It is a pad that's layered onto the seat cushion to detect not only the passenger weight, but if it's actually someone's ass or a bag of groceries or a child seat that someone stupidly put there even though that's illegal.
21:23 DaemonFC; The older cars just assumed that the driver wasn't a fucktard and enabled the airbag in the passenger seat without an on/off weight sensor.
21:23 DaemonFC; But assuming that someone isn't a fucktard if they can afford a $60,000 car these days is not a sure thing, by far.

21:24 DaemonFC; Another mod you can do if you don't mind that it's illegal, is you can put a dummy module in there and plug it into the wiring harness for the seat sensor.
21:24 DaemonFC; They're about $60, and it just tells the computer there's always someone sitting there and they have their seatbelt on.
21:25 DaemonFC; You just unplug the malfunctioning weight sensor and plug in the sensor emulator, and the SRS warning light should go off and the Passenger Airbag Indicator should always say "ON" even when there's nobody sitting there.
21:25 DaemonFC; The airbag will deploy whether you have a front passenger or not if there's a sufficient crash to set it off because the ECM will believe there is a passenger.
21:26 DaemonFC; It's something you'd only do because Buick stopped making the part and even if you can find one, a mechanic will bill you $400 to replace the sensor.
21:27 DaemonFC; THe emulator basically just constantly sends the ECM the signals for "Passenger seat: Occupied / Weight: Sufficient / Seat Belt: Fastened".
21:28 DaemonFC; It's a total hillbilly fix, but your airbags will deploy, meaning the passenger will be as safe as they'd be any other time the car enabled it.
21:28 DaemonFC; You'd have to put children and smaller passengers (under about 100 pounds) in the back seat to avoid the airbags deploying and injuring them, which is why shops won't touch these emulators.

21:35 DaemonFC; The problem with that is that they restrain you so you don't go flying through the windshield or into the dashboard (good) but in many cases, they also break bones, like your pelvis.
21:36 DaemonFC; So they came up with these ones that go over the lap and then come back up and secure your upper body too, and those are more complex, because they have an automatic tensioner.
21:36 DaemonFC; If you go flying forward, it locks into place to keep the top of your body in place, and they spread the force out over more points of your body so that you're less likely to have broken bones from the seatbelt.
21:37 DaemonFC; The problems are that people don't always use them properly.
21:37 DaemonFC; They set the adjustment so it goes up over their neck or they recline the seat.
21:37 DaemonFC; Then the thing doesn't work right.
21:38 DaemonFC; Also, the pretensioner can break and you have to get that fixed or the thing won't work as designed and could kill you.
21:38 DaemonFC; So then they decided on airbags. The early system was front airbags only, and it took them years to get that basically right or mandate it.
21:39 DaemonFC; The older ones started appearing on luxury cars where they could market it to rich people that they were safer in that car than if they bought a Chevy like some peasant.
21:40 DaemonFC; There were some problems though, such as the airbags deploying too rapidly, and injuring smaller passengers, or in situations like low speed impacts where it costs a fortune to get new airbags and repack them *and* it's more likely that the airbags themselves hurt you without causing you to avoid serious injury from the crash.
21:41 DaemonFC; By the mid 2000s, they basically perfected front airbags except for the part about they always deployed even if you had a child or a carseat in the front passenger seat, despite the owner's manual saying not to do that and the states passing laws against it.
21:42 DaemonFC; So the government made them install these stupid weight sensors so even if you do something illegal, the airbag won't deploy and kill the kid.
21:42 DaemonFC; Unfortunately, the sensor can malfunction and not deploy the airbag when you get into a crash and there's an adult sitting there, and they cost a fortune to repair, and they stop making the replacement sensors several years after the car goes out.
21:43 DaemonFC; So to save a few babies from their idiot parents, the government basically accepted that this system would malfunction and kill some kids between 11-18 and adults.
