By Fairport Convention (1969)
If you go to a record fair in the UK, you'd be forgiven for thinking Fairport Convention was a *genre* rather than a band. Which is exactly the sort of mainstream recognition that would make past me decide not to bother with a band. Today's pick is past me being shown up once again.
Unhalfbricking is really good. Varied, noodly without ever outstaying it's welcome. There's always a rock edge in the production, be it the drums or the bass keeping things moving, no matter how folk-esque the song. There's Americana, Zydeco, British folk. From reading the Wikipedia summary, this album is one of three this year, and also a transition from more American-influenced folk-rock to English influenced folk-rock. This has piqued my interest, so I'm looking forward to listening to the surrounding albums and picking a direction
