04:51 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], There's this way the world is supposed to work.
04:52 DaemonFC; To get anything you want, to get the very basics you need in order to live, you have to find a certain amount of money.
04:52 DaemonFC; And other people generally don't care about your quality of life or if you're even getting enough food to eat, so they try to push you down to take more for themselves.
04:53 DaemonFC; The vast majority of the world doesn't give a shit if I wake up and have a place to live or eggs and bacon.
04:54 DaemonFC; And most of the remainder is actively trying to kill me.
04:54 DaemonFC; So why, in this setup, do I care if I am causing some harm to befall them?
04:55 schestowitz[TR]; DaemonFC: rhetorical questionnn
04:55 DaemonFC; Because in the grand scheme of it all, when you help yourself to a book or movie or album you didn't pay for the rights for, some fat rich slob doesn't get another Rolex or heated driveway, right?
04:55 DaemonFC; I don't care.
04:56 geert; you are talking about how the world is rigged because of corrupt reasons disguised behind legit reasons, not just at point of money
04:56 DaemonFC; If they don't like the system, they should change it.
04:56 geert; you should care, but not for the enriched slob so to speak
04:56 geert; if you stop caring, real care that is, they kind of got you.
04:56 geert; dont worry too much about so called copyright, far most of it is rigged too disguised as if necessary for legit reasons
04:57 geert; patents, that crap, you do not need to do what many them goons want you to.
04:57 DaemonFC; Richard Stallman proposed an easy solution to that.
04:57 DaemonFC; An "art tax" so to speak, which would get distributed based on a popularity contest.
04:57 geert; many people got much clue about whats not right and how its often quite easily improved
04:57 geert; many the enriched slobs dont want that
04:57 geert; e.g. they fear they might lose control
04:58 DaemonFC; We could have something like BitTorrent that tracks what people are actually using, and pays out copyright royalties out of tax money.
04:58 geert; there are many options, many possibilities
04:58 DaemonFC; The reason it won't happen is because you have a lot of people who don't produce, but they get rich.
04:58 DaemonFC; Executives, managers, lawyers.
04:58 geert; but trying that without getting the corruption addressed/handled more properly, is like mobbing the floor with the faucet left open
04:59 DaemonFC; If all someone had to do was register their own works with the copyright department and get a GUID for it on a file sharing network and wait for the checks to roll in, don't need those suits anymore.
04:59 IPFS; IPFS downstream 60 minutes average 34.13 k/sec., IPFS upstream 215.23 average k/sec., average swarm size 0
04:59 geert; you get a lot of people that seemingly don't produce, but practically react that way to the goonish crap around them
04:59 geert; you get a lot of executives, managers, that point to the system, say they kind of 'rolled into it'
04:59 DaemonFC; Yeah, everyone sees themselves as important, usually, even if they're not.
04:59 geert; one should understand basic roles of functions such as money
05:00 DaemonFC; The temporarily embarrassed millionaire that cleans the toilets at Walmart.
05:00 geert; and seriously address corruption realistically, practically, adequately
05:00 DaemonFC; It's how people who will never have money are "programmed" to think.
05:00 geert; blaming the people meanwhile doesnt make much sense
05:00 DaemonFC; Then Roy suggests, helpfully, as if I had never thought about it before.
05:00 geert; money is rigged, corrupt shit. those who have money, get rigged corrupt shit
05:00 DaemonFC; "Hey, you know that time you dodged almost $17,000 in ER bills?"
05:01 DaemonFC; It cost them what, actually?
05:01 DaemonFC; At one point they offered to settle it for half.
05:01 geert; exchange money with the word turd, so to speak, and you get what i would like to address utilizing such formulation
05:01 DaemonFC; So how much would they have taken to call it good and go away?
05:01 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], ^
05:02 DaemonFC; Even if you can pay a medical bill in the US, it makes no sense to, at least not right away.
05:02 DaemonFC; You wait until they're sending you letters in "fire engine red" and then call to negotiate, on your terms.
05:02 geert; and people who get to realize, more or less, how and why the system is rigged and not for legit purpose, they often get to endure attacking tries
05:02 DaemonFC; They don't even like to admit it, but they almost always settle for 40-60%.
05:02 DaemonFC; Especially if they think that's all that's coming and you'll walk away.
05:03 DaemonFC; I was on Reddit just the other day, and a guy in ChicagoSuburbs was bragging that he got Rush to settle for 40% before turning it over to collections.
05:03 geert; also, it is not like you say 'are "programmed" to think'
05:03 geert; people get offered options
05:03 geert; and they tend to chose least resistance way IN THEIR VIEW
05:04 DaemonFC; I said "Yeah, and that's pretty typical if you negotiate. They send these freakishly large bills because some people are chumps and write the check.".
05:04 geert; ofc much of those views are not as accurate and informed as they might assume themselves
05:04 DaemonFC; The bills are to size you up.
05:04 DaemonFC; See if you'll pay $20,000 or $8,000.
05:04 DaemonFC; Or something in between.
05:04 geert; so its not the program that some try to implement in those people you look at
05:04 geert; it generally is their reaction to it, they feel they get offered options, and they tend pick least resistant/easiest way
05:05 geert; some understand that what SEEMS least resistant/easiest, will appear more difficult on longer term
05:05 DaemonFC; I prefer to sit back and take my time and wear the other person down.

05:52 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], The banks are more concerned with the macroeconomy.
05:52 DaemonFC; Like, when COVID happened and 20 million lost their jobs in a month or so, the banks cut credit card limits to the outstanding amount owed.
05:52 DaemonFC; Like, they knew that if everyone rushed to the cards and couldn't pay them back because there was no other way of paying their bills, they could lose a LOT of money.
05:52 DaemonFC; So they stopped that.
05:53 DaemonFC; But they don't act on a scale of one person unless they're going to cost the bank a fucking fortune.
05:53 DaemonFC; They consider people who run up $10,000 on each of their cards and end up bankrupt to be a pest.
05:54 DaemonFC; But they really don't do much about it.
05:54 DaemonFC; Now, there was a guy that got turned over to the US Attorney's office because he was out there saying on one loan application he made $60,000, then on another one that he made $440,000, and then on another one, that his only income was $16,000 in Social Security.
05:55 DaemonFC; And so they actually issued these loans and he screwed them and then they went "Hey wait a minute! That was a lot of money, and look at these applications..."

08:51 schestowitz[TR]; i might do occasional work

08:51 DaemonFC; "And, in fact, these researchers, like the researchers in China and New York City, found a higher risk for severe illness among individuals with Type A blood and a protective effect for Type O. Type A blood was associated with a 45 percent increased risk of having respiratory failure, while Type O was associated with a 35 percent reduction in risk."
08:51 schestowitz[TR]; being type a is bad for other reasons
08:51 DaemonFC; Type O for the fucking win. Whoop whoop.
08:51 schestowitz[TR]; mainly possible donors
08:51 schestowitz[TR]; and there are rarer types
08:52 schestowitz[TR]; that are not compatible with many people

08:52 DaemonFC; "But an even better way to get your blood type tested is to donate blood, which, by the way, is still a safe thing to do, even during a pandemic."
08:52 DaemonFC; I've been banned from donating blood.
08:52 schestowitz[TR]; they are inclusive
08:52 schestowitz[TR]; they take your blood
08:52 DaemonFC; They excluded me in 2003 for "positive HIV test".

08:52 schestowitz[TR]; so you don't feel excluded
08:53 schestowitz[TR]; "disposed for gayness"
08:53 DaemonFC; I went to get another test done and it kept being "inconclusive" for about 6 months.
08:53 DaemonFC; Then "negative".
08:53 DaemonFC; And all of the tests since were "negative" including the new ones which detect the virus directly.
08:54 DaemonFC; If I actually had HIV, it wouldn't just "go away" and certainly I would have some problems from 20 years of not taking any medicine.
08:55 DaemonFC; So either they gave me 8 fucked tets in a row or my body beat back HIV.
08:55 DaemonFC; Your call.
08:55 DaemonFC; But I can go into any blood donation center, give them my SSN and have them find me on the banned donor list because of that.
08:56 DaemonFC; I am considering getting a DNA test.
08:57 DaemonFC; They can tell you if you have that gene deletion mutation that results in not being particularly susceptible to HIV infection.

21:23 DaemonFC; MinceR, I destroyed the original metal band taking it off the watch.
21:23 DaemonFC; But that's fine. The entire watch was $29 and the band sucked anyway.
21:23 MinceR; you're so destructive
21:24 DaemonFC; https://matrix-client.matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/dbRRBZbwrNTIFXUthpjDEZzM
21:25 DaemonFC; MinceR, The whole point of the watch is that NATO straps look good on dive watches.
21:25 MinceR; :)
21:25 DaemonFC; The cheap metal clasp on the watch is almost an afterthought by Invicta and so even if you destroy that getting it off, who cares?
21:26 DaemonFC; I was already getting compliments on a $29 watch, which was funny.
21:26 DaemonFC; Nobody compliments a $300+ Casio.
21:26 DaemonFC; But you get a $29 Rolex Submariner knockoff and you start getting "Hey man, nice watch!".
21:28 DaemonFC; MinceR, Plus, the original band is another INVICTA stamp on the watch as if they didn't already put three on the rest of it.
21:28 DaemonFC; :P
21:28 MinceR; people have no taste
21:31 DaemonFC; MinceR, The Rolex Submariner and Sea Dweller are nice watches....
21:31 DaemonFC; But I would obviously never pay $10,000 to get one.
21:31 MinceR; they just don't work very well
21:31 MinceR; and aren't practical
21:31 MinceR; but hey, people with no taste love them!
21:32 DaemonFC; Probably the most I would ever pay if it said Rolex on it other than the fact people will pay a lot in general so they hold value sometimes, is maybe like $100-200.
21:32 DaemonFC; If they shifted production to China and made as many as people wanted, they'd be a $200 dive watch.
21:32 DaemonFC; You'd get them at any Zales or Jared.
21:33 DaemonFC; That would be the end of this $10,000 nonsense, and that's why they won't do it.
21:33 DaemonFC; MinceR, When they got to that episode of SG-1 with "Zales" as one of the characters on that trinium planet, I laughed.
21:34 DaemonFC; "I love your stores! They always have the latest Seikos and Citizens!"
21:34 MinceR; :>
21:37 DaemonFC; MinceR, I'm in on this Invicta for $43 total. And that's after I pried off the metal band and put it on a NATO strap.
21:37 DaemonFC; Before all this Internet stuff, watch companies got away with bloody murder.
21:37 MinceR; https://64.media.tumblr.com/e1b7f8b4196060ba1107a59394b7c107/b08d1ef8ba316707-62/s500x750/7d5e97930bbd473726ec6bce3dbbac1d237edef9.pnj
21:37 DaemonFC; Because other than the mall, where were you going to go? There was no way to compare prices and educate yourself and source things from China.
21:40 DaemonFC; MinceR, Another nice thing about NATO straps is if you chew one up and it looks awful, just replace it!
21:40 DaemonFC; They're only $6.
21:40 DaemonFC; Half the reason an old watch with a metal band looks like shit is because the band took a beating and nobody ever swapped it out for a NATO.
21:41 DaemonFC; Old Rolex watches with a lot of damage can go for half a million in cash.
21:41 XRevan86; MinceR: It's a coincidence, every single one of them :)
21:42 DaemonFC; It has to be the right model, but yeah, people pay a lot for them even with wear and tear, if they saw James Bond (Sean Connery) wearing THAT model in a movie.
21:42 MinceR; :>
21:42 XRevan86; The rule of big numbers, when there are many oligarchs many of them will fall out of windows
21:42 DaemonFC; If you bought a Rolex Submariner in the 1960s when Bond was wearing them and held onto it in mint condition, you could make a million dollars off of one watch at auction today, easily.
21:43 DaemonFC; Where Bond movies went wrong with the watch was when he started to wear those gaudy Seiko digital watches in the 1970s.
21:43 DaemonFC; They were advanced for the time, they kept good time, but they did not belong on the wrist of James Bond.
21:44 DaemonFC; A lot of stuff designed in the 1970s looks like shit and especially if it has a computer chip in it.
21:45 DaemonFC; It was just the most dark, depressing age for design in general, and watches suffered too, unless they had been designed previously, like in the 50s and 60s and the company just still made ones that looked like that.
21:46 DaemonFC; The Mr. Coffee came out in 1973 and a lot of those still work now if you have one, and just as good as the day you (or parents/grandparents) bought it.
21:47 DaemonFC; They didn't overdesign things then, and while they may have skimped on parts, you can do that sometimes if the thing is just not outright designed to explode and leak coffee all over your floor in 2-3 years so you buy another one.
21:47 DaemonFC; And that's how they're made now. This Jarden corporation owns the brand and you get 2-3 years and then coffee all over your floor.
21:47 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR],
21:47 DaemonFC; So I got my Moccamaster today.
21:47 DaemonFC; It brews shockingly good coffee, and all I put in it was the Dunkin Donuts Colombian Roast.
21:48 DaemonFC; Bam, out comes the best coffee I've ever had from an auto drip.
21:48 DaemonFC; Oddly, the European coffee cup sizes work out better.
21:49 DaemonFC; For 6 US cups, the ideal amount of ground coffee is 9 US Tablespoons.
21:49 DaemonFC; But with the European coffee makers, you put in 9 of their cups of water and you put in 9 US Tbsp of ground coffee, and it works out right. 9 cups / 9 Tbsp.
21:50 DaemonFC; Coincidental I guess.
21:50 DaemonFC; The metric system wasn't always so accurate.
21:50 DaemonFC; They act like they did Metric and all the problems went away overnight.
21:50 DaemonFC; But you have to legally define measurements in terms of something.
21:51 DaemonFC; So if you say a meter is the length of this bar of metal in a vault in Paris, and the bar expands or contracts with temperature, you've got a benchmark that changes, and every time someone bases a measurement off of it, it changes. The law changes the measurement even if the law doesn't itself change.
21:51 DaemonFC; So they start making metal bars as copycats of the one in Paris and they make them at different times and maybe there's also impurities in the metal composition in the copycat bars.
21:52 DaemonFC; So you start getting things off by centimeters.
21:52 DaemonFC; Does it matter? Yep!
21:52 DaemonFC; So later on, you have to redo the Metric system when better metalworking comes along, and you have to take a measurement of the original bar at a certain room temperature and say "This is a legal Meter again.".
21:55 DaemonFC; And so you have the same problem, just in smaller increments.
21:56 DaemonFC; As time goes on, hopefully you can get this down from +/- 2% to +/- 0.1% and then smaller and smaller.
21:56 DaemonFC; But the Metric system didn't appear overnight and remove all questions about measuring things.
21:56 DaemonFC; That's revisionist crap.

22:11 DaemonFC; MinceR, My automatic watch isn't that bad at keeping time, as those go.
22:11 DaemonFC; It left the factory uncalibrated, and it's a cheap "workhorse" Seiko movement that gets mass produced, and it keeps better time than a Rolex.
22:12 DaemonFC; Rolex will usually only guarantee that it is accurate to within 20 seconds +/- per day, which is absolutely horrible.
22:12 MinceR; well, duh
22:12 MinceR; rolex isn't for people who care about keeping good time
22:12 DaemonFC; My watch tends to lose 2-4 seconds per day, so what I started doing is....Each time I have to reset it I just set it exactly 1 minute ahead of the atomic clock.
22:12 DaemonFC; SO I have 60 seconds for it to lose before it actually starts losing time.
22:13 DaemonFC; And that'll be 20-30 days later most likely, so by the time I have to reset the date window, I could just set the watch 1 minute ahead of the atomic clock again.
22:14 DaemonFC; With a mechanical, obviously, the date window always cycles between day 1 and day 31. It has no idea if it's February or November.
22:15 DaemonFC; So you need to reset it to the 1st again 5 months out of the year yourself, or the date window will be wrong.
22:15 DaemonFC; But you can't set the date between 9 PM and 4 AM or you risk causing the watch to malfunction.
22:15 DaemonFC; Like you said, they're not the newest technology, but they still work.
22:16 DaemonFC; If you want great timekeeping and don't mind that there's a battery involved, you can get dive watches with quartz movements in them and put them on a NATO.
22:16 DaemonFC; And it'll still look sharp.
22:17 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR] was triggered when I mentioned the "watch that Bill Gates wears" articles. I guess I see why.
22:17 DaemonFC; Dude has $100 billion+ and can't get a NATO strap on his Casio dive watch? I mean, really.
22:18 DaemonFC; MinceR, I was shocked that for what I paid this thing was not a total piece of crap. The dial even works very well.

22:31 DaemonFC; MinceR, Some of Invicta's designs are pretty disgusting, and some "consciously borrow" from the classics without the hefty price tag (especially on sale). I've got my eye on one that is all over the place. It looks like they couldn't decide if was a Tag Heuer Monoco, a Rolex Submariner, or a Rolex Daytona and borrows some of each. And it looks like it actually works.
22:31 DaemonFC; They don't really do anything original, and if they do you'll wish you hadn't looked.
22:32 DaemonFC; But they often have popular models when they can pretty much flat out steal everything people like about other watches and wrap it into one model.
22:32 DaemonFC; So they're basically the George Lucas of watches.
22:32 DaemonFC; He had some bad ones (THX 1138) and then he decided to look and see what people wanted in movies and worked for other directors, and "Star Wars".
22:33 DaemonFC; And it's fitting that they have the license to make Star Wars watches I guess.
