Al Green pops up frequently enough on DJ Time Traveller's weekly radio show that I'm familiar-ish, but this was the first album I've listened to. It's starts strong and keeps going. His voice is versatile. The instrumentation never veers too far in to sappiness, nor does it ever really take centre stage. From start to finish, it’s a pleasure to listen to.
If I have to make one complaint, which clearly I do because I am, it's an album from an era seems to mean 'collection of songs' more than a cohesive thingy. The strongest track is up front, everything is distinct and feels like it could be played on shuffle rather than having anything sort of sequencing. It's a niggle, but this is 1001 *Albums* You Must Hear Before You Die. Albums I really love have musical motifs or lyrical themes or track ordering that makes each song more than the sum of its parts. I didn't come in expecting a concept album, but, hey, niggles.
