Midnight Pub

Happy National Video Game Day

Happy National Video Game Day!

Earlier today, I caught wind that apparently today is national video game day here in the US. It prompted me to go ahead and work on some remixes of video game music to go ahead and commemorate the day.

That music is now uploaded here on gemini, the melodies can be found @ my stand just outside the pub! While spending my time busking outside the bar, having a puff of the pipe, taking breaks for banter and respite in between songs and loading projects, thinking about the day has got me wondering:

I hear an awful lot of talk about music in the pub from just out the entrance, and I'm here making merry as I sing my tunes, but I'd rather hear about your guys' interest in any video game music that's caught your fancy in the past! I know video game soundtracks are a big influence on me and the kind of sounds I do, especially the 32-bit and 16-bit sounds of the Playstation, SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast n such.

Any video game soundtracks that are your favorites or stand out to you?

Mine would have to include games like Art of Fighting, Earthbound, Einhander, LSD Dream Emulator, Streets of Rage 3, or a big favorite as a child was the Wipeout racing games, Snatcher also has pheonominal music, and so on and so forth.

What's some video game music you've heard lately that's grabbed you?

I'd love to read your guys' comments on this slow friday evening. You all have such entertaining posts. Thank you anybody for taking the time to read, have a good one!

I love the guitar melody for the menu screen in Dwarf Fortress, and I've also recently give the soundtrack to Disco Elysium another listen.

The former invokes a sense of tragedy and industry, whereas the later gives a wistfulness for a wooden shack on a unforgiving shore.

My absolute favorite game of all time is Outer Wilds, and it's in no small part due to the soundtrack. I didn't think I'd ever consider a banjo the appropriate instrument for a game set in space, but its twangy intimacy really does underscore our place in the vast universe.

And then the DLC came out. Have you ever heard a theremin cry?

The rest of this comment is dedicated to encouraging anyone interested in a space archaeology game to play Outer Wilds. The only progression in the game is what you learn, and when you learn everything in the game you can beat it in under 20 minutes. For this reason, I can never re-experience it for the first time again, so I try to live vicariously and get other people to play it. Go in blind, don't do any research ahead of time.
