16:40 TR Bot; Car Washes and Water Efficiency
16:40 DaemonFC; The local car wash brags that they don't filter and reuse any water.
16:40 DaemonFC; So my guess is that they're using more than 50 gallons per car.
16:41 DaemonFC; Gonad was frugal in some ways so he'd have more money for beer and cigarettes.
16:42 DaemonFC; One thing he did was his own car washes. He bought a pressure washing kit and washed his truck every Saturday including the underbody.
16:43 DaemonFC; He was a mechanic so even though his truck was a 1998 Dodge Ram, he could keep it going. He had friends in the semi business, so they let him use their repair bays and tools for free if it was going to be a major repair.
16:43 DaemonFC; The truck still worked fine and looked pretty good 20 years in. No rust or anything. Google Maps made a pass by his house like a month before he died and there's his truck sitting there, looking like the day he bought it.
16:44 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, That's one reason I like the Buick. I may not be qualified to do all my own repair work, but typically the labor hours are way less than the average car.
16:45 DaemonFC; Because the whole thing was basically a refinement of decades-old technologies from when they cared about whether it was going to be fiscally possible to do your upkeep.
16:45 DaemonFC; And so, as such, almost anything you need to get at is right there unless you need to yank the engine out for a rebuild or something.
16:46 DaemonFC; It's a level of technology that is easier to repair, so it will outlive even cars coming off the assembly line today.
16:47 DaemonFC; It's like countries with "modern militaries" that get unlimited funds (while the people eat out of trash cans to fund this) going "We have an entire fleet of nuclear subs!".
16:47 *u-amarsh04 has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
16:47 DaemonFC; Well, okay, but the Iranians have diesel subs, and they're actually still a threat.
16:48 DaemonFC; They're easier to fix. They know how to fix them, they'll be out there lurking around, and some day they might really embarrass a "modern" navy by blowing up something that was really expensive and sophisticated.
16:50 DaemonFC; How is it going to look on CNN if some modern ship from the US, or UK, is out there in the Persian Gulf and gets blown up by something from the 1960s that Russia sold off when it went bankrupt in the 90s?
16:50 *u-amarsh04 (~amarsh04@v6xmmrhxmbafc.irc) has joined #techrights
16:50 DaemonFC; So, you know, mjg59_ can take his "auto drive" software and cram it.
16:51 DaemonFC; Along with all of this battery car horseshit.
16:51 DaemonFC; And hybrid cars, and all this idiotic stuff that, frankly, it only exists to take control away from the user.
16:52 DaemonFC; It helps the company sell more product because when it starts malfunctioning, you can't take it down to Car-X and have them go "Oh, it's just a cheap sensor. Don't worry about it!" or "Oh, your brakes are squealing. We have ceramic pads for that that aren't astronomical.".
16:53 DaemonFC; I would say that 99 times out of 100 when the Check Engine Light comes on with your 3800 V6, it's nothing to sweat bullets over.
16:53 DaemonFC; It's probably just a $30 coil pack or a spark plug or a small vacuum leak that the shop can fix for $100.
16:53 DaemonFC; It's just a very very good engine.
16:54 DaemonFC; GM designed these things to be as simple as they could be to get the job done well.
16:55 DaemonFC; So I mean, you don't really even need to go to a mechanic when it says something like "Cylinder 1 misfire". If you have a screwdriver, do it one at a time, hook up the spark plug wire boots back in the correct order (there's 2 per coil), it's right there. You don't have to go digging into the engine.
16:55 DaemonFC; It's literally two screws.
16:56 DaemonFC; They even have it numbered which post on the coil goes to what cylinder! So if you replace the coils, you can just write the numbers on the replacement in sharpie marker or something.
16:56 DaemonFC; The coils are so cheap and so few that you may even just replace all of them to make sure the others don't give you any problems for a while.
16:58 DaemonFC; A lot of manufacturers do terrible things, like coil on plug, which is a nightmare because you have to get a wrench and start pulling them off the top of each spark plug, and if you have a I4, V6, or V8, you'll have 4, 6, or 8 coils, instead of 2, 3, or 4.
16:58 DaemonFC; So pop the hood and if they're doing little things to make owning the car an absolute nightmare, figure that they do other things too.
16:59 IPFS; IPFS downstream 60 minutes average 20.68 k/sec., IPFS upstream 63.25 average k/sec., average swarm size 397.18
16:59 DaemonFC; The Germans are making cars where you can't pull a dipstick and check your transmission fluid and oil.
16:59 DaemonFC; You have to throw cardboard under the car overnight and get under there with a flashlight and look all around to see if it looks like anything has been leaking.
17:01 DaemonFC; If you're losing transmission fluid, there are other places besides the pan where it can be leaking from, and sometimes it won't leave puddles because it'll only do it under pressure while the car is on and so it'll throw some while you're driving. Then it's a BMW so you can't just check your fluid.
17:02 DaemonFC; If something is not known for being easy to maintain, you shouldn't even try to own it, because it'll age and you will lose.
17:03 DaemonFC; They're talking on financial websites, right, how you should "budget" for car repairs to eat up 10% of your household budget. 10%! On repairs, not car payments, car insurance....just repairs.
17:03 DaemonFC; So like, if you're pulling down $4,000 a month, they're saying $400 a month in car repair bills is "reasonable".
17:04 DaemonFC; The 2003 Impala with 300,000 miles on it didn't cost me 10% of our household budget to maintain, even as it was always doing something. It cost me maybe 2.5-3%.
17:04 DaemonFC; So people give GM a lot of abuse over the 90s and 2000s stuff, but the truth is it really pales in comparison to what you can buy now even when it gets really old and you have it in the shop.
17:06 DaemonFC; They want people sandbagged with car payments all the time, and the car payments will be $800-900 a month on something new and decent, then you own it and I use "own" generously, because there will be $3,000 in subscriptions over 10 years to use heated seats and remote start that the car has built-in.
17:07 DaemonFC; And we absolutely will not be talking about any of these cars mjg59_ is developing software for being sold 14 years later to a guy that goes "Ehh, give it some adjustments and new fluids and deal with a small rust issue and I'll drive it for ten more years or more!" when the car is already 14.

23:01 schestowitz-TR; XRevan86: you still need to study the source code, e.g. 30,000,000 lines of code in Chrome
23:01 schestowitz-TR; the issue of trust is misframed somewhat
23:01 schestowitz-TR; and should be traced back to who does what
23:01 bnchs__; and the proprietary blobs
23:01 XRevan86; schestowitz: Out of the scope.
23:01 bnchs__; like google widevine
23:01 schestowitz-TR; Red Hat puts patches literally from the NSA inside Linux, the kernel
23:01 schestowitz-TR; they told me this
23:02 XRevan86; Reproducible Builds is about the same source code giving identical binaries as a result of a build recipe.
23:03 schestowitz-TR; haha, here is a funny scenario
23:03 schestowitz-TR; gulag using reproducible builds, in house...
23:03 schestowitz-TR; to check back or bug doors stay intact
23:03 schestowitz-TR; and nobody inside gulag or outside silently removed them
23:04 XRevan86; With a hex editor?
23:04 schestowitz-TR; Reproducible Builds FTW: making sure the building of bug doors is "success!"
23:04 schestowitz-TR; Gulag: let's find that along with Ford Foundation
23:04 schestowitz-TR; *fund
23:04 activelow; just compiled sdl-terminal library, without opengl dependency... let's see how it goes, with suckless terminal ;)
23:05 XRevan86; schestowitz: That makes no sense.
23:05 schestowitz-TR; activelow: how much ram does suckless terminal suck?
23:05 schestowitz-TR; XRevan86: some back doors are hex
23:05 activelow; schestowitz-TR: don't know
23:06 schestowitz-TR; we covered this in techrights around 2008
23:06 schestowitz-TR; they don't serve code
23:06 schestowitz-TR; just some opaque shite to stick into the program
23:06 schestowitz-TR; it's a longstanding problem
23:06 bnchs__; schestowitz-TR, does it check for proprietary blobs
23:06 schestowitz-TR; one line of code can give you a back door
23:06 schestowitz-TR; and be hard to detect
23:06 bnchs__; "identical binaries" is vague
23:06 schestowitz-TR; you just put it in the "right" place
23:07 bnchs__; it also means the builds are identical with same blobs
23:07 XRevan86; bnchs__: It's not vague.

23:07 XRevan86; bnchs__: It means sha512sum will be identical.
23:07 bnchs__; is there a loophole in it?
23:07 schestowitz-TR; entropy-lretaed units are favourites
23:07 mjg59_; Reproducible builds are intended to allow you to reduce the amount of trust you have to place in your (or anyone else's) build system
23:07 bnchs__; like inserting blobs into it?
23:07 schestowitz-TR; getting the maths 'wrong'
23:07 XRevan86; bnchs__: If inserting blobs is part of the build process and is done in the exact same way every time, it will be reproducible.
23:08 mjg59_; Obviously this doesn't solve the case of the source code not being trustworthy
23:08 bnchs__; yes
23:08 schestowitz-TR; XRevan86: so the back doors, if any, can stay
23:08 bnchs__; so you also have to check if the source code has any blobs
23:08 schestowitz-TR; and you did not deal with the worst culprit
23:08 XRevan86; It's a solution to a very specific problem.
23:08 schestowitz-TR; right
23:08 schestowitz-TR; and gulag is fine with it
23:08 XRevan86; Criticism that it's not panaceia against every possible threat is not constructive.
23:09 schestowitz-TR; it's "good enough" for untrustworthy company
23:09 schestowitz-TR; XRevan86: it delas with the lesser issue
23:09 schestowitz-TR; build systems
23:09 schestowitz-TR; but not the actual behaviour of the code
23:09 SomeH4x0r; bnchs__: I'm back for now
23:09 XRevan86; Obviously they have interest, which is surprising considering how incredibly over-complicated Google's build systems are.
23:09 schestowitz-TR; or rather the distribution of it
23:10 schestowitz-TR; you could also tar the whole thing at host level
23:10 schestowitz-TR; tar with same version on guest
23:10 schestowitz-TR; and then do checksum
23:10 XRevan86; Would feel to be nearly impossible to make that shite reproducible. But what do I know?
23:10 schestowitz-TR; that does not mean the code is safe
23:10 schestowitz-TR; it just means you have the same thing you downloaded (same as the source)
23:10 XRevan86; schestowitz: It deals with what it was meant to deal with.
23:11 schestowitz-TR; right
23:11 schestowitz-TR; and gulag is OK with it
23:11 XRevan86; Nothing more, nothing less.
23:11 schestowitz-TR; because it's still not dealing with things like chrome that have more than one 0-day per month this year
23:11 bnchs__; i just realized something
23:11 schestowitz-TR; critical, too
23:11 bnchs__; "The internal storage of the PlayStation 5 is a custom-built 825 GB solid-state drive (667 GB available)"
23:11 bnchs__; PS5's os consumes over a 100 GB
23:11 bnchs__; or whatever their base system is
23:11 XRevan86; schestowitz: That would be *completely* unrelated to Reproducible Builds.
23:12 schestowitz-TR; activelow (whom I don't agree with on many issues) is at least trying to tackle some issues
23:12 schestowitz-TR; related to too much complexicity
23:12 schestowitz-TR; suckless is possible to learn quickly
23:12 schestowitz-TR; and many people see it
23:12 activelow; I already solved _many_ issues
23:12 schestowitz-TR; linus is... a joke
23:12 schestowitz-TR; it's MAAAASIVE
23:13 schestowitz-TR; and usually for no real need
23:13 schestowitz-TR; shit like linux-azure
23:13 schestowitz-TR; I don't want crap like that
23:13 schestowitz-TR; nobody wants it
23:13 schestowitz-TR; azure is niche
23:13 schestowitz-TR; azure has layoffs
23:13 schestowitz-TR; they put fossil code inside the kernel
23:13 schestowitz-TR; to promote their NSAware
23:13 activelow; suckless.org isn't radical any, with their philosophy, remembering webkit-gtk for example, for their surf browser
23:14 schestowitz-TR; not just Microsoft BTW
23:14 activelow; such doesn't at all suck less
23:14 activelow; *not radical enough
23:14 schestowitz-TR; the www is radical
23:14 schestowitz-TR; the complexity is unbelievablke
23:14 schestowitz-TR; so you need to try not to use a web browser
23:14 schestowitz-TR; if possible
23:14 schestowitz-TR; like documentation pages
23:14 schestowitz-TR; gemini is good enough for these
23:15 activelow; although suckless terminal is neat (for those who can cope with it), the truly suckless approach would be linux framebuffer console, not X11 with a terminal emulator
23:15 schestowitz-TR; it can also do images and videos
23:15 schestowitz-TR; in a proper video player
23:15 schestowitz-TR; we've come to the point where systems that only need a TEXT EDITOR and nothing else have a kernel 5 million lines of code or more
23:15 schestowitz-TR; and that wastes energy, too
23:16 schestowitz-TR; try teaching computer science pupils how to program using Web browsers
23:16 schestowitz-TR; and not some framework/abstraction
23:16 schestowitz-TR; you cannot
23:16 activelow; current GNU/Linux systems do not at least provide man pages anymore, without a c++ compiler required (sys-apps/groff iirc)
23:17 schestowitz-TR; mediagoblin is also very big
23:17 schestowitz-TR; we manage video editing, uploading, management in maybe 200 lines of bash
23:17 activelow; i mean, "free software" or not, that's, don't want to insult or offend anyone, yet it's a fact
23:18 schestowitz-TR; much of it branches out to other, simpler, modular command-line programs
23:18 schestowitz-TR; not 5,000,000 lines of code like old Linux
23:19 schestowitz-TR; techrights-news and Techrights-IPFS bots are a few hundreds of lines of C code
23:19 schestowitz-TR; they don't do "azure" :-)
