By Merle Haggard (1967)
There's something really awkward about the cover for this one. The layout is great, but the uncomfortable look and pose of Merle hanging on a ladder is just... slightly awkward. Inside it's a decent collection of classic country songs. Lyrically it felt like a change from a lot of country, more abashed and less boastful, concilliatory rather than confrontational.
The only thing holding this back from a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ is that there are few stand out songs. There are no duffers either. It's solid.
