03:54 schestowitz[TR]; but that's a false assumption
03:54 bagira; yeah the aspiring ladder climber should only take that role if they plan on changing companies in two years to transition to a formal leadership role
03:54 schestowitz[TR]; it's like saying if you change from cook to senior cook, whatever that is, it'll be worth a buck more per hour
03:55 bagira; the technical track doesn't lead to that but the experience of leading the team can be used as a springboard
03:55 schestowitz[TR]; and some average workplace won't ask you to do the dishes
03:55 bagira; i wouldn't do the dishes
03:55 schestowitz[TR]; leading a team typically means doing less
03:55 schestowitz[TR]; "leading" is not a technical task
03:55 schestowitz[TR]; it's "politics"
03:55 bagira; that's how it's supposed to be
03:55 bagira; rarely is
03:55 schestowitz[TR]; so you miss out on experience
03:55 schestowitz[TR]; like,
03:56 schestowitz[TR]; "i am s/w dev... know how to draw up shift pattern"
03:56 schestowitz[TR]; "i am a cook, know how to lock the door when it's 9pm"
03:57 schestowitz[TR]; "i am a secretary, know how to plead for vacant lecture room"
03:57 schestowitz[TR]; a coder does not know how to manage an office
03:57 schestowitz[TR]; that's someone else's job
03:57 schestowitz[TR]; leave it to them
03:57 bagira; yeah a good s/w manager will be familiar with the work, they should have at least spent some time on a dev team to be familiar with the types of problems that get dealt with so they have a frame of reference, but their core skill is personnel management
03:57 schestowitz[TR]; things like,
03:57 bagira; better to look at arby's than google
03:57 schestowitz[TR]; calling a cleaner
03:57 schestowitz[TR]; doing payroll
03:57 schestowitz[TR]; why study that??
03:58 schestowitz[TR]; speaking of myself:
03:58 schestowitz[TR]; i can deal with a variety of tasks
03:58 schestowitz[TR]; sysadmin, coding, some irc, some writing, link curation
03:58 schestowitz[TR]; rianne does most of the cooking
03:59 schestowitz[TR]; (when she's not on holiday)
03:59 bagira; irc is almost irrelevant these days in sys and s/w
03:59 schestowitz[TR]; and she deals with the post that comes in
03:59 IPFS; IPFS downstream 60 minutes average 34.13 k/sec., IPFS upstream 215.23 average k/sec., average swarm size 0
03:59 schestowitz[TR]; irc requires some admin
03:59 schestowitz[TR]; backup of user DB
03:59 bagira; if you go the sys route you have to learn some technical writing, and the core platforms and os's you'll be dealing with
03:59 schestowitz[TR]; system updates, logs..
04:00 bagira; basic design principles at the senior level of both tracks
04:00 schestowitz[TR]; gulag wanted to hire me as technical writer
04:00 bagira; these days they need some devops exposure
04:00 schestowitz[TR]; that was around 2008
04:00 bagira; most devs get hung up on that last couple of bits
04:01 bagira; not the devops piece but the technical writing and the design principles
04:01 bagira; they think just making some bullshit diagram that doesn't have anything in it and talking lofty about patterns and paradigms is remotely involved in that
04:01 schestowitz[TR]; uml?
04:02 schestowitz[TR]; do they still teach that in cs?
04:02 schestowitz[TR]; the "cloud" thing became a real term
04:02 schestowitz[TR]; DBs are stack of cans
04:02 schestowitz[TR]; and placeholders became a thing
04:02 schestowitz[TR]; "the clown"
04:02 bagira; just try telling a javascript developer who is 12 years in that "factory method" isn't part of a distributed system design
04:03 schestowitz[TR]; one colleague used to make diagrams of things
04:03 bagira; no almost no one uses UML these days
04:03 schestowitz[TR]; of course nobody but him made use of it
04:03 schestowitz[TR]; maybe something to show to clueless "suits" in clients
04:03 bagira; they're coming out of graduation with the belief they need to know it and then being laughed at the first few times they try to introduce it
04:03 schestowitz[TR]; "look! an abstract picture for dumb-ass managers who never wrote a line of code"
04:04 schestowitz[TR]; time-wasting
04:04 schestowitz[TR]; months later the systems change
04:04 schestowitz[TR]; and the diagrams are out of date
04:04 schestowitz[TR]; but "managers" like pictures
04:04 schestowitz[TR]; for their "powerpoint presentation"
04:04 schestowitz[TR]; not code
04:05 bagira; the problem with diagrams in design is that alot of devs think that the diagram is the design but it's not. it's an artifact in an ongoing design cycle. they confuse designing in that way with "waterfall" methodologies, and then their own error leads to them pretending that skipping design is "agile"
04:05 schestowitz[TR]; the diagrma come later
04:05 schestowitz[TR]; typically
04:05 schestowitz[TR]; to "document" what already runs
04:05 schestowitz[TR]; it's hard to decide upfront everything
04:05 bagira; yep until shit hits the fan with contract management or sales
04:05 schestowitz[TR]; and if you insist on the "design", you make bad choices
04:05 schestowitz[TR]; to stick to the "design'
04:06 bagira; good design is a cyclic process with feedback loops fed from various parts of the org
04:06 schestowitz[TR]; yeah
04:06 schestowitz[TR]; and speak to geeks
04:06 schestowitz[TR]; toss MBAs in the bin room
04:06 schestowitz[TR]; they are obstruction
04:06 schestowitz[TR]; they have one goal
04:06 bagira; yeah managers need high level updates and should not be involved in technical decisions
04:06 schestowitz[TR]; one goal _only_
04:07 schestowitz[TR]; to make themselves _seem_ necessary
04:07 schestowitz[TR]; e.g. micromanagement

04:07 schestowitz[TR]; they are the idiots who force people back to "the office"

04:08 schestowitz[TR]; ipfs running well today https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmVA4areAp8qhYxiNP5xuAYP83kX1fn7tWWmJvxaWquq8J
04:08 schestowitz[TR]; it was a bit laggy last night
04:08 schestowitz[TR]; anyway, "IT" is in crisis
04:08 schestowitz[TR]; it is one of SEVERAL crises atm
04:08 schestowitz[TR]; among them
04:08 schestowitz[TR]; -TOO many companies have DEBT
04:08 schestowitz[TR]; (inc. Sirius
04:08 schestowitz[TR]; - the DEBT is GROWING
04:09 bagira; sure it is, we flooded that workforce with entitled narcissists that don't want to do the work involved in what they do and expect huge salaries without being able to perform
04:09 schestowitz[TR]; (they operate at a loss, they don't think ahead, they SHOW OFF)
04:09 schestowitz[TR]; -the decisions are made by total posers
04:09 schestowitz[TR]; (like "the clown")
04:09 schestowitz[TR]; -the "customers" aren't listened to

04:55 schestowitz[TR]; to pay for car
04:55 schestowitz[TR]; to get to work
04:55 DaemonFC; The guy laughed and handed it back to me with a major toe out problem that I didn't come in with.
04:55 schestowitz[TR]; no savings
04:55 schestowitz[TR]; or barely any
04:55 DaemonFC; Thank god there was a district manager by chance at a store two miles away that fixed it and chewed ass over at the other store.

04:56 DaemonFC; From my review of the Waukegan store.
04:56 schestowitz[TR]; Apple Adds $25 Million Venture Capital Commitment for Minority-Owned Businesses
04:56 schestowitz[TR]; 25 million
04:56 schestowitz[TR]; lots of money
04:56 schestowitz[TR]; Creepy Uncle Bill says he wants to help
04:56 schestowitz[TR]; Xi
04:57 schestowitz[TR]; with "health"
04:57 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], At this point I'm just glad they fixed it EVENTUALLY.
04:57 DaemonFC; I probably did need the cam bolts.
04:57 schestowitz[TR]; while helping Epstein trafffic litrtle girls
04:57 schestowitz[TR]; to get "little blow jobs"
04:57 schestowitz[TR]; iirc, offer xi only a few millions
04:57 schestowitz[TR]; for "health"
04:57 DaemonFC; Because the Chevy dealer couldn't get it dead on accurate with their machine and the factory bolts.
04:57 schestowitz[TR]; to undercut bliken
04:57 schestowitz[TR]; fancies himself US foreign secretary of usa
04:57 schestowitz[TR]; "no election necessary"
04:58 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], My guess is the suspension or frame is a little worn and needs more forgiving camber bolts than OEM to get a perfect alignment.
04:58 schestowitz[TR]; "got 3 jets, will travel"
04:58 schestowitz[TR]; ":except when I want little girls"
04:58 DaemonFC; IT wasn't out of spec with the factory bolts at Chevy, but it was not ideal.
04:58 schestowitz[TR]; "then I hitch Jeffrey's plane"
04:58 schestowitz[TR]; "and leave mine parked"
04:58 DaemonFC; It's not THAT outrageous that a 16 year old car is going to need aftermarket cam bolts in the back with brand new struts.

04:59 schestowitz[TR]; all those new parts
04:59 DaemonFC; Yeah, mom's 2003 Impala is working fine.

05:00 schestowitz[TR]; impulsive buying
05:00 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], I told him apply for team lead. Mention to the boss that he has something they need that others don't have.
05:00 schestowitz[TR]; and you cannot get yourself to admit this
05:00 DaemonFC; The position requires a FOID card to sell ammo.
05:00 schestowitz[TR]; now you have expensive old car
05:00 DaemonFC; He has one.
05:00 schestowitz[TR]; to drive mandy to 4-hour shifts
05:00 schestowitz[TR]; that barely bring in 60% net
05:00 schestowitz[TR]; %60
05:01 schestowitz[TR]; $60
05:01 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], I haven't had to drive him to any four hour shifts.

05:01 DaemonFC; Err, PTO.
05:01 schestowitz[TR]; <DaemonFC> The position requires a FOID card to sell ammo.
05:01 schestowitz[TR]; it's not his position
05:01 schestowitz[TR]; this is all hypothetical

05:01 DaemonFC; Well, how are they going to give the position to anyone else?
05:01 schestowitz[TR]; and they probably want someone with better English
05:01 DaemonFC; Nobody but him has a FOID card and that's a dealbreaker.
05:01 schestowitz[TR]; <DaemonFC> He's either called in or used PPTO.
05:02 schestowitz[TR]; i'm sure he can do that for 10 more years
05:02 DaemonFC; I don't think that it's going to go on like this too long.
05:02 schestowitz[TR]; many people in ILL have FOID cards

05:02 schestowitz[TR]; well, you have a kid to feed
05:03 schestowitz[TR]; it's called buick
05:03 DaemonFC; <schestowitz[TR]> many people in ILL have FOID cards
05:03 DaemonFC; <schestowitz[TR]> and many crave a job
05:03 DaemonFC; Not enough to work at Pep Boys I guess.
05:03 schestowitz[TR]; something is rotten
05:03 schestowitz[TR]; like sirius 'jobs
05:03 DaemonFC; They have one guy back there to take 4 hours to get to your alignment, fake it, make it worse, and throw your keys back.
05:03 schestowitz[TR]; they cannot fill them
05:03 schestowitz[TR]; because they're corrupt
05:03 schestowitz[TR]; and people won't work for them
05:03 schestowitz[TR]; I heard from several candidates
05:03 schestowitz[TR]; they lost interest after applying for the positions
05:04 schestowitz[TR]; everyone is leaving the company
05:04 schestowitz[TR]; the jobs ads don't say THQAT
05:04 schestowitz[TR]; biab
05:04 DaemonFC; You think they get someone and they realize it's a corrupt shop, and it's not just the corruption. They're being treated like shit on top of the things they're being told to do to people until only the worst peopl remain>
05:05 DaemonFC; I suppose that's a working theory for why the dirty shop (Pep Boys Waukegan) can't get anyone.
05:05 TR News; The quantity and quality of "LINUX" material on the WWW is declining AND deteriorating, respectively
05:05 TR News; WWW has no viable future
05:05 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], I might offer to take a look at Shaq's alignment machine.
05:05 DaemonFC; I might be able to get it working again.
05:05 TR News; The WWW may be around for another 10 years. Not too clear about longer than that...
05:06 DaemonFC; I'd probably ask to be paid in shop credit or something for a job that needs done on the car. Get it in writing that I have the credit, you know.
05:06 schestowitz[TR]; you lack experience
05:06 schestowitz[TR]; you never works in car agencies before
05:06 schestowitz[TR]; and you must compete
05:06 DaemonFC; I can make a Windows XP machine that had a hard drive crash work again most likely.
05:06 schestowitz[TR]; it's not like "oh, i want this job" "YES! ACCEPTED!"
05:06 DaemonFC; That's what happened.
05:07 DaemonFC; They lost Windows XP and their alignment program because of a hard disk crash.
05:07 schestowitz[TR]; and you have expunged record with the police
05:07 DaemonFC; An expunged record is gone.
05:07 schestowitz[TR]; no
05:07 schestowitz[TR]; it's expunged
05:07 mjg59_; The entire point of the records being expunged is that it can't affect employment
05:07 DaemonFC; Expunged means gone in Illinois.
05:07 DaemonFC; Even the court can't pull it up. Destroyed.
05:07 mjg59_; Still allowed to talk about the fact that it happened though, thanks to the 1st amendment
05:08 DaemonFC; In California, it's different.
05:08 DaemonFC; You can get an expungement but people can still see it.
05:08 DaemonFC; The only thing that actually changes in California is that there's a note that says they can see it but they can't discriminate. But they know it happened.
05:08 DaemonFC; That's what Roy is thinking about.
05:08 schestowitz[TR]; you could keep your old impala and have budget for 12 months in the bank
05:08 DaemonFC; But Illinois isn't California.
05:09 schestowitz[TR]; and be less tight
05:09 schestowitz[TR]; iMpulsive Buying
05:09 schestowitz[TR]; (Apple
05:09 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], Yeah. It was an ugly little bitch but it always got me around.
05:09 schestowitz[TR]; savings are freedom
05:09 schestowitz[TR]; freedom is... well, freedom
05:10 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], I'm looking into buying a Chevy.
05:10 schestowitz[TR]; many people don't get freedom
05:10 DaemonFC; A 1968 Chevy.
05:10 schestowitz[TR]; they mistake it for something else
05:10 DaemonFC; Not for me, not with my money.
05:10 schestowitz[TR]; like, "got car"
05:10 schestowitz[TR]; "got pistol"
05:10 schestowitz[TR]; "bunker"
05:10 DaemonFC; Mom's friend at church asked me to investigate a 1968 C50 as a potential work truck.
05:10 DaemonFC; <mjg59_> Still allowed to talk about the fact that it happened though, thanks to the 1st amendment
05:11 schestowitz[TR]; RMS spoke about this in the 90s
05:11 schestowitz[TR]; iirc, it's still in WIRED mag
05:11 DaemonFC; Well, if you don't have any proof that it happened then it's defamation.
05:11 schestowitz[TR]; which is BTW a dead publication now
05:11 schestowitz[TR]; of Conde Nasty
05:11 schestowitz[TR]; they killed it off
05:11 DaemonFC; Without a record, you're unlikely to get proof unless you already knew.
05:11 schestowitz[TR]; startred reposting Ars drpizza there
05:12 schestowitz[TR]; <DaemonFC> Well, if you don't have any proof that it happened then it's defamation.
05:12 schestowitz[TR]; no
05:12 schestowitz[TR]; it's defamation if
05:12 schestowitz[TR]; 1) it's false
05:12 schestowitz[TR]; 2) you knew it was false
05:12 schestowitz[TR]; 3) you spread it anyway
05:12 DaemonFC; Well, if the court doesn't even have records about it...
05:12 schestowitz[TR]; you are projectingf what you want to believe
05:12 schestowitz[TR]; into this expungement thing
05:12 DaemonFC; Defamation also says it has to be actually harmful.
05:13 schestowitz[TR]; no
05:13 schestowitz[TR]; that's for damage calculation
05:13 DaemonFC; Like, if I sum up what someone says but summing it up is basically correct and didn't harm them, then they'd have a hard time getting anything.
05:13 schestowitz[TR]; if gulagboy cannot get a real job
05:13 schestowitz[TR]; because TR exposed many bad things he did
05:13 schestowitz[TR]; and TR said true things
05:14 schestowitz[TR]; that it knew were true
05:14 mjg59_; Also a bunch of lies
05:14 schestowitz[TR]; then it doesn't matter if he loses a billion dollars in potential income
05:14 schestowitz[TR]; that's 1st am
05:14 schestowitz[TR]; which he does not understand
05:14 schestowitz[TR]; nor tolerate
05:14 schestowitz[TR]; he toook us citizenship for one reason:
05:14 schestowitz[TR]; MONEY
05:14 mjg59_; I understand that the 1st amendment doesn't apply in the UK
05:14 schestowitz[TR]; trump: people I know go to africa to make money
05:14 mjg59_; But also US citizenship costs me money in the long run
05:14 schestowitz[TR]; (paraphrasing trumpo)
05:14 DaemonFC; He took US citizenship as a form of hedging his bets.
05:15 XRevan86; schestowitz: Ye can disable autoplay in Odysee via the settings button on the player panel.
05:15 schestowitz[TR]; gulagboy left uk &* ireland for money
05:15 DaemonFC; The same reason anyone gains another citizenship and doesn't revoke the old one.
05:15 mjg59_; I now have a lifetime obligation to file US taxes, which wouldn't be the case if I'd stayed as a permanent resident
05:15 schestowitz[TR]; compensating for things he lacks
05:15 schestowitz[TR]; like 30 pounds
05:15 schestowitz[TR]; (not the currency)
05:15 DaemonFC; mjg59_, You also wouldn't have had to say you agree to defend the US Constitution and then say there shouldn't be a US constitution.
05:15 schestowitz[TR]; XRevan86: i did not know
05:15 mjg59_; That's not a thing I said
05:16 schestowitz[TR]; biab
05:16 DaemonFC; You said the first and second amendments are unfortunate.
05:16 schestowitz[TR]; chatting there to people I cannot see
05:16 mjg59_; No, I said that there were some things that the 1st amendment permits that are unfortunate
05:16 DaemonFC; Same thing.
05:16 DaemonFC; Either you agree with it or you don't agree with it. If you don't, get out.
05:16 TR News; Debian 12 seems solid so far. Good job. http://flosslinuxblog.blogspot.com/2023/06/202306101949-release-of-install-media.html

05:17 DaemonFC; I never actually swore an oath because I inherited citizenship from my parents.
05:17 DaemonFC; I never had to say I agreed with it and would defend it all.
05:17 TR News; Oddly enough, patching Debian 11 some hours ago resulted in Mumble losing some settings, but Murmur is still there like before.
05:17 mjg59_; You just keep having arguments with a version of me that you've made up
05:17 DaemonFC; Also, there are cases they can revoke your citizenship and send you back.
05:18 DaemonFC; They can never take mine.
05:18 mjg59_; And I can never be elected president
05:18 DaemonFC; So you're not exactly the same kind of citizen. There are different types.
05:18 TR News; Having said that, it is a NEWER version of Mumble and security matters a LOT with voice chat.
05:19 DaemonFC; I would be in favor of amending the Constitution to say "If the person has renounced all other citizenship and has been a US citizen for 20 years or more."
05:19 mjg59_; DaemonFC: There are cases where your citizenship could be revoked
05:19 DaemonFC; As far as Presidential qualifications.
05:19 DaemonFC; The Arnold Exception.

05:19 mjg59_; Sure there are. They all depend on you having another citizenship as well.
05:19 schestowitz[TR]; "shout fire in theatre" and all that
05:19 DaemonFC; The US Supreme Court has ruled that you can't strip a natural born US citizen of citizenship.

05:20 DaemonFC; The Communist Control Act came after that ruling and is therefore unconstitutional as it pertains to citizenship stripping, well, for me anyway.
05:20 DaemonFC; I could become a Communist Party member and they couldn't do much.
05:20 DaemonFC; They could deport you.
05:20 mjg59_; For instance, you can voluntarily renounce your citizenship, which triggers revocation of your citizenship
05:20 DaemonFC; That would be voluntary.
05:21 DaemonFC; Citizenship stripping is not voluntary.
05:21 DaemonFC; It's a punishment.
05:21 XRevan86; DaemonFC: Fun fact, in Ukraine there's no such requirement, one has to live in Ukraine for 10 years and know the state language.

05:21 DaemonFC; You also can't renounce your citizenship from within the United States.
05:21 XRevan86; In Russia one has to never have had any other citizenship.
05:22 DaemonFC; And since I don't have a passport it means I can't renounce my citizenship because I have no legal way of reaching a US embassy in another country.
05:22 DaemonFC; So mjg59_ is wrong again.
05:22 XRevan86; And Russian citizenship can't be renounced at all, if I understand it correctly.

05:23 DaemonFC; I suppose I could sneak across the border into Canada, illegally, find my way to an Embassy, surrender my citizenship, and become stateless and illegally present in Canada.
05:23 TR News; Gemini is a meal. WWW in 2023 is some food (5kB) with a swamp around it (5MB of crap).
05:23 DaemonFC; But they could still deport me to the United States, which would likely accept me. Then I'd be stuck in the United States. They couldn't deport me but I'd have no right to do anything here.

05:26 TR News; Even Nazi Kanye West managed to sober up and sneak out of impulsively buying Parler. West is a lot smarter than Apartheid Elon.
05:26 DaemonFC; Until the US Supreme Court changes that, then that's the law.

05:53 DaemonFC; "The Waukegan store has customers waiting in line for the "alignment" and god knows what they're actually driving off with.
05:53 DaemonFC; Who gets an alignment and thinks to check the alignment somewhere else unless they just got completely screwed and their wheel is so cockeyed you can't miss how badly this handles? Like what Waukegan Pep Boys did to my car.
05:53 DaemonFC; I asked the manager at Round Lake Pep Boys what they did differently and he said "Aligned the car correctly."
05:53 DaemonFC; The implication of the Round Lake manager saying that they "aligned it right" is that either the alignment machine is broken or misconfigured in Waukegan and/or they have Beavis and Butt-Head doing car alignments back there. Or both.
05:53 DaemonFC; When I say Beavis and Butt-Head I mean I feel like their poor neighbor Mr. Anderson who always had the misfortune of "encountering" them everywhere he went.
05:53 DaemonFC; They have a lot of open job positions at that store. They probably treat people like shit and tell them to do dirty things to the customers until they can't stand it anymore and quit.

21:47 DaemonFC; schestowitz-pi2, So here's my review for Waukegan Pep Boys.
21:48 DaemonFC; I think I have it where I want it within Google's character limit.
21:48 DaemonFC; "I previously had good service at this location on my 2003 Impala with tires and a battery so I came back when I had just had new struts at Car-X on my 2008 Buick Lacrosse.
21:48 DaemonFC; Unfortunately, Car-X had their alignment machine take a dump on them, so I went to Pep Boys.
21:48 DaemonFC; I paid $120 for a 1 year alignment package. They adjusted the alignment, allegedly. But whatever they did had my steering wheel off to the left to go straight and my car was dog tracking badly. I came back today and they told me put camber bolts in the rear and they could fix it. So I did, and then they made an even bigger mess than before.
21:48 DaemonFC; For another $300.
21:48 DaemonFC; When I said I didn't want to pay them more to screw up my ride worse than RANDOM alignment values I got with the new struts, the guy, Mike, then suggested cutting into the knuckle to make the strut "fit right" because there was allegedly something wrong with my car.
21:48 DaemonFC; When I got a little hot under the collar over them suggesting this and with everything they had done so far throwing the camber off in the wrong direction worse than the last thing they did, Mike escorted me out of the store and refused to release my car until I paid; essentially they ****ed up my ride worse than a randomly misaligned car and then billed me over $400 so far and they had wanted another $150 to cut into the strut and knuckle.
21:48 DaemonFC; Which I was assured he did "all the time" when he worked at a GM dealer. What happened to the Dealer and his job there? I wonder.
21:48 DaemonFC; So I left. I was worried about Mike causing an incident where they screwed me over with my car and would create a "situation" if this kept going. I decided to just pay the $300 and fight it with my bank later.
21:48 DaemonFC; I decided to call to the Round Lake store and told them the situation and they fixed everything without carving up my car like a roast.
21:48 DaemonFC; I asked the manager what they did. He said "Aligned the car correctly."
21:48 DaemonFC; The implication is that the alignment machine is broken or misconfigured in Waukegan and/or they have Beavis and Butt-Head doing alignments.
21:48 DaemonFC; The Round Lake store got the alignment dead on, accurate, better than the Chevy dealer in Grayslake, and no more crooked steering wheel or back end like a teenager's riced out Honda.
21:48 DaemonFC; Don't go to Pep Boys Waukegan. Run like hell. It's no wonder they can't fill any positions with anyone competent in this store with such grotesquely incompetent management. The fish rots from the head down.
21:48 DaemonFC; Take a look at the photos for how bad Waukegan Pep Boys screwed up my final alignment at that store. Mike didn't want me taking photos of how bad they managed to screw up a simple wheel alignment and threatened me if I didn't leave. Don't let them touch your car if you care about it.
21:48 DaemonFC; These alignment machines that they use are designed so you could train pretty much anyone to use it. It's basically do this until that turns green.
21:49 DaemonFC; Most of the time it works okay if you have a completely stock car but you can botch it if the guy is really stupid or the machine is busted, so he just hands it back and calls it aligned no matter how badly it's pulling.
21:49 DaemonFC; You could take it to a blind person with no machine and have them turn things to random positions and get a better alignment job than Pep Boys.
21:49 DaemonFC; Mike blamed my Monroe Quick struts which are identical to OEM measurements for a new strut assembly. He would have had trouble with an AC Delco as well.
21:49 DaemonFC; I usually go to Car-X. If their alignment machine had worked this never would have unfolded. If my alignment drifts I will drive to Round Lake to use my guarantee from Pep Boys.
21:49 DaemonFC; I try to take very good care of what I drive because I depend on it to get me around safely. When I explained to Shaq and Hector at Car-X on Green Bay what happened at Pep Boys, they were horrified and said that they have no business treating a customer like that and that I've been a good customer at their shop and they couldn't imagine me becoming unreasonable about a car repair.
21:49 DaemonFC; I have better things to do than come back to Pep Boys every day while they throw parts at my car due to managerial corruption and incompetence."
21:50 DaemonFC; schestowitz-pi2, When you completely remove the skill from a job and tell people to just do things until the computer shows "green".

21:52 DaemonFC; And then when that unskilled labor that they pay minimum wage to work on your car gets in over their head they just say fuck it and hand you the car back with a bill.

21:54 DaemonFC; We'll cut into your car, billing you all the way, compromising hull integrity. Don't worry, we'll bill you a labor hour for this too.

22:07 Moocher5254; I just see useful idiots' behaviour, I doubt he's all in in the whole MS charade/plans
22:09 DaemonFC; "Yesterday, I wrote about an incident at the Waukegan Pep Boys where I went in for a car alignment after getting new struts at a Car-X. I planned to get my alignment done at Car-X because they're as good as any mechanics out there, charge a fair price (compared with other shops), usually get the job done right (other shops have a worse average in my opinion between successful repairs and botched jobs), and doesn't recommend "services" that I
22:09 DaemonFC; don't need.
22:09 DaemonFC; Even when the Round Lake Pep Boys was able to fix my vehicle alignment, which Waukegan Pep Boys had fucked up beyond all recognition (FUBAR), the print out recommended a transmission fluid change (I had one 10,000 miles ago) and a coolant change (had one last week).
22:09 DaemonFC; When I called back and spoke to the guy, I first thanked him for finally getting my car to drive straight and be aligned with the requested values, then proceeded to ask why these were recommended since the coolant was as clean as it's going to be and the transmission fluid is mostly new (you never get it ALL out without a flush machine, which are not recommended unless you have a severely neglected transmission with brown fluid and need it all
22:09 DaemonFC; out 3 years ago).
22:09 DaemonFC; He told me it's just something the computer recommends when it reads the odometer.
22:09 DaemonFC; I said, "Well, I mean, I don't need it because I know how to maintain a car and even then I err on the side of throwing the manual over my shoulder because the car company has a different idea of maintaining property than I do."
22:09 DaemonFC; Crooked shops looking for extra work recommend servicing these systems more often than necessary or without asking the customer when it was done, or pulling up the Carfax report which most shops report to and only telling the customer what they actually need, because they profit greatly on these "services". And then sometimes they don't even do the service after you pay them.
22:09 DaemonFC; Even a wheel alignment, which is very easy to get a rough estimate of whether it went wrong, by seeing if your car steers forwards with the steering wheel at a roughly neutral position, they screw the customer, at least at their Waukegan store.
22:09 DaemonFC; Why does the Waukegan Pep Boys screw the customer? Most of the time you'll get away with it because the customer won't know they got screwed real bad. Many times, the alignment wasn't way out of whack in the first place unless they just hit the curb real hard or the mother of all potholes or had some structural suspension parts removed and replaced where the mechanic "marked it" so you could drive around a bit and get to an alignment shop.
22:10 DaemonFC; So if you make your business out of recommending unnecessary services that are usually hard to even verify were completed, you can really rip people off. And then on top of that, if they come back to complain and demand that it be performed correctly, you've hired idiots back there that will only make it worse if they touch it, either because they have absolutely no idea what they are doing or because they want to give the customer a send off
22:10 DaemonFC; with a middle finger for daring to come back and complain.
22:10 DaemonFC; This is how the Pep Boys store in Waukegan rolls."
22:10 DaemonFC; Part of a post I'm writing. Because I'm so mad with the way they run that store.
22:11 DaemonFC; No, better. "This is how "Mike and the Mechanics" at the Pep Boys store in Waukegan roll."
22:13 DaemonFC; Carl Icahn is a really nasty character, and he owns Pep Boys now. Every year since he bought it, their "service" has gotten worse.
22:13 DaemonFC; This is the guy that bailed out Donald Trump's casino business then sold it at 4 cents on the dollar a year later to curry favor with a president that now faces nearly 100 criminal felony charges in multiple jurisdictions.
22:17 DaemonFC; So it stands to reason that when a guy like that buys an auto service chain, they'll start hiring people for low wages and telling them to rip people off.
22:17 DaemonFC; Case in point, the Waukegan store currently has an opening for a full time Tire and Lube guy. This is tires, air filters, and oil changes, and general labor cleaning the shop.
22:17 DaemonFC; The pay is listed on Indeed as $620 per week, gross, that is before any taxes or withholding. If you average this out as a 40 hour week, that's only $15.50 an hour.
22:17 DaemonFC; A wage that is so low that it's less money than my spouse makes at Walmart even with his hours cut for a while to 34 per week (and we're working on this problem), and his job isn't even one where you will be exposed to hazardous carcinogens and hot muggy shops and lift heavy things a lot and have to road test cars that may be unsafe to operate due to the owner "delaying maintenance". That's the new term in America for being broke.
22:17 DaemonFC; Like "delaying healthcare". It sounds better than dying while insulin is $1,000 a month while they use the money to fund TV ads with fat people doing the happy insulin dance.

22:23 DaemonFC; But the car alignment racks that these shops use (which may not even be functional, like the Waukegan store), are an attack on skilled labor.
22:23 DaemonFC; First, you completely remove the skill from a job and then tell people to just do things until the computer shows "green". As long as it's green it's fine. It doesn't matter what the end values are. Even then, sometimes they admit it's not in range and hand the car back. Like the Waukegan Pep Boys did to me, right as they closed the store on Friday.
22:23 DaemonFC; Got a negative camber of 2 on the rear left an a negative camber of 1.45 on the right? No problem.
22:23 DaemonFC; Actually it is a problem. You want values for alignments to be roughly the same on both axles and both sides of an axle or the car will start doing weird things.
22:24 DaemonFC; A variance of half a degree camber should be investigated and they should figure out why before they hand it back, especially since GM says those wheel should not be at more than negative 1.6. If they hand it back with -1.3 on the left and -1.4 on the right, that would have even been drivable and within an acceptable margin, but no. They have to be a corrupt, greedy, sloppy, shop that doesn't even do the work, and then admits it to your face

22:34 DaemonFC; "Mike who used to work at a GM dealer (he told me that) says cutting into the vehicle to make it fit and voiding part warranties from other stores is fine. He did it at GM, allegedly, according to Mike, which no longer works at GM.
22:34 DaemonFC; He works at Pep Boys. One can only speculate as to why the career at GM ended.
22:34 DaemonFC; Anyway, amusingly, the "initial values" over at the Round Lake store on the alignment report didn't match anything close to what the "final values" did from one day prior at Waukegan.
22:34 DaemonFC; So since Round Lake got my car to drive right, I'm going to say that they have a working alignment rack and someone that at least knows how to make adjustments and measure them.
22:34 DaemonFC; It makes sense to Carl Icahn to pay people minimum wage to work on your car and make you pay 10 times minimum wage for them to make it worse. It's not Carl Icahn's car. It's yours."

22:56 DaemonFC; They have those really flimsy sidewalls that blow out if you hit anything.
22:57 DaemonFC; Real nice for a city with potholes that throws something metal over the potholes with metal things sticking out of the metal slab.
