord of hers that she was furious at me for insulting on Facebook a few years ago over one of his "immigrants should get out of our country" posts. (Trump voter)
02:49 DaemonFC; No, I'm not the reason he did this to her.
02:49 DaemonFC; He did it to all his tenants because he could and they don't have many other options because he and his business partner own half the apartments in the town now.
02:50 DaemonFC; Fucking crook.
02:51 DaemonFC; If you don't like Trump and you're not a Neo-Nazi, then you're kind of persona non grata in the Republican Party (at least at the national level, increasingly locally too).
02:51 DaemonFC; I'll be surprised if Richard Irvin pulls off this election, but he's saying what he has to in order to have a shot in a blue state.
02:54 DaemonFC; Starbucks is in big trouble.
02:54 DaemonFC; This economy is falling apart, everyone is having their rent and groceries jacked up.
02:54 DaemonFC; Their workers are finished with the low wages and want labor unions.

02:56 DaemonFC; I can't believe my mother is wasting her time on an $11 an hour second job instead of telling her employer to take a hike and going and working somewhere else.
02:56 DaemonFC; Anything would be better than a "church" ran by the mafia and pedophiles that files bankruptcy against their pensioners.
02:56 DaemonFC; You'd think so at least.
02:57 DaemonFC; She mostly needs a two bedroom apartment because she won't make my brother move out or get a job and pay part of the rent.
02:58 DaemonFC; If she needed a one bedroom, she could go back down to paying $500 less. If she made him get a job, she wouldn't need two.
02:58 DaemonFC; She's never forced him to grow up and he's 29 years old.
02:58 DaemonFC; This is tragic.
02:58 DaemonFC; Everyone I've ever been with has asked me what we're going to do about my brother when my mom dies.

03:14 DaemonFC; I agree with the reviewer who asks why the Bose Wave has a CD player and not Bluetooth in this day and age.
03:14 DaemonFC; Then again, I have CDs. It would be nice to have the option for Bluetooth even if I don't use it. It's like, super cheap to put Bluetooth in something and for MSRP of $500, it should have it.
03:16 DaemonFC; I suppose if TVs get super nasty I could just use them for the display and reroute the audio for what I'm watching through the laptop directly to the Bose.
03:23 DaemonFC; "Bose's early success with the 901 speakers and their later variations won them interest from audiophiles, but the company's decision to later simultaneously target the consumer market and keep their prices high led to continual skepticism from enthusiasts. (If you've followed Apple with derision over the last 30 years or so, it's kind of like that.)"
03:24 DaemonFC; When Apple started selling in Walmart I laughed pretty hard.
03:24 DaemonFC; Now you can buy your "premiums Apple products" where I get condoms, underwear, cat litter, and $50 Chinese car tires. Woohoo.
03:26 DaemonFC; I wouldn't compare Apple to Bose. Bose at least make products that work and don't really care what other products you try to use them with.
03:26 DaemonFC; Apple can't manage either of those, much less at once.
03:29 DaemonFC; I'm listening to Tango in the Night on the Bose. It's one of my favorite albums. Like, nothing on it is bad or so much worse than 1-2 other tracks that it stands out and makes you stop playing the disc.
03:30 DaemonFC; The Fleetwood Mac stuff I listen to is only with Stevie Nicks. They were pretty terrible before and after, so I don't see any point in wasting shelf space on it.
03:31 DaemonFC; There's very few albums that start out very strong and just keep going and can fill an entire CD and are actually pleasant to listen to that way.
03:31 DaemonFC; And pretty much nothing like that since streaming overtook CDs.
03:32 DaemonFC; This is one of the go to albums for torture testing lossy media codecs and speakers and headphones.
03:32 DaemonFC; If there's something wrong with them, this will flush it out.
03:33 DaemonFC; MP3 for example doesn't handle castanets very well.
03:34 DaemonFC; It has a big problem with pre-echo and really the only way to deal with them is give up and bloat those frames that they're in to overcome the artifacts. The fact that Opus handles them very well is impressive.
03:34 DaemonFC; Even pure MDCT codecs have trouble, but MP3 is especially bad at it.
03:36 DaemonFC; MinceR, One of my favorite design decisions with Opus is that the frame size is effectively arbitrary, but Vorbis has that as well.
03:36 DaemonFC; For some reason, MP3 didn't do that and neither does AAC.

11:05 matey; maybe pew has distanced themselves from bill gates
11:05 matey; and isnt just a mouthpiece for billionaires
11:05 matey; or maybe it suits the rich and powerful to make people think they hate each other
11:06 matey; though with the role that polls play in starting and extending illegal invasions and occupations
11:07 matey; im going to say that anything "pew" says about countries hating each other "stinks"
11:07 matey; The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan American think tank (referring to itself as a "fact tank") based in Washington, D.C.
11:08 matey; i mean, strike one
11:08 matey; i used to walk around those think tanks
11:08 matey; everyone of them is weaponised marketing
11:08 schestowitz_TR2; yeah
11:08 matey; the political military industrial version of marketing
11:08 schestowitz_TR2; lieke "analysts';
11:08 matey; arguably worse than regular "marketing"
11:08 matey; which i agree with bill hicks on
11:09 matey; when i was in high school, teachers were taking bets on what id be good at
11:09 matey; i slacked off in computing A LOT
11:09 matey; because half of it was typing, and you already know my typing is unparallleledd
11:10 matey; the one that thought she was clever said "you should go work for a think tank"
11:10 matey; i mean she was clever. but also a bit nasty
11:11 matey; The Pew Research Center is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization and a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts
11:11 matey; the Pew Research Center has been jointly funded by the Templeton Foundation
11:12 matey; this is good
11:12 matey; The John Templeton Foundation (Templeton Foundation) is a philanthropic organization that reflects the ideas of its founder, John Templeton, who became wealthy via a career as a contrarian investor, and wanted to support progress in religious and spiritual knowledge, especially at the intersection of religion and science.
11:14 matey; The French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) has been critical of the foundation for funding "initiatives to bring science and religion closer together."
11:14 matey; Richard Dawkins, in his 2006 book The God Delusion, interprets Horgan as saying that "Templeton's money corrupts science", and characterizes the prize as going "usually to a scientist who is prepared to say something nice about religion".[73] Donald Wiebe, scholar of religious studies at the University of Toronto, similarly criticized the foundation in a 2009 article entitled Religious Biases in Funding Religious Studies Research?
11:15 matey; so basically, pew (in at least one area) is working with biases they receive high-profile criticism for
11:16 matey; i think the odds of them doing this AND being in dc AND not being biased towards invasion is highly unlikely
11:16 matey; by "towards" i mean "in favour of"
11:17 matey; plus the fundies tend to support invasions more because every war is a holy war
11:17 matey; "A 2007 article in the Los Angeles Times described the foundation as having "drawn criticism for its early support of intelligent design""
11:18 matey; intelligent design, or let the churches tell science what to teach
11:18 matey; im happy to explore connections with religion and science personally
11:18 matey; but im against churches hobbling science classes in public schools
11:18 matey; because that would be insane
11:19 matey; and here is a pew funder censoring:
11:19 matey; In March 2009, the Discovery Institute accused the foundation of blocking its involvement in Biological Evolution: Facts and Theories, a Vatican-backed, Templeton-funded conference in Rome.
11:20 matey; so pew takes money from "scientific" initiatives that bow to vatican money
11:20 matey; i mean, the vatican has NEVER been opposed to science or anything
11:20 matey; so theres your pew research centre
11:20 matey; tbh its crappier than i thought
11:21 matey; im not usually a huge sceptic of polls. i mean, ive got other shit to do
11:21 matey; but lately ive taken notice of just how utterly crap they are
11:21 matey; its sort of a side-interest
11:22 matey; theyre used to make people think things
11:22 matey; like marketing does

11:26 matey; basically massaging poll results
11:26 matey; a million dollars worth of massaged poll results
11:26 matey; more than enough to be sure that if in office, bush wouldnt be leaning as hard on microsoft as happened during the clinton era
11:27 matey; as the doj is connected to the white house
11:27 matey; of course you know about this, but this is the game the pollsters play

11:33 matey; i dont really believe it helps microsoft
11:33 matey; they can try to use it, and would
11:34 matey; but imo the idea of big = bad and industry = big = lies goes back to some of the biggest industry lies people know about

11:34 matey; sure microsoft will try to co-opt it like everything else

11:47 matey; and relatively trivial to maintain
11:47 matey; i think most irc sucks as much as social notworking on average
11:47 matey; though it didnt always, and its not because of the software
11:48 matey; nor is the protocol to blame
11:48 matey; nor is it particular difficult to imple-- i mean theres a tcl/tk implementation of irc
11:48 matey; a client at least
11:48 matey; its basically the gemini of chat
11:50 matey; gopher even had an identifier for it
11:50 matey; (because irc is ancient)
11:51 matey; we will see if its justified
11:52 matey; adding a couple lines to rc.local in openbsd btw
11:53 matey; will give you extra vts, and if you like, it will make them 80x50 instead of 80x25
11:53 SomeH4x0r; I dislike ergo ircd
11:53 matey; because of some cert thing, right?

11:58 matey; software is too complicated, it doesnt serve the interests of corporations (or shills) when its simple or (worse) does one thing and does it will
11:58 matey; well
11:58 SomeH4x0r; Let's Encrypt + sts is clearly for censorship
11:58 SomeH4x0r; sts will be made mandatory

20:39 DaemonFC; The AAC profile in Bluetooth is only slightly better than the baseline SBC codec.
20:40 DaemonFC; It has some pretty significant downsides too. The logical thing to do for consumer experience would be implement Opus because of its excellent quality and low algorithmic delay.
20:40 DaemonFC; When you use Apple's AirPods with an iPhone, there's a jarring amount of algorithmic delay that can add up to nearly a full second of lag.

20:51 DaemonFC; After Apple had to pay Bose for settling a patent infringement case, Apple disappeared all Bose products from Apple stores, and when Apple customers got angry and started ordering Bose from the Bose store instead of Beats from the Apple one, the Apple store brought the Bose stuff back. It happened so fast that Apple reversed themselves less than 3 months in once audio speaker product sales in their stores collapsed overnight.
20:53 DaemonFC; "While Apple has tried to position their AirPods and Beats as "Bose killers", in my opinion, Apple only barely outperforms something you can find in the clearance aisle at the local Walmart under the Onn store brand, much less Bose."
