2022-08-03: Random Reviews - Gekkeikan Sake

In brief: Really light taste, especially while warm. Easy to drink.

ABV: 15.6%

Price: Cheap, $8 a bottle. (Depending on size, $8 for 750ml)

After having tried Ozeki's cloudy sake[1] I wanted to give the properly filtered stuff a try.

I bought a fairly small 750ml bottle of Gekkeikan, and poured myself a glass.

I decided to try and warm it with water like they suggested, so I rigged up a small bowl to put the cup in and set it under the sink so hot water was always going into the bowl (and not the cup).

Taking the first sip, I was honestly taken back with how little it tasted like anything.

The cup wasn't completely filled with warm sake, there were a few lukewarm parts, so I really could taste a difference in taste when having truly warm stuff and not warm stuff.

Overall it tasted really good warm, like I could drink it without even noticing it was really alcohol.

I then gave up with the tedium of warming up the sake and started drinking it at room temperature.

It definitely has a distinct taste/smell, the smell specifically reminds me almost of mushrooms for some reason.

Regardless of whether it's warm or room temperature (will have to try cold too like the cloudy stuff) this stuff is so easy to drink I don't make a face or do that classic alcohol exhale haha.

Highly recommend.
