My partner walked in while I was listening to this and said "This doesn't really sound like *you* music. Is it your album of the day?" What they meant was: it's close to what you'd put on normally, but just slightly off. That's how I felt too.

The Icarus Line sound like a super group, or someone's second band. They don't do a single original or interesting thing, but they do it with unwarranted confidence and swagger. Songs say nothing and meander around a single element - aping Iggy Pop or a riff that must have sounded cool before it was a song.

After giving up half way through, then relenting and finishing the album, I learned I was wrong. The band lives and dies by it's attitude, and in 2004 that was enough to win it some good reviews. Perhaps the album is more a relic of an era - an incredible live band watered down for an album in an era where albums mattered.
