00:13 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
00:13 DaemonFC; Most of the complaints I hear about Wayland end up boiling down to some corner case that for most people is a "You're joking, right?" because they don't even use it.
00:13 DaemonFC; Or XWayland is actually good enough for that.
00:13 DaemonFC; But the reason you can do all of those corner cases is because X11 has no concept of security so there's nothing stopping you.
00:13 DaemonFC; It's the same people who lamented the loss of Linspire because every other distribution got in your way if you wanted graphical root logins.
00:15 MinceR; yeah, who even plays FPS games on multihead
00:15 MinceR; or does screen sharing

00:22 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
00:22 DaemonFC; X11's codebase is so old (about as old as me) that it doesn't compile cleanly with anything modern unless you hide over 10,000 warnings.
00:22 DaemonFC; AFAIK nobody ever actually went back and investigated anything that those warnings were about, they just set things up so the compiler wouldn't tell you about it.
00:22 DaemonFC; So rest assured that there's plenty of other bad stuff in there.
00:22 DaemonFC; Over 10,000 compiler warnings is actually pretty hilarious considering how small the compiled code turns out to be.
00:23 MinceR; yeah, the geniuses who came up with wayland don't understand the code
00:23 MinceR; they also don't understand the design
00:23 MinceR; that's why they came up with wayland.
00:27 CrystalMath; run untrusted X clients in a Xephyr
00:27 CrystalMath; (best solution IMO)
00:28 CrystalMath; this should include clients that have vulnerabilities by themselves
00:28 CrystalMath; other such programs that don't use X should be disallowed from reaching X
00:28 CrystalMath; that's proper sandboxing
00:29 MinceR; i'd prefer to have people with a clue design a new protocol and a new windowing system

01:05 DaemonFC; The only reason they don't have to shoot Americans in the back for trying to escape is that Canada would deport us and Mexico is an even bigger shithole than the United States.

01:07 XRevan86; I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Communism, is in fact, Socialism, or as I've recently taken to calling it, state capitalism plus planned economy. Communism is not a political system unto itself, but rather an economical component of a fully functioning Anarchist system.
01:07 DaemonFC; I wouldn't describe the political nature of the Soviet Union as Anarchist.

02:31 DaemonFC; MinceR, A lot of Chrome browsers like to unload idle tabs as a way of hiding how much memory they actually use.
02:32 DaemonFC; When you come back to them later, it has to reload the entire page.
02:32 DaemonFC; With Fedora (recent releases), idle tab processes in something like Vivaldi or Firefox would work like Chrome on Chrome OS, sort of.
02:32 DaemonFC; They get paged into a compressed block device in RAM that acts as the SWAP file.

07:15 DaemonFC; I'm surprised that the perpetual calendar on a watch with this many functions has to end on December 31st, 2099.
07:15 DaemonFC; I can't think of a reason for it other than that it only has a program that goes "2000 was a leap year, so assume every year that divides by 4 is", but they could have written a little more code to keep it going for much longer, in theory.
07:16 DaemonFC; I'm almost disappointed Casio put in an infrared scanner to realign the hands but not a calendar that goes on a fair bit longer.
07:16 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
07:16 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
07:16 DaemonFC; Calendars that are only good for one century seem like a computer problem that happened in the 1970s and 80s, by companies like Microsoft that couldn't foresee that becoming a big problem.
07:16 DaemonFC; 77 years is longer than I will need this watch to work, but engineers should take pride in their work.

07:16 DaemonFC; An epoch of Jan 1, 2000 with no accounting for the next three centuries is sloppy.
07:17 DaemonFC; With a slightly more complex program than just taking us to 2400, you could actually go as far as the watch's processor could calculate a date without an integer overflow. With unsigned integers, you could go quite a while, even if the watch's CPU is fairly primitive.

08:20 schestowitz[TR]; western media
08:20 schestowitz[TR]; 1) CHINA IS OPPRESSIVE!!! It has COVID eradication policy like lockdowns
08:20 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
08:20 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
08:20 DaemonFC; Two stories from China.
08:20 DaemonFC; "Running out of workers due to COVID"
08:20 DaemonFC; "Funeral homes in Beijing overwhelmed"
08:20 *immibis_ has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
08:20 schestowitz[TR]; (which the West TOO did)
08:20 DaemonFC; So they're getting the same thing the US did. They just staved it off for a couple of years before they let sanity lapse.
08:20 DaemonFC; I suppose it was always doomed to fail in "free" countries just because of the "You're not gonna tell me what to do!" effect.
08:20 DaemonFC; You can see the right-wing bias in the news. They only see most people as being important if they can work. Especially Asians. (Not white.)
08:20 schestowitz[TR]; 1) CHINA IS OPPRESSIVE!!! It lets COVID spread!!!
08:21 *immibis has quit (connection closed)
08:21 schestowitz[TR]; (which is what the West has done for 2 years already
08:21 schestowitz[TR]; China evil
08:21 schestowitz[TR]; for doing what we do

08:22 schestowitz[TR]; DaemonFC: "whites" an work too
08:22 schestowitz[TR]; but won't work for $1.5 per hour
08:23 schestowitz[TR]; hence,
08:23 schestowitz[TR]; they are "lazy" and "spoiled"
08:23 schestowitz[TR]; they don't want to sleep in the workplace either
08:23 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], If you don't work, you don't eat, but there's no work for you.
08:24 DaemonFC; Here's a gun.
08:24 DaemonFC; -America
08:24 TR News; "On-prem (Clown-prem) For small projects, it's fine to use hosted CI/CD services, but for anything bigger than a toy project, you should probably be spinning up your CI/CD runners inside your own clown account." https://matt-rickard.com/an-ideal-ci-cd-system
08:24 TR Bot; An Ideal CI/CD System
08:24 schestowitz[TR]; DaemonFC: "kill yourself" - Hicks, American
08:25 DaemonFC; He died of prostate cancer at 34.
08:25 DaemonFC; I've already outlived him.
08:32 immibis; DaemonFC: you're complaining about capitalism
08:32 immibis; your watch maybe calculates things in BCD and that's why it stops at 99
08:41 DaemonFC; Hmm, seems like they could have put a more capable processor in it very cheaply.
08:41 DaemonFC; Even toothbrushes have bluetooth in them now.
08:41 DaemonFC; And you don't even have to pay a lot for that.
08:42 DaemonFC; I assume that after 2099, the date would be wrong, but everything else would work.
08:50 *psydruid (~psydruid@jevhxkzmtrbww.irc) has left #techrights
08:50 immibis; why do you assume there is a processing power limitation
08:53 *psydruid (~psydruid@jevhxkzmtrbww.irc) has joined #techrights
08:54 DaemonFC; It's likely a hardware limitation somewhere along the way to get the cost down a few cents per watch.
08:55 DaemonFC; Who is going to outlive the calendar?

08:59 IPFS; IPFS downstream 60 minutes average 34.13 k/sec., IPFS upstream 215.23 average k/sec., average swarm size 0
09:01 *u-amarsh04 has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
09:02 immibis; it's likely a complexity-related decision
09:03 DaemonFC; "The surge has caught officials and companies off guard. One chief executive of a large nursing home in the capital said the government had asked large state-owned enterprises, including China Resources and Sinopharm, to increase production of fever medication after sick Beijingers emptied pharmacy shelves."
09:03 DaemonFC; [...]
09:03 DaemonFC; "One boss of a printed circuit board factory in the eastern province of Shandong said only 20 per cent of staff came to work on Friday, the rest calling in sick with Covid."
09:03 immibis; they wrote a list of what the watch should do, and didn't make it do more than that
09:03 immibis; DaemonFC: Yes, China has progressed to the point of killing off its excess population
09:03 DaemonFC; "One manager at a car assembly plant in the northern province of Hebei said his group plans to reinstate the closed loop system, whereby staff live and work on-site during Covid outbreaks, in order to keep production going while avoiding catching the virus.
09:03 DaemonFC; We will have no workers left otherwise, he said."
09:03 immibis; unfortunately my stock broker doesn't offer a lot of ways to be bearish on china
09:04 immibis; i found one short yuan etf; but yuan is terribly manipulated already
09:05 DaemonFC; It's looking a lot like "It blows through in a month and makes everyone in the country sick." outcome.
09:06 DaemonFC; Which is pretty much the worst thing that can possibly happen, for the economy that is.

21:15 DaemonFC; I was talking to the doctor last week and she asked what I liked to eat and I said "Eh, all the crap, you know. Taco Bell. Rally's. It was better in the 90s when they refried the beans in cooking lard. So many people smoked that they had ashtrays at Burger King, and you saw no end to the people who were like 90 or 100 sitting there eating it and smoking with the other hand. Now the government tells us what to eat and an anti-smoking campaign
21:15 DaemonFC; that would make Hitler proud and we drop dead at 50."
21:16 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
21:16 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC@mstdn.social
21:16 DaemonFC; I think that the reason that modern medicine doesn't really help people live longer, fuller lives is because doctors just sit there and do nothing and watch you die, and send you the copayments.
21:16 DaemonFC; Back in the 90s, you came in, they treated what you had.
21:16 DaemonFC; If it was high blood pressure, here's some Zestril, if it was cholesterol, here's a statin, if it was a bacterial infection, here's a Z-Pack.
21:16 DaemonFC; Now they don't treat it.
21:16 DaemonFC; If it's bp or LDL, they say eat better.
21:16 DaemonFC; If it's bacterial, no antibiotics.
21:16 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
21:16 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC@mstdn.social
21:16 DaemonFC; The whole "we can't give you antibiotics for a bacterial infection" is cute.
21:16 DaemonFC; 99% of the antibiotics are given to livestock, which isn't even sick, to make it grow fatter, and your vast reservoir of super-bacteria is in the livestock, not the humans.
21:16 DaemonFC; So when a patient comes in and has a sinus infection you could easily cure with Augmentin and you don't give them some, you're a quack.
21:16 DaemonFC; Unfortunately, the lunatics are running the asylum in modern medicine.
21:16 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
21:16 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
21:16 DaemonFC; And the super-bugs are being created to make the animals enormous with antibiotics, and that's the antibiotic abuse.
21:16 DaemonFC; When you get a package of chicken breasts and it looks like they came from Dolly Parton the Chicken, that's what's going on.

21:18 DaemonFC; They got smarter this time.
21:18 DaemonFC; When they toss the mostly empty carcasses on the conveyor belt and send them to be trimmed and treated with ammonia and then stirred together, and then back into the ground beef, a very sizable bribe was paid to Donald Trump so they could call it "Ground Beef" in the end.

21:27 DaemonFC; The EU is pretty crazy.
21:27 DaemonFC; I read why these cars have those stupid "engine covers" and it all started out when the governments demanded that the car have some recycled components.
21:27 DaemonFC; Putting a cover over the engine was a way to comply with that.
21:27 DaemonFC; Funny thing is that in some cars, this contributed to the engine catching fire and the car burning up due to heat and oil accumulation.
21:27 DaemonFC; When I had the old Impala serviced for recall, they took the cover off because it was part of what could cause a fire.
21:29 *psydruid (~psydruid@jevhxkzmtrbww.irc) has left #techrights
21:30 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
21:30 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
21:30 DaemonFC; One reason I just take the engine cover off and throw it away when I get a car is because they don't do anything except trap heat and oil and cause things to degrade and possibly burn up.
21:30 DaemonFC; The 3800 V6 spent 40 years without an engine cover and then GM decided that for the last 7 years it needs one so it can explode and wear down your spark plug wires, and such.
21:34 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
21:34 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
21:34 DaemonFC; Another way of looking at the USDA report is the following:
21:34 DaemonFC; The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.
21:34 DaemonFC; The Illinois minimum wage (for most people) is $15.
21:34 DaemonFC; So if you have even one child, you need to work 24,000 hours (3,000 8 hour shifts) in Illinois at minimum wage.
21:34 DaemonFC; Even if you assume that the government will force me to pay for part of it by stealing my money and giving it to you under threat of imprisonment, it will still be a burden on you would you even want to do 2,000 days for this?
21:36 *psydruid (~psydruid@jevhxkzmtrbww.irc) has joined #techrights

21:37 DaemonFC; They think that they'll just waddle on down to the welfare office and make it someone else's problem.
21:37 DaemonFC; They don't get that while they do make everyone in society suffer for them having it, more than 2/3rds of the problem (including possibly being arrested as an unfit parent and having a criminal record) will be their problem.
21:37 DaemonFC; So, people should quit making trouble for both of us, but that's not how this goes.
21:38 DaemonFC; MinceR, ^
21:51 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
21:51 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
21:51 DaemonFC; The next doctor who tells me it's just going to have to run its course without testing/culturing anything is going to get the following response.
21:51 DaemonFC; "Hi there. Are there any grown ups around that I can talk to?"
21:51 DaemonFC; It's getting to where you need to find a doctor in their 70s or 80s and they're all going to be gone soon.
21:59 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
21:59 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
21:59 DaemonFC; If you compared Windows and the x86 PC to a car, it would be like someone kept adding 500 pounds to the car every couple of years and just tossing in a bigger engine.
21:59 DaemonFC; Windows 11 is at the point where you get around at 2 MPGs and not very fast even though the engine has 2000 horsepower.
21:59 DaemonFC; It's just insane how badly it runs. I bought a new Tiger Lake i7 laptop and Windows 10 had noticeable jank that's just not there with Linux.
21:59 DaemonFC; Linux will work until the laptop is just too broken to go on.
22:01 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
22:01 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
22:01 DaemonFC; And there's no reason for Windows to do this "always getting slower and demanding fake security modules now" except for this incestuous relationship where they make Windows slower, OEMs and Intel sell you a new PC, which comes with a new Windows licensing fee, and around and round you go.
22:01 DaemonFC; This should be illegal
