00:02 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, I keep getting spam from an "opencare" about booking a dentist and getting a gift card.
00:03 DaemonFC; Of course, when I went to see which dentists let you book through them, I noticed most were in Chicago and had like aromatherapy and shit going on, so you know what a cleaning must cost there.
00:03 DaemonFC; I don't know who decided to have a day spa in the middle of a dentist's office.
00:03 DaemonFC; In case it wasn't expensive enough to go to a dentist maybe?
00:04 DaemonFC; I noticed a lot of dentists have just stopped taking ANY dental insurance.
00:04 DaemonFC; And they charge really high prices.
00:05 DaemonFC; I had Dr. Goone (my dentist) quote me on Mandy. Since he didn't accept the Blue Cross PPO plan (or any insurance), he said it would cost about $8,700 to take Mandy to see him, and he recommended finding an in-network dentist instead.
00:05 DaemonFC; It's still going to cost about $3,500-$4,000, but that beats the hell out of $8,700.
00:06 DaemonFC; There's nothing really wrong with my teeth and it doesn't look like there will be for a while, so getting dental insurance for myself would basically just mean flushing $600 a year down the toilet.
00:07 DaemonFC; The last cavity I had was 15 years ago. Actually, 15 years and a month.
00:07 DaemonFC; I get my cleanings at a dental school that charges $15.

00:09 DaemonFC; That's about the only benefit I'd have gotten had I paid dental premiums for 15 years and a month. So assuming that it costs about $50 a month to get a decent plan, then that's like $9050 in wasted premiums over that time period to get pretty much no benefits.
00:10 DaemonFC; It's a better investment to just go to the dental clinic and use an Oral B electric toothbrush that basically removes all of the plaque.
00:10 DaemonFC; The manual toothbrushes almost never remove that much plaque. Some of them can do an okay job.

00:11 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, They changed the handle so they could introduce new brush heads that are not compatible.
00:12 DaemonFC; I bought about 5 years of heads because my last Oral B lasted about 7 years I think. You don't want to get caught not being able to get replacement parts, but you don't want to hoard and have leftovers that don't work with the next product you'll have to buy.
00:13 DaemonFC; "Most of Oral-B's other current toothbrushes are more or less the same on the inside. With the iO, though, they have completely revolutionized how the toothbrush works."
00:13 DaemonFC; Yeah, I'm sure there have been exciting new advancements in the field.

00:41 DaemonFC; The dental school dyes my teeth with it and then when I look in the mirror, there's no plaque on them.

00:44 DaemonFC; schestowitz, ^
00:45 DaemonFC; Just toss the old one in the trash. This one has patents!
00:46 DaemonFC; They've also doubled the price of the heads!
00:46 DaemonFC; Doubling the price of the toothbrush and the heads makes your teeth extra clean, because the patents only go so far.
00:46 DaemonFC; MinceR, I'd probably change to the Amazon Solimo toothbrush myself.
00:47 DaemonFC; They use Amazon's older style Oral B compatible heads.
00:47 DaemonFC; Literally the only reason the IO exists is they took out more patents and doubled the price.

00:47 DaemonFC; Actually, the base model of the old style oral B handle and starter kit was only $45.
00:48 DaemonFC; The main difference was I think the 1000 doesn't have a pressure sensor, multiple brushing modes, and Bluetooth.
00:48 DaemonFC; Other than that, it's exactly the same as the more expensive ones.
00:48 MinceR; 18 014007 < DaemonFC> The Terminator brush.
00:49 MinceR; once the human is dead, it can't get its teeth filthy again.
00:49 DaemonFC; The main thing I like about my 6000 series, which I got from Amazon Warehouse for $70, is that it has some more aggressive brushing modes and the pressure sensor.
00:50 DaemonFC; MinceR, The 6000 series is machine phase matter and can turn humans into other Terminators. The 1000 series is just your basic mimetic polyalloy. Weeeeeeak!!!!
00:50 DaemonFC; I would make sense that Skynet (Matt Smith) would install itself into the most advanced and dangerous model it had ever conceived of.
00:51 DaemonFC; In a war you have weapons, and you have small weapons, medium sized weapons, and big ones. You make relatively few of the big ones, normally.

00:52 TR Bot; invidious.weblibre.org | Aperture Science Material Emancipation Grid - Invidious
00:52 DaemonFC; So the cost of having some 1000 series models get away from you is worse than having an 800 or 600 series go rogue.
00:53 DaemonFC; In the Salvation timeline, Skynet was still even using the T-1s with some improvements.
00:53 DaemonFC; The less advanced they are, they less dangerous they are to Skynet. As long as they can patrol an area and kill humans, for the most part it doesn't matter.
00:53 DaemonFC; They're not an infiltrator model, they don't have to blend in.
00:55 DaemonFC; MinceR, I don't know how a toothbrush needs an app to tell you you're missing some of your teeth with the toothbrush.
00:55 DaemonFC; If you brush in quadrants, it's pretty easy to keep track of where you've been and what's next.
00:55 MinceR; it's cheaper to run their code on your phone than to put enough hardware in the toothbrush to run it
00:56 DaemonFC; Yeah, and they can pass the savings along with a $250 handle that needs a $10 brush every few months.
00:56 DaemonFC; :)
00:57 DaemonFC; They might as well make the handle a smartphone for what they charge you.
00:57 DaemonFC; As far as you're concerned.

07:23 schestowitz_TR2; then there was also theme park (sim)

07:23 matey; this one you aim a pressure washer at a house
07:23 schestowitz_TR2; now there are many for hospitals, parenting etc.
07:23 matey; and clean it
07:23 matey; the guy on youtube
07:23 matey; you know how people write "wash me" and other things on dirty cars
07:23 schestowitz_TR2; clean the guy on youtube
07:23 matey; he did a dick on the top of a house
07:24 schestowitz_TR2; with a pressure washer
07:24 matey; then he knocked a lawn gnome over
07:24 matey; but i mean
07:24 schestowitz_TR2; pressure washer vandalism isn't novel
07:24 schestowitz_TR2; like drawing obscene things
07:25 schestowitz_TR2; by "cleaning"
07:25 matey; well its certainly harmles
07:25 matey; dirty cleaning!
07:25 schestowitz_TR2; not really
07:25 schestowitz_TR2; they say it is cleaning
07:25 matey; who does it harm?
07:25 schestowitz_TR2; but selectively
07:25 schestowitz_TR2; I saw some things like this online a decade ago
07:25 matey; im still talking about the simulation
07:25 matey; i dont even kwow if this is multiplayer
07:25 matey; i think its like an app
07:26 schestowitz_TR2; a lot of 'art' defaces public spaces
07:26 matey; simulation
07:26 schestowitz_TR2; ah, OK
07:26 schestowitz_TR2; yoiu said guy on youtube
07:26 matey; thats whats funny about it
07:26 matey; someone made a "pressure washer" app/"game"
07:26 schestowitz_TR2; so I assume someone had a channel when he goes around doing obscene things for "likes"
07:26 matey; i dunno, it could be a one-off
07:27 schestowitz_TR2; it's dumb to make a game about it
07:27 matey; its certainly odd
07:27 schestowitz_TR2; games are for fantasyyyyyyyyyyyy
07:27 matey; i mean no reason you shouldnt but

07:28 matey; lots of games have pointless grinding
07:28 schestowitz_TR2; probably m"apps" not a game
07:28 matey; but this is sort of a comical version of that
07:28 schestowitz_TR2; "apps" are a whole new category of BS
07:28 schestowitz_TR2; like an "app" that just displays steps
07:29 schestowitz_TR2; or an "app" that just calculates something

07:29 matey; i did know that
07:30 matey; my favourite "app" just stuffs hundreds of pages into a single page of html
07:30 matey; then lets you "navigate" it
07:30 schestowitz_TR2; common issue: compat
07:30 schestowitz_TR2; with software, things stop working faster
07:30 schestowitz_TR2; than with computers in gheneral
07:30 matey; well if its done in vanilla js
07:31 schestowitz_TR2; with apps it's even worse
07:31 matey; crapps
07:31 schestowitz_TR2; as they release a new version of android and ios every year
07:31 schestowitz_TR2; anbd then deprecate a bunch of stuff
07:31 matey; android is pretty much dead to me
07:31 schestowitz_TR2; then they call installing stuff "sideloading"
07:31 matey; heres what happens every time i get an android device
07:31 matey; 1. its used / cheaper
07:31 matey; 2. i root it and remove all the shit
07:31 schestowitz_TR2; so as to encourae people to ONLY install what Pentagon contractors have approved
07:32 matey; 3. i put my favourite stuff from fdroid on it
07:32 matey; 4. i dont use any of it except the better keyboard and do everything with the browser (cgi-bin, server on network, js stuff like that)
07:32 schestowitz_TR2; btw, weatehr apps and typically malware
07:32 matey; 5. i get bored then i dont do anything on android for 2 more years
07:32 schestowitz_TR2; not many people talk about it
07:32 schestowitz_TR2; they spy
07:33 matey; well yeah
07:33 matey; so basically ill get an android device
07:33 matey; use it for a week or two
07:33 matey; then nothing on android for 2 more years
07:33 matey; worthless
07:33 matey; and no matter what i install i only use the browser anyway
07:33 matey; worthless
07:33 matey; i dont even like touchscreens
07:33 schestowitz_TR2; there is one upside
07:33 schestowitz_TR2; not for me
07:34 schestowitz_TR2; lots of productivity sank
07:34 schestowitz_TR2; people I know sit on the toilet "working"

07:35 matey; theyre annoying
07:35 schestowitz_TR2; I first used one int eh 90s
07:35 matey; they have their place i guess
07:35 schestowitz_TR2; back then the touchscreens were worse
07:35 matey; but id rather not use them

07:40 schestowitz_TR2; Touchscreen are f*ing awful
07:40 schestowitz_TR2; for most things
07:40 matey; Extended use of gestural interfaces without the ability of the user to rest their arm is referred to as "gorilla arm".[92] It can result in fatigue, and even repetitive stress injury when routinely used in a work setting. Certain early pen-based interfaces required the operator to work in this position for much of the workday.[93] Allowing the user to rest their hand or arm on the input device or a frame around it is a solution for this in many contexts
07:40 schestowitz_TR2; for phones too

08:01 schestowitz_TR2; then you become more productive (per time unit)
08:01 schestowitz_TR2; so then we want you working for us 40 or more hours a week
08:01 schestowitz_TR2; for them, two people working 20 hours each is "worse"
08:01 schestowitz_TR2; because each is considered "less able"
08:01 schestowitz_TR2; even if there are unique skills
08:01 schestowitz_TR2; they don't view it that way

For example, if you have an illness that requires a major operation in Britain, you are likely to end up on a long waiting list. 11:22 matey; Regulation of bankruptcy was a necessary part of every legal system, and is found in the Hammurabi Code (18th century BC), the Twelve Tables of the Roman Republic (450 BC), the Talmud (200 AD), and the Corpus Juris Civilis (534 AD).
11:22 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, They have this thing in US hospitals called the "chargemaster" which is a list of what they charge for everything they can do there. And it's basically the "big book of fake prices 'n shit". Then the insurance companies negotiate "fake discounts". Because the "chargemaster" has these ludicrous fake prices that they know the insurance companies are going to demand to "adjust" down by a factor of 5 or 6.

11:24 matey; i guess they had a lot of corporations back then
11:24 DaemonFC; You pay insurance to protect you from the "big book of fake prices 'n shit" which are actually what the hospital will sue you for and try to take if you have no insurance.
11:25 matey; Company bankruptcy is a term commonly used when referring to company liquidation. In the UK, the term bankruptcy is only applicable to individuals, including sole traders and members of partnerships. For a limited company, a process known as liquidation would be the equivalent of company bankruptcy.
11:25 DaemonFC; Even though the hospital is perfectly happy to take an $80,000 appendectomy visit and adjust it down to like $9,000 for the insurance companies, they will NOT do that for you.
11:25 DaemonFC; You can tell them "I can't pay that. I won't pay that. Try again!". And they may offer to set up payment arrangements on $40,000 or something and force you into slavery to pay down your medical bills.
11:26 DaemonFC; Eventually so many things happen to you over the years that everyone files bankruptcy eventually.
11:26 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, ^
11:26 DaemonFC; So that's how it works.
11:26 matey; www.theguardian.com/business/2011/feb/18/ireland-property-crash-bankruptcy-tourism 2011-02-18
11:26 matey; Declaring himself bankrupt in Ireland is not a realistic option: bankrupts must wait 12 years before they are discharged from their debts. But under European Union law he can file for bankruptcy
11:26 DaemonFC; matey, That's more like a US Chapter 13 case, I guess.
11:27 matey; Creditors of Westlife singer Shane Filan, who was declared bankrupt in Britain in June after being unable to repay 18 million worth of debts built up in property developments in Leitrim and ...
11:27 DaemonFC; If you make too much money to file a straight bankruptcy here, or have non-exempt property that you want to keep, you have to file a non-liquidation bankruptcy.
11:28 DaemonFC; The court puts all your debt into one "pot" and adjusts the interest rate on it to one that's way lower. Like, you know, your credit cards, car loan, etc., can all go into a pot where you pay 5% or something.
11:28 DaemonFC; Then you have to make a monthly payment to the trustee which amounts to whatever the court decides your "disposable" income is.
11:29 DaemonFC; After 5 years, the payments stop and whatever debts remain go away.
11:30 DaemonFC; MARISOL got them in so much trouble that there's no way to file a straight bankruptcy because they make too much, they want to cling to "their stuff" instead of letting a trustee dispose of it, and they'd have to pay back almost all of their debt and trash their credit on a Chapter 13 plan if they tried to use the courts for relief.
11:32 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, I've come to the conclusion that GM simply makes their cars to rust.
11:33 DaemonFC; Why else would you put metal fenders and wheel wells in there without some sort of plastic guard to eliminate stone chips?
11:33 DaemonFC; I mean, this is a very easy problem to eliminate. You just put plastic trim over it to guard against pebbles and stuff that the tires kick up off the road.
11:34 DaemonFC; Because if they hit the paint and damage it, you can get rust several years later from just one little nick.

12:19 DaemonFC; One of the ways Trump/Republicans try to keep out immigrants is to accuse them of being diseased with COVID-19, which I always thought was an interesting argument, to say the least.
12:19 DaemonFC; Most Republicans are so afraid of COVID-19 that they refuse to wear a face mask, dont see any need to get vaccinated, and sue to have super-spreader events while comparing it to the cold and flu season, but then it becomes the Bubonic Plague or Ebola when it comes to why we have to keep immigrants out.

12:27 DaemonFC; NFTs are sort of like a religion, like fakecoins are. You have people paying real money for a product that they aren't allowed to see, which probably doesn't even exist, and which gets inflated in value some more each time it's retold to make the story more compelling.
12:27 DaemonFC; Religion is basically getting people to pay for a product they can't see or complain about until they're dead and can't warn anyone else "Boy was I a sucker!".
12:27 DaemonFC; Anyway, there's some more BillSEZ this morning on NFTs.
12:28 DaemonFC; They want you putting money in the plate every week, more often actually. They pass it around on Wednesdays too!
12:28 DaemonFC; The people who get religious are old because they start psychologically discounting their remaining days like the people around them do.
12:29 DaemonFC; My grandparents were at church at least three times a week for as long as I can remember. More if they had a get together for dinner or something.

12:31 DaemonFC; It's a social group. I mean, there's nothing wrong with associating with people who reject being "worldly", in and of itself, but it morphs into beliefs in the supernatural and two minutes hate against the nasty gay men and all sorts of other foul thing.
12:31 DaemonFC; *things
12:32 DaemonFC; In the sense that most Christians use the term "worldly", it's a catch-all for everything wrong with the world. Basically, that people have turned into slobs that get trashy tattoos and body piercings and go around spreading STDs and getting each other knocked up, and drugs.
12:32 DaemonFC; And there's nothing wrong with wanting to stand up to all of that and say it's not acceptable, because it's not acceptable.
12:33 DaemonFC; "Social Media" has become another vent for everyone letting their freak flag fly
12:33 DaemonFC; And if the Internet needed something else, you know, it's another way for degenerates to show off and to get hookedo n pornography.

12:37 DaemonFC; I think in some ways I benefited from going to a private Christian school. For starters, nobody learns anything in public school anyway.
12:37 DaemonFC; Here's the kind of people I get to deal with.
12:37 DaemonFC; You call Walmart Grocery Pickup and say "I'm in a silver Buick in parking space number 4.".
12:37 DaemonFC; And they make you repeat everything back to then like 4 times before they understand that.
12:38 DaemonFC; I called the CTA to ask about getting my mother a Senior Reduced Fare Pass, and said she lived in Indiana.
12:41 DaemonFC; The woman goes, "Oh, so is that outside of Illinois?". I couldn't help myself. I said, "Well, it has been ever since Congress split it off from the Indiana territory in 1806. Things were hard in those days, but eventually the issue of slavery was settled and neighborhoods started to be electrified about 90 years later.".

12:50 DaemonFC; I never got the whole warehouse club thing.
12:50 DaemonFC; After you buy a $45 a year membership, they don't generally save you enough money to recoup that.
12:52 DaemonFC; They have cheap gas, but not cheaper than BP, Shell, or Speedway with Upside and my credit card.

13:01 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, I was looking at low rolling resistance tires as a possibility. They don't seem to save enough money to be worth the cost, and I have nearly full tread on the tires on the car right now.
13:01 DaemonFC; I think expensive tires are a big gamble. Cheap ones, not really.
13:01 DaemonFC; 20 years ago it was a different story.
13:02 DaemonFC; The expensive ones meant quality. They were all made in the United States, they had the best materials. If you got a cheap set that were made in China you knew you'd hate them but the price was like maybe $40 per tire.
13:03 DaemonFC; Now you pay for the brand and get $800 after tax and installation and you still might not like them.
13:03 DaemonFC; You get the brand and they're all made in some sweatshop.
13:10 DaemonFC; When I replace tires just depends on how much tread is left and what season we're heading into.
13:11 DaemonFC; If we're about to go into winter and they have 4/32, I might replace them, but if we're heading into Spring or Summer, I'll go ahead and run them down a few more months and toss them them.
13:11 DaemonFC; *then
13:11 DaemonFC; If you can beat them up for another couple thousand miles before you absolutely have to toss them, you'll get your money's worth.
13:12 DaemonFC; I think one reason people get a Sam's membership is the car tires.
13:12 DaemonFC; If I needed a set, I'd definitely get the $8 membership just for the tire prices, and then cancel it before it renewed next year.

21:41 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR, I'm writing another blog post. I touch on European cars.
21:41 DaemonFC; "Nobody I've ever known who has had a VW says they'd ever own another one, and that includes my mom, who had the engine on a new VW Rabbit blow up and strand her in Illinois in 1983, when the thing only had 40,000 miles on it and had been taken care of, and an ex that I dated for about a year in 2013 who couldn't afford to keep his 2009 Jetta on the road because the reliability took a dump when the car was only about 4 years old and it was
21:41 DaemonFC; constantly at the mechanics and they never could make the stupid thing work right, and there was a car payment as well."
21:41 DaemonFC; "It's no secret that I've always bought and driven late model American cars. They get lousy gas mileage, but they're pretty cheap (relatively speaking) to fix because well up until 2010-ish, they weren't grossly over-designed with finicky modern technology that might save a little gas but wouldn't get you very far. And for some reason, despite the fact that European cars are notoriously unreliable and require oddball knowledge and proprietary
21:41 DaemonFC; parts to fix when they constantly break down, they sell for a ridiculous amount of money even as the owner is desperate to hide thousands of dollars of repairs and get out from under it."
21:43 DaemonFC; You can absolutely do 10,000 mile oil change intervals with a Buick V6. You need to use a good quality full synthetic oil, and check the level and top off if needed, but the myth that only European cars can have long oil change intervals is....a myth. You can go longer than 10,000 miles if you use Euro Synthetic oil in this engine and a really big oil filter with plenty of filtration media.
21:43 DaemonFC; It won't hurt a thing and none of them are in warranty anymore anyway, so it's not like you have to take it in and have them scrutinize what you've been doing like stupid robots looking for a reason to deny your warranty coverage.
21:45 DaemonFC; Many people don't bother to do extremely long OCIs with these cars because they don't make sense anyway anymore.
21:45 DaemonFC; It costs $13 per quart for the oil I use, and the Euro stuff usually ranges between $16.99 and $18.99 per quart.
21:46 TR News; What is AlmaLinux - Key Information and Overview https://bytexd.com/what-is-almalinux/ Source: bytexd
21:46 TR Bot; What is AlmaLinux - Key Information and Overview
21:46 DaemonFC; That's one of the reasons why doing a proper oil change that won't sludge up a Euro car is like $150, when you can get a "full synthetic" oil change on an American car at a shop for like $50-60.
21:47 DaemonFC; The Euro stuff adds about $6 per quart at retail, and they have to put like 7 or 8 quarts in a BMW because they leak and burn so much oil that you have to just figure the owner is a retard and won't check it and you put in like 2-3 extra quarts to sacrifice between oil changes so they won't need to top off.
21:48 DaemonFC; You only have to put 4.5 quarts in a Buick 3.8 V6, and most of them don't consume outrageous amounts of oil. They can develop a gasket leak, but you should fix that, not pour oil into it every week or two.
21:49 DaemonFC; Unless it's a very costly gasket leak to fix. Some of them had a slight leak from the exhaust manifold gasket, and that's like an $850 job because it's such a pain to get at, which is an unusual exception.
21:49 DaemonFC; Most of them never leak very much, so the economics favor adding a little oil now and then.
21:51 DaemonFC; The Buick I have was built after GM "improved" the valve cover gaskets on the Impala that were known to leak, so they already had improved gaskets all around from the factory, and many of them simply don't leak like that anymore.
21:51 DaemonFC; I was looking around, and they call it the same engine, but it's really not.
21:51 DaemonFC; They use metal where the Impala had cheap rubber and plastic.
21:52 DaemonFC; It's pretty clear that with the Impala they were trying to hit a price point.
21:52 DaemonFC; When you have to cut $13,000 off the MSRP, something's getting sacrificed.
21:53 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR, It's clear that what they make now is absolute garbage. It is not equal to or better than what it's replacing.
21:53 DaemonFC; But they notice their customers buy it anyway, so no incentive to improve.
21:53 DaemonFC; If anything, they can all collude to go to the shitter together so you have nowhere to turn to.
21:54 DaemonFC; Then a slightly rusty fender 15 years in is going to be the least of your worries.
21:54 DaemonFC; I look around town and people driving stuff a lot newer than my Buick have severe rust problems.
21:54 DaemonFC; Get an $800 car payment and $200 insurance they said. It'll be fun they said!
21:54 DaemonFC; No money left to wash it, so they just let it take a salt bath and don't ever go through the car wash.
21:55 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR, This is what drives idiots into the poorhouse.
21:56 DaemonFC; They buy a brand new car, pay way too much, and then watch it depreciate. And in general, three years later it's not even worth 40% of what they paid for it. What's going on lately is an aberration, and so people take advantage of it to unload crap at high prices that they don't want to deal with.

22:40 DaemonFC; The dedicated hardware media players are dead and gone, and the expansion of phone storage is heading that way too, to pressure people into the clown.
22:40 DaemonFC; So you have to make the files a lot smaller than where MP3 sounds good, and to do that you really need to go back to original rips (lossless) and make 128k Opus files out of them.
22:40 DaemonFC; You can save something like half the space without compromising anything, vs. ripping to MP3.
22:41 DaemonFC; MP3s on an Android phone were really very little trouble with the cheap cheap price of SD card storage.
22:41 DaemonFC; But they're cutting corners on the phones now and if you want to store any sizable collection of portable music, you need Opus.

22:42 MinceR; 18 232916 < DaemonFC> MinceR, It was the T-5000 that could infect humans and transform them into machines.
22:42 MinceR; so could the Techno-Organic Virus
22:43 DaemonFC; I'm not a programmer, but I can take a look at the MP3 specification documents at a high level and tell you how counterproductive most of it is.
22:43 DaemonFC; It's completely over-designed, and not in a good way.
22:44 DaemonFC; Most people wouldn't ever look at the specifications. They'd just say "Oh yeah, of course you need to use the highest VBR setting or it'll sound really really bad!".
22:44 DaemonFC; So a lot of times the file is more than double the size it needs to be in Opus to sound as good.
22:44 DaemonFC; It's a total mess.
22:45 DaemonFC; And you can take any codec and dial up the bitrate until it sounds or looks good, if you are okay with using a lot of storage.
22:46 DaemonFC; If you give MPEG-4 AVC 4 GB to encode a Blu Ray rip it will look as good as a 2 GB HEVC or AV1 version, but the problem is you've just halved the number of files you can store.
22:47 DaemonFC; There's always going to be value in more efficient compressions, and unfortunately a lot of that reasoning is that manufacturers can cut 25 cents off the price to make an Android phone AND Google wants you to subscribe to things.
22:47 DaemonFC; With the crashing price of flash storage, we should be talking about phones that fit in your pocket and have a terabyte on them.
22:47 DaemonFC; But things are backsliding terribly.
22:49 DaemonFC; When Apple went from hard drive iPods to flash storage iPods I was livid, right?
22:49 DaemonFC; All of a sudden you went from being able to store a virtually unlimited number of MP3s. Like hundreds of thousands, potentially, to like maybe 4,000-5,000?
22:50 DaemonFC; And that didn't even cover a quarter of the number that I really wanted on there.
22:50 DaemonFC; And then here we are 15 years later and the iPhone has as much storage as those shitty 2007 iPods.
22:51 DaemonFC; They're just not very practical, and people ask why I don't have one. It doesn't work with any of the things I use and you more or less have to give up and pay more money to make it do anything, and you never get to stop.
22:52 DaemonFC; I don't even like the idea of a vacuum cleaner that makes me go out and buy bags.
22:52 DaemonFC; Do you really think I'm going to pay $14.99 a month to listen to music or $100 a month to stream things that will be on DVD at the library in like 2 months?
22:52 DaemonFC; Fuck no.
22:53 DaemonFC; They can take those ~$1200-1400 a year subscriptions and cram it up their ass.
22:53 DaemonFC; My money doesn't grow on trees and it gets used to buy actual things.

23:05 MinceR; why would you even care about hypePods?
23:05 MinceR; pretty much every other PMP was superior
23:05 MinceR; and hypePods weren't even the first to market
23:06 *fuzzy has quit (Quit: connection closed.)
23:06 schestowitz_TR; feshen!
23:07 MinceR; :>
23:08 schestowitz_TR; it is true though
23:08 schestowitz_TR; in my experience
23:08 schestowitz_TR; around 2003 the people who wanted these were after the brand/design
23:08 schestowitz_TR; not the features
23:08 DaemonFC; <MinceR> pretty much every other PMP was superior
23:09 DaemonFC; I got one free and just decided to make the best of it.
23:09 DaemonFC; It played MP3s and there was a reversed engineered library to talk to it from Rhythmbox.
23:10 DaemonFC; If you connected it to iTunes, Apple kept flash updating it without asking and then libimobiledevice had to figure it out and you had to wait a while before it worked again, but I never connected it to iTunes, so that didn't affect me.
23:10 DaemonFC; Back then you actually had to make some mistake like that to open up a backdoor into your hardware. The iPod didn't have an Internet connection of its own, so for Apple to go digging around fucking it up for you, you had to connect it to iTunes.
23:11 DaemonFC; So assuming you didn't, the fact that it ran on proprietary software didn't really matter.
23:11 MinceR; its format support was still lacking
23:11 MinceR; and it still needed some software running on a PC to hold its hand so you could feed it files
23:11 DaemonFC; It's like Richard Stallman talking about whether the program inside your coffee maker that changes the brew settings between mild and bold isn't important because nobody updates it. It isn't connected to anything. So it can't hurt you.
23:12 DaemonFC; It's no different, in function, than a physical switch that you turn one way or the other at this point.
23:12 MinceR; even a coffee maker can be poorly designed
23:12 DaemonFC; Well, the Keurig 2.0 could hurt you.
23:12 DaemonFC; It was designed to refuse non-Keurig pods to keep prices high even after their patent expired.
23:12 MinceR; but i prefer simpler coffee brewing methods to espresso anyway
23:12 DaemonFC; It looked for trademarked logos on the lid nobody else could use.
23:13 DaemonFC; So there was this thing called "Freedom Clip" that you could buy that you shoved into the thing and you'd basically just remove the lid from one Keurig pod and stick it into the clip and put that into the coffee machine, and it wouldn't refuse to brew your coffee anymore.

23:14 DaemonFC; And the beauty of this is that they were just selling you a piece of plastic. So there was no infringement case to be had on the people that made the thing.
23:14 DaemonFC; It was up to the user to take a lid off a Keurig pod and stick it in there.
23:15 DaemonFC; But the K 2.0 did poorly once people paid like over $200 for the stupid thing and it wouldn't brew their coffee and they went "What the fuck is this? I spent $200 on this goddamned thing?" and word spread, and sales crashed.
23:15 DaemonFC; And that's exactly what should happen to Apple and Microsoft, but they've established that people expect artificial malfunctions in their computer that only serve to make the company an endless stream of money.
23:16 DaemonFC; When a coffee maker did it, it was new for coffee makers and so people didn't accept it.
23:23 DaemonFC; Here's part of this next post:
23:23 DaemonFC; "The smartest person who ever lived was not Albert Einstein. Einstein figured out laws of physics and theoretical physics that are still in place and widely accepted today, and that's brilliant, but the smartest person to ever live was the person who convinced Americans to get rid of public transit and buy oil, gas, car payments, and trips to the muffler shop."
23:24 DaemonFC; "In so doing, turning a bunch of backwards barbarian thugs like the Russians and Saudis into people who can hold our entire economy hostage."
23:26 DaemonFC; "The problem of what to do about transportation costs isn't going away, and neither is oil and gasoline. Electric Vehicles may take some market share, but right now there's hardly a place to charge them, and it's another Robin Hood in Reverse, because rich people plugging them in take advantage of the tax breaks and low electric rates that poorer people have to foot the bill for."
23:29 DaemonFC; "When the dust settles, I also don't believe that Tesla will be around selling and servicing them, because it was losing money and propped up by dwindling tax incentives and CAFE credits that real car companies are sick of paying, and realizing that they can convert their luxury brands over to electric and offset their gasoline markets, and quit paying Elon Musk. "
23:29 DaemonFC; (The famous "free speech absolutist" who says he wants Twitter so everyone can speak freely, yet who initiated a Stalinist Purge of SpaceX just this morning because of a letter signed by several hundred employees that criticized him.)
