09:53 matey; and thats a "buy in-game" cloud feature

09:56 matey; even with the github purchase, its a useful perspective
09:56 matey; with copper lines the solution is simple
09:56 matey; they dont want to maintain them, they let them fall apart
09:57 matey; everyone will move to coax (ip telephony) and fibre (same) and mobile for phones
09:57 matey; and the copper lines (pots) will fall down on their own, never to be put back up
09:57 matey; i presume someone will salvage them for scrap
09:58 matey; most likely the phone companies
09:58 matey; maybe theyll sell the lines to the power companies
09:58 matey; they have trouble sending electricity over coax and glass
09:59 *goosestepping_ has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s)
09:59 matey; coax would never work over long distances and glass of course is an insulator
09:59 matey; youd have to drop the current down to be both safe and useless over coax
10:00 matey; the reason they use high voltage is it degrades less over distances
10:00 matey; but copper is copper and the power companies could use the lines to make new ones, or something
10:00 matey; maybe theyll make pennies out of them instead
10:00 matey; or bullets

10:20 matey; /me runs 160 files with 60,000 lines of text including code through a variant of "uniq" and gets 11,000 lines from that
10:20 matey; uniq only removes consecutive repeats, which is often preferable-- this removes non-consecutive repeats
10:21 matey; if youre looking through 60,000 lines and have no use to read the same line twice, this is useful

16:24 activelow; this was another surprise, many typical GNU/FSF components arrived on the bullshit hitlist for removal
16:24 matey; devuan is trump, debian is hillary
16:25 matey; something like that
16:25 matey; im glad to be rid of them
16:25 matey; i wont lie, for years i thought nothing would be better than what debian USED to be
16:25 activelow; remember this, dvtm 47KiB, yaft 300KiB (including fonts)... with this i can compete against the entire realm of what X11/GNOME does
16:26 matey; and youre still going to be hard-pressed to find anything quite as wonderful as debian in say, 2013 (when it peaked)
16:26 activelow; not only compete, dvtm is the best terminal multiplexer ("window manager") i had seen in 25 years
16:26 matey; wheezy was as good as gnu/linux will likely ever get
16:26 matey; solid, modern, reliable, fun
16:27 matey; devuan still isnt there
16:27 matey; but since mincer still uses it, ill let him defend it
16:27 matey; i wont agree, but i wont say hes crazy-- mincers been anti-systemd since 2011 if not earlier
16:28 matey; i never saw it coming

16:28 matey; i was like" who the hell are you?"
16:28 matey; "im juggernaut, bitch!"
16:28 matey; uh oh
16:28 activelow; evdev/eudev/dbus ... all of this conceptually flawed, and removed... it was still possible to keep X11/Gtk, nonetheless, X11/GTK themselves are flawed
16:29 matey; that was 7 or 8 years ago
16:29 matey; seriously, what the fuck is devuan doing?
16:29 activelow; recently, evdev creeped into Xorg... i slayed this, Xorg still works
16:29 schestowitz_TR2; I used Wheezy
16:29 matey; no transparency, too much nepotism
16:30 matey; too much bullshit

18:20 matey; but that doesnt explain why dove (galaxy) doesnt make minstrels (if theyre not called galaxy its not like the name is the issue)
18:21 matey; minstrels are better than smarties

18:24 matey; theres a fine line (its not a powder, so a very fine line)

18:25 matey; mars bars have the same chocolate filling all the way through

18:25 matey; while a milky way (in the states) has that plus caramel inside
18:25 matey; which is lovely-- its just not the closest thing to a mars bar
18:25 XRevan86; > the US Milky Way bar, which is sold as the Mars bar worldwide, including Canada; and the global Milky Way bar, which is sold as the 3 Musketeers in the US and Canada. (In Canada neither bar is sold as the Milky Way.)
18:26 XRevan86; That's not confusing at all.
18:26 matey; its a bit confusing, because the milky way in the states has caramel
18:26 matey; and the mars bar (which you can get imported pretty easily, the real ones) doesnt

22:40 DaemonFC; I accused Batteries Plus Bulbs and Chouhan of using the telephone to "harass, threaten, intimidate, inconvenience, and annoy" me.
22:41 activelow; nice, got sixel-passthrough now, yaft+dvtm and w3m browser, not perfect yet, nonetheless, rather useful, for an admittedly tiny niche of develoeprs
22:42 DaemonFC; And said that he was committing the offense of "Disorderly Conduct" by way of misusing the telephone system.
22:43 DaemonFC; Not that the police would do anything.
22:43 DaemonFC; "WHY U NO FILE POLICE REPORT!"
22:43 DaemonFC; Also the police if you try to file a report: "What do you want us to do about it?".
22:44 DaemonFC; I've learned it's best to just leave the police out of it. I mean, you want to know what the police are like, look at the mass shooting in Buffalo.
22:44 DaemonFC; A store clerk called 911 while people were being mowed down by a domestic terrorist with an assault rifle.
22:45 DaemonFC; The 911 operator yelled at her for whispering so that the guy didn't hear her and come shoot her as well, and then 911 hung up on her.
22:45 DaemonFC; Then she had to call her boyfriend and explain that people were being murdered and to try to call 911 in another county so they could get the police in her county to show up to the store.
22:46 DaemonFC; Just in time for the guy to run out of bullets, you know.

23:09 DaemonFC; "And when you throw multiple cards with annual fees together, eventually you wont even have a good idea how much you really net in rewards points."
23:09 DaemonFC; None of my cards has an annual fee. That's non-negotiable.

23:10 DaemonFC; I considered one of those AmEx Blue Cash preferred cards when I had excellent credit.
23:10 DaemonFC; Then I calculated that even if I did earn 6% on groceries full time, the $95 annual fee still wouldn't have been worth it vs. a grocery card with 3% that I already had.
23:11 DaemonFC; Because I already had a 5% card to use at Walmart, which sells groceries, and doesn't code as a grocery store, so would only return 1% on the AmEx.
23:12 DaemonFC; The AmEx is only worth it for large families who spend a ton of money at an actual coded grocery store. And yes, Aldi and Sav-a-Lot even code as grocery stores.
23:12 DaemonFC; So the 6% on the AmEx will work on discount groceries.

23:13 DaemonFC; It's a lot of trial and error to figure out what things even code as sometimes, but all the grocery cards say "Walmart, Target, and other Big Box stores do not count as a grocery store and will not earn bonus points.".
23:13 schestowitz_TR2; you give them your ID

23:18 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, Which they have anyway if you use a debit card or shop online.
23:19 DaemonFC; If you write them a check, they know what you bought and whose name is on the account.
23:24 psydroid2; mutahar went out of sync in his video for me at least
23:30 DaemonFC; "The danger with a Secured Card is that if you default, the bank can take your deposit, report the entire balance to the credit bureaus anyway, and then sue you for the entire amount on top of keeping your deposit, so the risk is yours, and its guaranteed money for the bank. This is why most Secured Cards approve everyone. But it still looks like a tradeline, just as any other credit card would."
23:33 DaemonFC; You're not asking the bank to risk their money, you're asking them to let you risk your own money, a few times over, with the security deposit guaranteed to cover any actual loss you cause.
23:33 DaemonFC; So of course they issue you a "credit card".
23:33 DaemonFC; But as bad a deal as that is, there's worse.
23:34 DaemonFC; There's "credit builder loans" where you deposit money, and they freeze it and then it looks like a loan you make, with interest payments, and then they give you the original amount of the deposit back.
23:34 DaemonFC; This is how badly people need credit to function in this country, and it's not at all clear that credit builder loans actually help much.
23:35 DaemonFC; You still have a bankruptcy on file, and all the lenders know what that loan is, even if it is reporting on your credit file.
23:35 DaemonFC; In the mean time, you have thousands of dollars tied up and may get into actual trouble again with real bills.
23:36 DaemonFC; My bankruptcy attorney tried to refer me to some of those when I got my discharge letter. I told her I was aware of them and I felt they were exploitative and dangerous, and had a plan to rebuild my credit at no expense.
