02:41 activelow; if i modify any GPL2 licensed library, then without doubt GPL2 applies with copyleft etc,; yet when linking against GPL2 library (without modification to any such GPL2 library or it's header), the license terms are _undefined_
02:42 matey; 2. b) You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third parties under the terms of this License.
02:42 TR News; Yesterday's bulletin is now ready! : http://techrights.org/txt-archives/techrights-2022-04-13.txt | gemini://gemini.techrights.org/tr_text_version/techrights-2022-04-13.txt (tentative address, to work an hour from now)
02:42 matey; linking is considered a derivative.
02:42 matey; if all you have to do for it NOT to be a derivative is shove it in a separate file, what good is that?
02:42 activelow; 2. b) contradicts "author's rights", which is the author decides upon the license terms of his _own_ work
02:43 matey; the author doesnt have a right to determin the license of OTHER works
02:43 activelow; and next, linking is an _insufficient_ criteria to decide wether any program is a derivative work or not
02:44 matey; if its not sufficient, then there is a giant loophole that makes the license pointless.
02:44 matey; as far as authors rights, the author has a right to choose gpl if they want to use the gpl work in their software.
02:44 matey; or create a derivative.
02:45 matey; they also have a right to not choose gpl, and not have access to the gpl work,
02:45 matey; but they dont have the right to relicense the gpl work (and thats also because authors rights includes the rights to choose gpl)
02:45 activelow; again, this misses the question if _linking_ suffices to define "derivative work", which it doesn't; linking is a necessary criteria, yet it is insufficient
02:46 matey; again, this misses the question if _linking_ suffices to define "derivative work", which it doesn't; linking is a necessary criteria, yet it is insufficient <- so if you choose a license...
02:46 activelow; linking against a library does _not_ relicense such library
02:46 matey; but it violates the license of that library
02:47 matey; which says what terms the library can be used under
02:47 activelow; no, a license does _not_ define what a derivative work is, in particular GPL2 which does not explicitey forbid linking proprietary, it simply doesn't
02:47 matey; a license does _not_ define what a derivative work is <- but linking is derivative regardless
02:47 matey; which does not explicitey forbid linking proprietary <- it forbids non-free derivatives
02:48 activelow; which opens a gigantic loophole, for both, undesirable linking, or undesirable sanctioning of it
02:49 activelow; and wrong again, it forbids non-free derivatives for a library itself, which is clearly stated within the license, yet it does not explicitely forbid linking into proprietary
02:49 activelow; and linking is not a sufficient criteria to define a derivative work
02:50 activelow; the loophole being, if the definition of a derivative work was strict, any GPL program couldn't be run on any IBM MS Wintel system (typically compilers/libc add proprietary stuff to achieve this)

02:52 activelow; if this is an explanation, then it could be contained _within_ the GPL2 license terms, yet it isn't.
02:53 activelow; *below
02:54 matey; the license states what youre able to do
02:54 matey; the explaination just makes it easier for people to understand
02:54 matey; the other thing that matters is what happens when these things go to court
02:54 matey; that cant be included in the license itself
02:54 matey; but it affects our understanding of how the license works
02:54 activelow; the cornerstone of proof seems to be, GPL2 programs being available for ms windows, which they can't be, without linking into proprietary stuff
02:55 matey; if the program is separate, its not derivative
02:55 matey; if its linked, its not separate
02:55 matey; using gpl software on windows is okay
02:55 matey; linking works in two directions
02:55 matey; a gpl program can link to the winapi
02:55 activelow; "General Public License does not permit incorporating your program into proprietary programs"; well, it does _not_ forbid it. doesn't it?
02:56 matey; the winapi cannot link to a gpl program
02:56 activelow; and this "explanation" isn't at least part of the license text itself, to repeat myself
02:56 matey; "General Public License does not permit incorporating your program into proprietary programs"; well, it does _not_ forbid it. doesn't it? <- same thing in lawyerese.
02:56 matey; does not permit = it is not permitted = it is forbidden

02:59 activelow; the "explanation" is irelevant, because it isn't contained within the license text added to source files
02:59 MinceR; indeed
02:59 activelow; and the license terms are only clarified upon of what's recognized as a "derivative work"; yet linking into non-free does not suffice as a criteria for a "derivative work"
02:59 MinceR; also, afaik they don't give a legal definition for what "proprietary" is anyway
03:00 MinceR; afaik linking is considered to produce a derivative work, bit IANAL
03:01 activelow; imagine this, if i wanted to publish (and only then copyleft enforcement is relevant, simply modifying some source text on my local pc does not enforce copyleft, even whem GPL2 implies differently)
03:01 activelow; yet, if i published, i couldn't at least be certain, copyleft remained intact if any of my lib was linked into proprietary, for both technical and legal reasons

03:10 activelow; if linking is considered sufficient to define a "derivative work" of any gpl2 piece, then this contradicts the fact gpl2 programs are available for ms windows; you can't have both.
03:11 activelow; in this case, such a gpl2 program at least requires some proprietary libc linked against, which then "incorporated" gpl2 into proprietary software
03:12 DaemonFC; Mom's always surprised she has all these horrendous car repair bills.

03:18 *alextee has quit (connection closed)
03:19 activelow; long story short, linking is a necessary criteria, yet it is _insufficient_; and lgpl2 doesn't address this issue either, to explicitely _forbid_ (not permit) linking with a clear definition this sufficiently defined a derivative work
03:22 activelow; if this "explanation" was contained within the license therms, i would feel comfortable with regards to clarity of license terms: "General Public License does not permit incorporating your program into proprietary programs"
03:22 activelow; nonetheless, the gpl2 does _not_ contain it
03:22 mjg59_; activelow: That's what the system library exception is for
03:22 mjg59_; It lets you distribute GPLed code for proprietary operating systems
03:23 mjg59_; "However, as a special exception, the source code distributed need not include anything that is normally distributed (in either source or binary form) wiith the major components (compiler, kernel and so on) of the operating system"
03:24 mjg59_; So there's no conflict in the FSF's assertion about derivation here
03:24 activelow; the uncertainty of GPL2 (3?) cannot be removed, as soon as any such piece of GPL software is touched, which is the critical aspect of GPL
03:25 *mimorek has quit (Quit: Leaving)
03:25 activelow; i do _not_ want any program of mine being available to MS/IBM Wintel
03:26 activelow; the only options FSF offers then is: touch none of GPL/LGPL
03:27 mjg59_; When you say that, do you object to the platform on principle or do you object because they're non-free?
03:28 activelow; technical qualities of the platform, legal issues, and US politics
03:28 mjg59_; Ok, that sounds like a violation of freedom 0
03:29 activelow; the presence of GPL inside MS/IBM Wintel realm itself is a violation of the license ("incorporation")
03:30 mjg59_; No it isn't
03:32 activelow; the advertising clause of BSD was neat, since BSD license must be "advertised", yet advertising requires the permission of the author; and this at least is compatible with "author's rights"
03:33 mjg59_; You're getting very close to a Joerg Schilling interpretation of the GPL, and that did not end well
03:48 activelow; i think, the GPL2 (3?) copyleft are _weaker_ than i expected
03:49 activelow; GPL2 copyleft in the hands of some free developer are practically ineffective often, given the fact how often documentation of sources are missing, to support some hardware etc.
03:50 activelow; and since corporations control alot of what's GPL, it is those corporations who can enforce
03:51 activelow; "communities"
03:52 mjg59_; Anyone who contributes to a GPLed project is in a position to enforce, as long as there's no CLA required

07:19 matey; i want a collective. a federatio <- ive been talking about a federation for years
07:20 leah; oh sorry, i misread
07:20 matey; in fact ill explain how and why i started talking about a federation
07:20 leah; "one of many" is what you actually wrote
07:20 matey; i misread <- no worries at all
07:20 leah; "many" is the keyword here
07:20 matey; originally i intended to "fork" the fsf
07:20 leah; don't bother. let it rot
07:20 matey; then i wanted to make my fork easier for other people to fork.
07:20 leah; the federation will come
07:20 matey; yes
07:20 leah; it's already here
07:20 leah; someone just needs to put a name on it
07:21 leah; i've moved the date for launching fedfree to summer of 2022
07:21 matey; then i decided that people had no interest in forking the fsf
07:21 matey; well what youre doing does more to fulfill what ive been talking about than it contradicts it
07:21 matey; i never imagined that every "node" would be the same
07:22 matey; rather that each would have strengths and weaknesses
07:22 matey; and that the federation (the whole) would fuse those together-- like the movement itself is intended to (even the original movement)
07:22 matey; but since forking an organisation is boring and no fun, i figured there should be a "lighter-weight option" even years ago
07:23 matey; and that these satellite mini-orgs, or "labs" instead of forking an entire org, could join together under "umbrella orgs" which were larger and cared about more mundane organisational tasks
07:24 matey; of course this is all probably more elaborate than it needs to be
07:24 matey; the real point is federation itself.
07:24 matey; and you can see other people (like leah) arriving at this on their own, which suggests even more that its a viable idea.
07:25 matey; whats really great about the federation, imo, has two parts
07:25 matey; first: the movement gains a future
07:25 matey; the fsf doesnt seem to have one
07:25 matey; second: the movement does not have to sit under a failing, monolithic org. why repeat that mistake?
07:26 matey; of course one of the most important things is that this not turn into open source
07:26 matey; most of my more elaborate concerns are about avoiding that sort of course
07:26 matey; i consider open source to be bait-and-switch. i want real freedon.
07:26 matey; freeddom

07:30 matey; osboot is doing that kind of research

07:31 matey; osboot is a different approach
07:31 leah; have you ever considered the true role gnu has had in free software?
07:31 matey; if libreboot is sufficient, we probably dont need osboot. if libreboot is failing, the floor needs to be open to ideas
07:32 leah; when you actually look at history, you'll find that there is another community which also gained traction in the 80s and 90s, on a completely different origin, but with the same goal
07:32 matey; have you ever considered the true role gnu has had in free software? <- i consider it the original flagship of the movement-- but one that has failed
07:32 matey; when you actually look at history <- im very interested in that history
07:32 matey; but what are you referring to exactly
07:32 leah; BSD predates GNU
07:32 activelow; GPL2 (3?) copyleft is too weak
07:33 matey; activelow just became a contract lawyer tonight
07:33 leah; and BSD's origin is literally unix itself
07:33 matey; yes
07:33 matey; bsd predates gnu
07:33 leah; before linux started, gnu was on the fringes
07:33 matey; however there were two people who more than any other, pushed for bsd to become free (theres one other factor i should mention and will)
07:34 matey; those people were richard stallman and john gilmore
07:34 activelow; gpl copyleft wasn't too weak (both legally and technically) in the beginning, to attract various developers; nowadays it is insufficient
07:34 leah; and it's only a historical accident that the distros used gnu
07:34 matey; there was one other factor in bsd becoming free
07:34 matey; and that account is told be kirk mccusick
07:34 leah; i think if gnu and linux never started, bsd would have been the thing everyone uses. and i think libre software would be in about the same position its in now
07:34 *techrights-ipfs-bot has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s)
07:35 matey; a lot of companies wanted bsd to be under a license that allowed them to put it on chips on expansion boards

07:35 matey; so these three factors led to a free/open version of bsd
07:35 matey; not i almost never say free/open but here i might as well
07:35 matey; 1. companies wanted it 2. stallman pushed for it 3. john gilmore pushed for it
07:36 matey; the most free version of bsd by far (in policy and reality) is openbsd, unless you count hyperbola (openbsd-based)
07:36 leah; what about netbsd and freebsd?
07:37 matey; freebsd imo is the least free of these, in ways i can detail
07:37 leah; go on then
07:37 matey; netbsd is in the middle but includes non-free drivers
07:37 activelow; bsd hasn't got any copyleft clause, stating the obvious; and even with gpl widespread corporations molest devs and users
07:37 matey; openbsd comes from netbsd but has a much stricter policy about drivers
07:37 matey; hyperbola extends that policy to firmware (openbsd has no interest in doing that)
07:38 matey; openbsd isnt a movement, its a project. they dont want to do firmware.
07:38 matey; their policy reflects this
07:38 matey; but they dont tolerate non-free drivers
07:38 matey; freebsd has its package management tied into github. policy documents too.

12:02 DaemonFC; European luxury cars give you a more luxurious interior to sit on while the engine boils itself to death on the side of the road.
12:04 DaemonFC; "According to RepairPal, the average annual maintenance and repair cost for a Buick is $608, which is noticeably lower than the $652 across all models and much lower than the costs for a BMW ($968), Mercedes-Benz ($908), and many other makes of luxury cars."
12:04 DaemonFC; That's just an average though. When the BMW's cooling system fails, people tend to get rid of the car seeing as how the engine's ruined too the first time it overheats because of plastic and aluminum crap inside.

12:07 DaemonFC; In many cases, between 1999 and 2009, the parts are exactly the same between various GM models, including Cadillac, Chevy, Buick, and Pontiac (defunct).
12:07 DaemonFC; Even though Pontiac has been gone for years now, you can get parts.

12:26 schestowitz-TR; [12:23] <leah> both of these countries have some of the best potential for wind energy
12:27 schestowitz-TR; we'd need to abandon cars except food transport etc.
12:27 schestowitz-TR; wing generates energy, but some things use it up too fast
12:27 schestowitz-TR; *wind
12:28 schestowitz-TR; and don't get me started ib "Electric" planes
12:28 schestowitz-TR; or space missions
12:28 schestowitz-TR; spaceX... powered by batteries :-)
12:29 schestowitz-TR; things people concerned for the planet can do:
12:29 schestowitz-TR; 1) very rarely fly
12:29 schestowitz-TR; 2) never buy a car
12:29 schestowitz-TR; 3) don't have kids
12:30 schestowitz-TR; 4) recycle, reuse, repurpose etc.
12:30 schestowitz-TR; use clothing instead of heating to the extent feasible (some age groups and parts of the world cannot)
12:30 schestowitz-TR; things that won't save us:
12:30 schestowitz-TR; 1) tech utopia
12:31 schestowitz-TR; 2) buying "newer" and "greener" things (more manufacturing)
12:31 schestowitz-TR; (1) and (2) are pseudo-solutions touted by capitalists
12:32 schestowitz-TR; turning the climate and overpopulation disaster into yet more profits (or "capitalist activity")
12:32 schestowitz-TR; double glazing or better insulation can knock off billions of energy bills, over decades
12:33 schestowitz-TR; DaemonFC took is (IMO) too far
12:33 schestowitz-TR; he started sleeping in a bag, zipped up
12:33 schestowitz-TR; there are way to reuse energy
12:34 schestowitz-TR; like putting computers in the same room, then shutting the doors
12:34 schestowitz-TR; a lot of excess energy becomes heat, also body heat
12:34 schestowitz-TR; several people in the same room means energy sharing
12:34 schestowitz-TR; it all sounds radical
12:34 schestowitz-TR; and media won't advocate such things, it's too busy "selling"

12:38 leah; schestowitz-TR: i saw a post from someone once, about sustainable server hosting
12:39 leah; basically the dude was running a raspberry pi off of a solar panel
12:39 leah; tiny panel
12:39 schestowitz-TR; leah: valve
12:39 schestowitz-TR; for outdoor pipes
12:39 leah; ok
12:39 schestowitz-TR; otherwise it bursts a lot
12:40 leah; according to the gas man who came recently to check my boiler, the government is ordering the construction of hydrogen infrastructure
12:40 schestowitz-TR; keeping water in the pipes warm is not good use of energy
12:40 leah; we will have hydrogen in our homes in like
12:40 leah; 10 years?
12:40 leah; hydrogen boilers
12:40 leah; > hydrogen
12:40 schestowitz-TR; bam
12:40 leah; so their thinking is:
12:40 leah; rebuild the pipes really thick, and make damn sure they're well-welded
12:41 leah; and make sure the boilers are reliable... yeah, right lol
12:41 schestowitz-TR; broken windows theory
12:41 leah; i'll make sure to have thermal solar panels long before i let someone put hydrogen in my house
12:41 schestowitz-TR; we used from electric showers to ga
12:41 schestowitz-TR; gas
12:41 leah; that shit is even less safe than regular gas
12:41 schestowitz-TR; and now the price of gas goes through the roof
12:42 leah; yeha i was gonna ask, how do you shower if you havent turned the heating on in years
12:42 leah; was gonna ask if you go cold
12:42 leah; cold showers are ok once you get used to them
12:42 schestowitz-TR; not in winter
12:42 schestowitz-TR; but water heating is another matter
12:42 schestowitz-TR; even washing machines need that sometimes
12:42 schestowitz-TR; not alway
12:43 schestowitz-TR; some can heat that up or do cold washes
12:43 leah; i've never understood though why you need gas to heat a home
12:43 leah; why can't boilers just be electric?
12:43 schestowitz-TR; but with 20 litres you can get a long shower
12:43 leah; heating element and just heat water
12:43 schestowitz-TR; the temperature differential in summer is small
12:43 schestowitz-TR; like 26->35
12:43 leah; like, why do you need gas
12:44 leah; electric heaters are more efficient

12:45 schestowitz-TR; and then maintain just that one thing
12:51 leah; schestowitz-TR: anyway
12:51 leah; local jobs
12:51 leah; local jobs means people can walk

12:51 schestowitz-TR; tell that to "clown computing" boosters
12:52 schestowitz-TR; they don't have any notion of local
12:52 leah; ?
12:52 leah; well a job on the internet neither is nor isn't local
12:52 leah; unless i suppose if you host the servers in your own lab
12:52 schestowitz-TR; a lot of jobs can be done from home or walking distance
12:52 schestowitz-TR; self-hosting is feasible
12:52 schestowitz-TR; but the www is far too bloated
12:52 leah; yeah well, i've identified that these things are the cause of global warming:
12:52 schestowitz-TR; maybe by design
12:53 leah; * meat/dairy indistry. we need to eat like, 90% less of that
12:53 schestowitz-TR; and the intention of floating everything to datacentres
12:53 leah; * commuting to work by car
12:53 leah; * soybean farming
12:53 leah; (yes, vegans, looking at you. you're just as bad as meat eaters)
12:53 schestowitz-TR; soy needs ruining forests
12:53 schestowitz-TR; it causes its own problems
12:53 leah; plus like
12:53 leah; a few other things
12:54 leah; pets are bad too. we breed animals just to have as pets
12:54 schestowitz-TR; no
12:54 leah; a pet labradour is pretty bad for the planet
12:54 schestowitz-TR; companionship is important
12:54 schestowitz-TR; pets don't use up muhc energy

12:58 schestowitz-TR; many animals become extinct
12:58 leah; also soybeans

12:58 leah; to make farm land
12:59 IPFS; IPFS downstream 60 minutes average 29.58 k/sec., IPFS upstream 78.71 average k/sec., average swarm size 353.93
12:59 leah; i don't know how we would do paper sustainably

13:02 leah; but so far, it has only gotten rid of about 0.5% of humanity
13:02 schestowitz-TR; like MinceR might say, it's not strong enough

17:15 DaemonFC; The Toyota Corolla at 2:55 has a bad serpentine belt.
17:16 DaemonFC; The guy should get it replaced.
17:16 *techrights-ipfs-bot has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s)
17:17 DaemonFC; Any time that belt starts squaling, chirping, making any noise whatsoever, take it to a GOOD mechanic, have them inspect the entire drive shaft system for bad/misaligned pulleys and of course noise from any accessories it runs, to see if those need replaced, and even if nothing needs replaced, get yourself a new belt anyway.
17:17 DaemonFC; Because chances are there's something wrong with the belt even if the drive system is fine otherwise, and you don't want a belt to snap and leave you stranded somewhere.
17:19 DaemonFC; The Buick started chirping yesterday morning when it was wet out. It went away after I drove the car a few blocks. I was going to the shop anyway, had them inspect the drive shaft system and they didn't find anything wrong with those expensive accessories ar pulleys, so I said "Throw the 14 year old belt in the trash and we'll put a new belt on and see if it goes away.". This morning it was even muggier and more humid than yesterday. I started
17:19 DaemonFC; the car with the new belt. No noise at all.
17:19 DaemonFC; It was belt glazing on the old belt.
17:20 DaemonFC; THe rubber had started to break down with heat and age (more age than anything, because they're never supposed to be on there more than 10 year even if you don't have 100,000 miles on the belt yet).
17:21 DaemonFC; And when it gets wet, that section of the belt starts getting pulled over some of the pulleys and chirping at you, and if you don't take care of it, your car can even start doing odd things before it goes ahead and snaps.
17:22 DaemonFC; Because it's suppose to grip the drive shaft and accessories tightly and turn all of them, and when part of the belt is slipping, it's not running those accessories properly until a good section of the belt gets back over them and starts turning them again.
17:23 DaemonFC; The S-Belt is actually a huge improvement on modern cars and the latest one to use several belts in there was Toyota, I think.
17:23 DaemonFC; They're known for reliable cars, but there's like 5 belts in there, so when it's belt day, you have some expensive jobs to do.
17:25 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, So I need to get new TPMS sensors in the Buick.
17:26 DaemonFC; It was dinging at me when they sold it and it says "SERVICE TPMS SYSTEM" but it's not a huge deal, other than the annoyance and I can't just tell the computer "I don't want to spend any money on that. Shut up.".
17:26 DaemonFC; But I think I still got a good deal on the car.
17:27 DaemonFC; Carvana is so ridiculous on pricing that even though the cars seem to be okay as a general rule, and they probably fix it up well enough that it's not dinging at you right away, there's still no guarantees that it's had all of its recommended servicing.
17:31 *ziraffep has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s)
17:32 DaemonFC; If they want you to pay $11,000 for a car similar to the one I got for $7,950, you're going to be really hot under the collar if they drop something off that's got a few issues and you're right back into the shop getting those nailed down.
17:34 DaemonFC; Right off the bat, I needed a new remote control, a second key, a bunch of service work, a battery. I mean so that's another $1,700 worth of stuff, right? But Carvana drops off a mystery car that costa $11,000 and you might still need to do some of this stuff anyway.
17:36 DaemonFC; I'd much rather just buy a car with some quirks for $3,050 less, skip the extra $500 in taxes for having bought it from a dealer that my state would have charged me, and go through some things with a mechanic where it won't cost me half that difference and I get credit card points and coupons along the way.
17:37 DaemonFC; <schestowitz-TR> like "truth social"
17:37 DaemonFC; That flopped big time.
17:38 DaemonFC; The problem conservatives at having with their social media is that aside from the Cancel Mob coming after them and forcing them to use their own infrastructure, like software and hosting, there's too many conservative social media sites and it waters down the experience.
17:38 DaemonFC; If Gab, TRUTH, and Parler were all like, one thing, and everyone went there, it would do pretty well by user count.
17:40 DaemonFC; Back to used cars, the used car market is nuts right now, and you can end up paying as much as I did, or more, for a total piece of crap.
17:40 DaemonFC; When I was shoppping around I noticed something.
17:40 DaemonFC; $6,000 tends to get you a total rustbucket now, especially at a dealership.
17:41 DaemonFC; That's $6,000. When I was a young man you could buy a late model car in decent shape anywhere you wanted to and it was like $2,000 if that.
17:41 DaemonFC; And for $2,000 you expected no rust, low miles, nothing huge wrong with it.
17:41 DaemonFC; Because when the other guy bought his new car, he got something totally decent for $20,000.
17:42 DaemonFC; So if a nice new car is $20,000, you get to sell your used one for $2,000, but when the government starts fucking with the car market and a new car is $60,000-$70,000 out the door, a decent used one won't start at less than $7,000 or so.
17:43 DaemonFC; The government crushed a lot of cars like mine in Cash 4 Clunkers in 2009. They ruined a bunch of really good late model American cars and people bought this battery shit from Asia and it's all broken down by now, and the American cars that survived the program can still run fine if they haven't been abused.
17:44 DaemonFC; And the program only brought up the average MPG for the US fleet by 1.2 MPG.
17:44 DaemonFC; And they destroyed millions of cars that had already been built and all the energy and GHG emissions that had been used to build them were now wasted so they could build another car.
17:44 bnchs; they locked the #fsf channel

21:25 matey; (just saying)
21:26 matey; to be fair, rms said rougly the opposite yesterday. but the damage has already been done.
21:26 matey; he said give us ideas so we can put them on the help page
21:26 matey; its a bit late for that, the culture has ossified (osi-fied?)
21:26 psydroid2; it seems to be a social circle, not a technical circle anymore
21:27 matey; its a mildly (unintentionally) elitist social circle
21:27 matey; and theres nothing wrong with being technical. you and leah are BOTH more technical than i am
21:27 matey; but neither are elitist.
21:28 matey; its not just about you, you, you. and the people in #fsf dont mean it to be. but they just dont get it.
21:28 matey; they dont mean it to be a tight little club. they literally cant help it. they would probably love to, if they had any idea how.
21:28 matey; why cant they figure it out? they cant seem to reverse engineer a driver for their ears.
21:28 matey; pity
21:29 matey; even rms has demonstrated this problem (dramatically so) with regards to hardware
21:29 matey; that alone is a huge problem, for reasons you and leah both can explain
21:29 matey; but also an example of a larger (hearing) problem that rms passes down to his acolytes
21:30 matey; and this was sustainable for a few decades, and has now collapsed
21:30 matey; leaving any and all who truly care about such a legacy going forward to pick up and do with it what they will

21:32 matey; not THAT sage, of course
21:32 matey; she said bummer, but if its worth doing it will go on (with people doing as they see fit)
21:33 matey; rms (like others) made one concession to "open source" in his talk yesterday
21:34 matey; open source razed the temple and looted its contents, and murdered the high priest
21:34 matey; rms is truly beaten
21:35 matey; i listened to the talk three times yesterday. i told the chief gnewsance it was meant as a state of the union, but read more like articles of surrender
21:36 matey; i know it wasnt intended that way. which makes it all that much sadder
21:37 psydroid2; everything has a beginning and an end
21:37 psydroid2; and then a new cycle starts
21:37 matey; <psydroid2> and then a new cycle starts <- you took my response, but its alright
21:39 matey; i will be one of the people who always sees rms as the founder of all this
21:39 matey; however, even with that
21:39 matey; ill give credit to those who pushed just as notably early on
21:39 matey; like gilmore
21:40 matey; lessig stole stallmans ideas, proudly, and was never shy to admit it
21:40 matey; i adore him
21:40 matey; lessig is the shit
21:40 matey; pity cc is even farther from its founder than the fsf is from its own
21:41 matey; stallman stole his ideas too. though im not sure he did so deliberately, it certainly wasnt from open source, and i doubt he realises how far from original his idea really was
21:42 matey; kingoffrance would probably argue that no idea is original, and i would agree
21:42 matey; only sins are original, and even then very very few of them :)
21:43 matey; (im mostly thinking of the vatican rag, one of of the funniest and silliest songs ive ever heard)
21:45 matey; i dont like torvalds. i really dislike him. hes a schmuck.
21:46 matey; however, i still think hes better than gkh and i think if he hadnt been cancelled he would have chosen a better successor (and that was the point)
21:46 matey; rms too has lost the opportunity to find a successor. he will support whoever they put in front of them, having little real choice or power.
21:47 matey; and he will hope for the best. as if thats all any of us can do. and we will be asked to join him in that.
21:47 matey; but just as lessig says the point of elections is to choose from a very small pool of people already selected by primaries controlled by money
21:48 matey; the fsf will move into place people not worth our time as stallmans successor
21:48 matey; and it will be painfully obvious, but we will still be expected to give our support.
21:48 matey; at that point it will be good to remember that the fsf has no real authority
21:49 matey; it had cultural relevance, and it will still have historical relevance, and (imo) it betrayed us all several times
21:49 matey; mostly by capitulating to its own enemies-- and then asking us to join it in doing so
21:49 matey; but, fuck that.
21:50 matey; it wouldnt be anything remotely like the first progressive institution to make such a fatal mistake, and become irrelevant as a result
21:50 matey; nor does progress end with the end of such institutions
21:50 matey; nor do fake things like open source preclude the possibility of non-cynical alternatives
21:51 psydroid2; you have to be willing to make yourself obsolete
21:51 matey; just because open source is fake doesnt mean every alternative will be
21:51 psydroid2; as an individual or as an organisation
21:51 matey; imagine if the wright brothers had tried to control the apollo mission
21:52 matey; "no no, no, you need balsa flaps to make sure the rocket can steer towards its course!"
21:52 matey; well i mean, with that level of thrust balsa flaps are probably fucking useless (though im not a rocket scientist)
21:52 matey; (neither are the wright brothers)
21:53 matey; imagine if einstein had told hawking to go fuck himself, or if we had left relativity up to newton
21:53 matey; these are all very important people we owe swaths of scientific progress to
21:53 matey; none are small or unimportant
21:54 matey; but free software in its present state cant sustain (or even defend) itself
21:54 matey; it has failed
21:54 matey; and it must go on somehow
21:54 matey; trying to stand up to the war on general computing, with the tools the fsf has available
21:55 matey; is like trying to figure out quantum mechanics with newtons laws of motion
21:55 matey; we must have new strategies-- they wont be entirely unlike the old strategies
21:56 matey; but just like you cant put an ancient copy of apache up and then secure it with old versions of security tools
21:56 matey; we need bigger upgrades than the fsf can organise
21:56 matey; or is willing to organise
21:57 matey; and im not arguing for bloat-- im saying that the fsf is a bloated poorly maintained mess
21:57 matey; dont fix whats not broken
21:57 matey; but fix whatever has failed
22:04 psydroid2; scientific development always goes on after branching out in several directions
22:04 matey; it has to explore new possibilities
22:05 matey; many of which will prove to be dead ends-- but without exploring, youre already at a dead end
22:07 matey; the fsfs approach was nearly confucianist in its nature
22:07 matey; we have thousands of years of experience with the limitations of such an approach
22:08 matey; but we actually hit the limit a few years ago
22:09 matey; im not saying it couldnt have gone on longer, it was certainly attacked
22:09 matey; but it didnt stand up to it, as much as they put a brave face on everything-- no one is fooled
22:09 matey; theyre standing on their own ruins
22:10 matey; they refuse to learn from the experience, except to capitulate further, which they were already doing when the attacks started
22:11 matey; we learn. we apply. they insist. we ignore.
22:11 matey; we have already parted ways with them.
22:13 matey; newtons inertia still applies. it drags the divorce out.
22:14 matey; we divide up all our things-- thousands of them. the difference from a traditional divorce being that copies are as good as the originals, but we still have to decide what to take with us.
22:15 matey; it will be a vaugely similar process if mankind ever makes it out of the solar system
22:16 matey; this planet wont sustain us forever even if we learn to stop destroying it
22:16 matey; but if we make it that far, we will leave the solar nest
22:17 matey; and the sun will explode
22:17 matey; and they wont elect a new one

22:30 MinceR; :>
22:34 matey; the points on the corners of the font are too much
22:34 matey; im never going to look at the metallica logo the same way ever again

22:35 matey; "oh"
22:35 matey; "wait, what?"
22:37 matey; "On 22 August 2021, Gloryhammer announced that Thomas Winkler had exited the band.[18] Winkler addressed the situation, stating he was fired via an email that cited the band's reasons for his departure as disagreements on business and organizational matters."
22:38 matey; it wasnt that. they just thought his name wasnt metal enough
22:38 matey; "oh cmon, what about the fonz? aaaaaaaaaaayy"

23:05 *psydruid saw Megadeth live in concert but not Metallica
23:05 matey; you made the right choice
23:05 matey; i wont lie, i was never really a megadeth fan
23:06 matey; but if i could go back and give a shit about them instead, that would be alright
23:06 matey; im not ashamed that i liked metallica. i dont think they actually sucked back then
23:06 matey; by the time i was in high school though, i could only laugh and shake my head
23:08 matey; the first two cds i bought were weird al and metallicas selftitled (deny) album
23:08 psydruid; I don't have any of Megadeth's albums and I do have the older Metallica albums, but I don't really know what they're about anymore these days
23:08 matey; i honestly think rock sort of died in the past 15 years or so
23:09 matey; the last time i heard a rock band that actually sounded like a rock band, it was anvil (dave grohl was saying how great they were. he was also really smashed)
23:10 matey; gloryhammer is more recent, they sound fun at least but when i was listening i was like "shit, i hope theyre not white supremacists"
23:10 matey; probably not, if mincer was referencing them
23:10 matey; but like thats where we are with rock music sort of...
23:10 matey; to be fair i REALLY havent been paying attention, im happy if im wrong
23:10 matey; still if i hear anything metal i have no idea what im listening to
23:11 matey; i still look like a MIGHT play a bass though
23:11 matey; or sell organic smoothies, one of the two.
23:14 psydruid; I sort of grew up with rock and metal, but as you said it doesn't seem to really be in vogue anymore
23:14 matey; and i dont care whats in, i still like some of the stuff i liked as a little kid
23:14 matey; beatles, lennon, phil collins, huey lewis
23:15 matey; and i like a lot of electronica
23:15 matey; with rock i think its either sincere or its bullshit
23:15 matey; and i think most rock is... i dont know what the fuck it is
23:16 matey; it went through a really bad patch for a while and i havent picked it back up
23:16 psydruid; I listen to all kinds of things these days, as long as I believe it's good music
23:16 matey; i blame california.
23:16 matey; yeah good music is good music
23:16 matey; i fucking hate country, its my least favourite genre 10 times over
23:16 matey; even there there are exceptions
23:16 matey; i like klezmer, i wasnt expecting that
23:17 matey; but i had a friend who played accordion for a klezmer band
23:17 matey; what can i tell you
23:17 psydruid; I got some klezmer music from Poland when I was living there
23:18 psydruid; I haven't listened to a lot of it, though

23:21 XRevan86; It's the part of my music tastes where people say "the heck is this?"
23:21 psydruid; always heard that name but never really listened to them
23:22 matey; i grew up on british music and "oldies" but not in the uk
23:22 matey; the first solo artist i liked was phil collins
23:22 XRevan86; Italian music here.
23:23 matey; my favourite song this week is some random accordion song played on a bus by some middle aged man in belarus
23:23 matey; if its not that good i wouldnt be able to tell you, im no expert
23:23 psydruid; Indian music here and rock, metal and electronica mostly from the 90s
23:24 psydruid; so I don't really know much from the 70s and before
23:24 matey; i still love counting crows-- though when i teased dfc about finding it in his buicks cd player i was teasing
23:24 matey; 90s music had fucking depth
23:25 matey; even the pop music (sometimes)
23:25 psydruid; that's a good band, I have some of their albums
23:25 matey; there was a lot of shit too. i still like aqua :)
23:25 psydruid; from the 90s, yes
23:25 psydruid; oh :)
23:25 matey; i have no pride-- i was a debbie gibson fan.
23:26 matey; she cant be all bad, she loves billy joel.
23:27 matey; of course no one says anything after that
23:28 matey; "the swastika tattoo was one thing, but debbie gibson?" (i made up the tattoo part)
23:29 matey; theres a true story, from trent reznor, that sometimes to get pumped up before going on stage he would listen to cece peniston
23:29 matey; i remember her. its fucking hilarious.
