10:44 activelow; i think, in practice, BSD license and GPL do not differ that much, as far as copyleft is concerned for example
10:46 activelow; because 1) it is the author(s) who decide about licensing terms, and authors may choose to re-license their _own_ sources whenever they wish; with GPL this requires more consent among _all_ involved authors, BSD is less restrictive with regards to the consent of an individual author

10:49 activelow; for example, if MS IBM Wintel chose to "incorporate" any GPL software, and didn't fully comply with copyleft (and/or paid some authors), then there is nothing for anyone else which could be done to enforce copyleft

10:50 TR Bot; 5 underused Podman features to try now | Enable Sysadmin
10:53 activelow; 3) GPL does not contain clauses such as "incorporation into non-free software is prohibited by this license", or "source codes must be released to _everyone_"
10:56 activelow; 4) GPL does not sufficiently guard software freedom, if free software is not protected by standards and compliance with it which can prevent undesireable changes to free software
10:57 activelow; in fact, without any standards compliance involved, GPL itself is a utility to attack free software; GNOME, GTK1->2->3->4 is a prime example for this
10:58 mjg59_; activelow: "source codes must be released to _everyone_" - unless people distribute under 3(a), then yes, source code must be distributed to everyone
10:59 IPFS; IPFS downstream 60 minutes average 22.41 k/sec., IPFS upstream 27.95 average k/sec., average swarm size 477.75
11:04 activelow; mjg59_: if _all_ authors of any software, say version X, are copyright holder of 100% of this version x sources; then authors can re-license their _own_ software for sale whenever they wish, without any legal basis for anyone else to enforce copyleft against this
11:04 activelow; furthermore, if those authors implemented a version x+1 without copyleft, this too is legitimate

11:05 *CParadoxum__ has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s)
11:07 activelow; what is helpful with this scenario, again, too is standards compliance, if any such version x of a GPL software is standards compliant, any extension outside a stanard without GPL is less benefitial

11:23 mjg59_; But also, nobody wanted to develop against Motif because it was fucking awful
11:26 activelow; remarkable twist, "downstream distributors" _must_ comply with GPL copyleft; while authors (MS IBM Wintel) who consented about a version X re-licensed status may choose not to
11:27 mjg59_; Yeah people who write code can choose the license

15:05 activelow; although, i am more radical with the philosphy than them
15:05 activelow; such as, suckless.org incorporates surf browser, which is based on webkit-gtk, while i reject both webkit and gtk
15:07 activelow; how far i would follow suckless.org with their dwm/st components into X11 isn't clarified yet, simply because i do not know yet if raw linux terminal (without x11) can be extended to support sixel for example
15:09 activelow; i am not sure yet, if a final release will contain x11/gtk1 etc.; depends on minor issues remaining
15:10 activelow; such as, currently, mplayer/sdl/fbcon on linux console doesn't permit vt-switching, copy-paste between links browser (graphical) and terminal is cumbersome
15:11 activelow; and i do want/need a utility to navigate various www sites
15:12 activelow; reminds me of the broken state of gtk2/3 without x11 and directfb backend, maybe i have better luck with GTK1 on raw linux framebuffer console
15:13 activelow; the alternative to X11 isn't wayland anyway, the alternative to X11 is none at all

15:39 activelow; one heavy hitter is the cairo rendering with gtk2-7 introduced, which is the one pulling harfbuzz/c++ since then

20:37 DaemonFC; The new cars are so expensive and then they have all of that Hey Hi crap and cheapass paint that won't last 3 years and plastic interior and plastic engine parts.
20:40 DaemonFC; Usually by the time I'm replacing wheel bearings it's because the ABS system is kicking my brake pedal all around because the GM cars are very particular about how far off the deviation from the spec the wheel bearing can be from the sensor inside.
20:40 DaemonFC; That is actually a good thing. It lets you know when a hub is on the way out because you'll take your car in and complain about the brake pedal jumping up and down like a rabbit in mating season.
20:40 DaemonFC; By the time the hub fails catastrophically, it can cause a really nasty car accident.
20:41 DaemonFC; So the right time to replace it is.....as soon as it starts behaving oddly, at all.
20:41 DaemonFC; Weird noises, pulsing the ABS system, ABS/traction weirdness going on, ABS/traction lights, grinding, sparking(!), growling.
20:42 DaemonFC; Anything going strange in the brake systems in my cars gets fixed immediately.

20:47 DaemonFC; I switched my cars that used green over to yellow precisely because it's less toxic and you can change over as long as you thoroughly flush out the green first.
20:47 DaemonFC; But the Buick will stay with orange.
20:47 MinceR; "It's like they say. Asbestos, it'll kill you."
20:48 DaemonFC; DexCool Orange got a bad rap pretty much just because people are idiots.
20:48 DaemonFC; "I didn't change out my coolant for 15 years and then it sludged! Damn you GM!"
20:48 DaemonFC; Or "I ignored leaks and kept topping it off and eventually there was sludge due to oxygenation! Damn you GM!".
20:49 DaemonFC; Every time you get a coolant change you need to have them pressure test the system and fix any leaks that they find.
20:49 DaemonFC; Any air getting in will rapidly degrade the orange coolant.
20:52 TR News; I'm happy today. Twitter will die soon. Very soon. It'll exist for no purpose other than one person's ego and promotion of frauds. Suffice to say, few will participate in this. Many will opt out. [Assuming reports are accurate]

21:16 DaemonFC; I briefly considered moving the cars over to Lemonade, except that there's two problems with that.
21:16 DaemonFC; 1. They wanted a third more than Geico for the Buick and 2. They said the Impala was a total loss when I got the hail damage money a few years ago and used it to rebuild the engine, so there was no way they'd cover it even with just liability insurance.

22:27 DaemonFC; Failure means replacing the whole part, but you don't have to rely on some guy who is servicing your car remembering to grease all of the fittings every time you're in for an oil change.
22:28 DaemonFC; Maintaining a car used to be a lot more work because the owner's manual would say like, grease all fittings every 3,000 miles, and then people would take their car to fucking Walmart.

22:28 DaemonFC; Well, I did, but everyone else just let the fittings go dry and then their car breaks down.
22:29 DaemonFC; Even the 2003 Impala came with tie rod ends and stuff you needed to grease.

23:08 DaemonFC; GM used to do an amazing warranty. Just amazing.
23:09 DaemonFC; And because the warranty went on so long (better than anything in the market back then) they kind of didn't want to get the car back in over and over at their expense to repair it at the dealerships.
23:10 DaemonFC; Then someone had the idea. "Hey, let's just make these things out of aluminum and plastic, and put a lot of terrible software in there, and lots of buttons, and cut the warranty down to where it's over with while the car still smells new and we don't have to fix any of it!".
