01:33 matey; there really isnt enough science (or scientific attitude) in the free software movement
01:33 matey; you dont need to throw ethics away to have science. you can start with the 4 freedoms as a requirement, for example
01:33 matey; i think its clear enough that if you dont have the 4 freedoms its not free software
01:34 MinceR; "upon blind faith they place reliance / what we need more of science!"
01:34 MinceR; oops
01:34 MinceR; "upon blind faith they place reliance / what we need more of is science!"
01:35 matey; "if i had a million dollars, if i had a million dollars, i would buy you a k-car / a nice reliant automobile!"
01:36 matey; but i mean, the copyleft / permissive thing is based on theory, and the theory should be something we could test and settle once and for all
01:36 matey; this is just the most obvious example (to me) there are other examples where science could help free software
01:37 matey; ive heard plenty of theories, and theyre worth considering
01:37 matey; we also have a lot more data than we did in 1997
01:38 matey; but it would be nice to have a clearer understanding of the actual effects of gpl vs 3-clause bsd for example
01:39 matey; because calling it a "pushover" license not only glosses over the intentions of some projects using it (which isnt really about what the phrase "pushover license" implies)
01:39 matey; you might get more people writing a project LIKE GNU under a permissive license
01:40 matey; i hate this lack of science on both sides of the argument-- its ASSUMED that people contribute more under a permissive license
01:40 matey; id like to see this settled with facts and a broad and detailed assessment
01:40 matey; which is either a job that would take a year or more, or a job that would take a dozen or more people

01:44 matey; all my research builds several themes together, so any findings i come up with are going to be along several different axes
01:44 matey; for example, my data will be useless to anyone who wants to see whether any of this applies to github, since im interested almost exclusively in things that ARENT on github
01:45 matey; if its on github, youve already fucked up
01:45 matey; solution: move from github

01:48 matey; on the other, theres "hope" about making it so anyone can defend it...
01:49 matey; sounds a like a good thing!
01:49 matey; but wait, copyright trolls are a thing
01:49 matey; what if microsoft can defend gpl code it didnt write?
01:49 matey; and forbid you from using it...
01:50 matey; oh, youve been pretty good about including source code, but copyright is nasty, maybe theres some problem with something and
01:50 matey; ah, now a lawsuit

01:50 matey; if it werent for nasty little shits like copyright trolls this would be an absurdist concern
01:50 matey; i dont think its absurd at all
01:52 matey; this makes me wonder if permissive isnt a little safer at guaranteeing freedom 0 (note please that part of the reason rms went with copyleft is that he got fucked out of his own work using permissive-- back when these issues were MUCH less familiar to the public)

09:14 schestowitz-TR; OK, I said metaphorically
09:15 matey; well duh
09:15 matey; i mean how else is that phrase used
09:15 matey; the thing is youre implying that concern over dependencies is absurd or something
09:15 schestowitz-TR; no
09:15 matey; when really, there are two REALLY GOOD reasons to follow that information
09:16 schestowitz-TR; but reading between the lines might lead to such a conclusion
09:16 SomeH4x0r; https://kill-9.xyz/guides/distrust_cloudflare is it useful? Does it have any other intermediates?
09:16 TR Bot; guides - distrust cloudflare
09:16 schestowitz-TR; yes, it's important to understand what happens
09:16 matey; if by reading between the lines you mean "intepreting that phrase the way its basically always intended" then sure
09:16 SomeH4x0r; hi matey also
09:16 matey; hi
09:16 schestowitz-TR; SomeH4x0r: clownflare is a dirty bomb
09:16 schestowitz-TR; and they lose money
09:16 matey; but the two reaslly good reasons are:
09:16 schestowitz-TR; so you know they will become evil, very evil, soon
09:16 matey; 1. the POINT of course, is that yes, its basically everything
09:17 schestowitz-TR; not sure if they'll start charging everyone or something worse
09:17 matey; 2. if im trying to recommend the LEAST github-encumbered software, that information helps quantify how encumbered it is or isnt
09:17 matey; or if youre trying to predict the projects most likely to move there soon (as projects that have a lot of gh deps often move there eventually)
09:18 matey; basically "theyre on gh or theyre not" is not very fine grained
09:18 schestowitz-TR; it'll blow up
09:18 schestowitz-TR; it already does
09:18 schestowitz-TR; but too slowly
09:18 schestowitz-TR; if Microsoft tries to manipulate too much, staff and projects walk away
09:18 matey; id ask if youre referring to clownflare or gh but since you make the same argument for basically anything negative, theres little pint
09:18 schestowitz-TR; if not, they carry on losing money
09:19 matey; at which point any project that isnt actively maintained could simply disappear forever.
09:19 schestowitz-TR; clownflare and GH are similar in tihis regard
09:19 schestowitz-TR; they lose money
09:19 schestowitz-TR; they offer a fake, worthless, "service"
09:19 schestowitz-TR; and people do not really need them
09:19 schestowitz-TR; and if they start charging, people will leave
09:19 matey; so even if active projects escape github after its collapse
09:19 matey; theyre still going to wipe out decades of history.
09:19 schestowitz-TR; right
09:20 schestowitz-TR; like Linux pre-git
09:20 schestowitz-TR; it's the projects' fault
09:20 schestowitz-TR; they chose proprietary software
09:20 schestowitz-TR; with NO EXPORT OPTION
09:20 schestowitz-TR; except for git tree
09:21 matey; when github collapses its going to be a fucking mess
09:21 matey; for free software
09:21 schestowitz-TR; yes
09:21 schestowitz-TR; but...
09:21 matey; ive always tried to figure out how much stuff is there
09:21 schestowitz-TR; even without Microsoft
09:21 schestowitz-TR; remember when Ton from Blender said
09:21 matey; based on the fsd id say its more than 50% of our software
09:21 schestowitz-TR; >50% might be OK
09:21 schestowitz-TR; as it used to be HIGHER
09:22 schestowitz-TR; a LOT higher
09:22 schestowitz-TR; like 3 years ago
09:22 matey; 90% is more than 50%
09:22 schestowitz-TR; many of the newer projects explore self-hosting, even without gitlab
09:22 schestowitz-TR; they don't fancy microsoft
09:22 SomeH4x0r; One evil with Blender I know is that it now requires OpenGL version above the one my device supports, and it didn't in before.
09:22 schestowitz-TR; except very dumb or bribed projects
09:22 matey; many of the newer projects explore self-hosting, even without gitlab <- well, about that...
09:22 matey; every month the fsd gets new links approved
09:23 matey; maybe dozens
09:23 matey; about half a dozen of which are not github-based
09:23 matey; so
09:23 matey; the ratio isnt changing like you say, if the fsd is any indicator
09:23 schestowitz-TR; how many of these projects are new?
09:24 schestowitz-TR; as in, past 3 years?
09:24 matey; thats a fair question
09:24 matey; probably most, since the links are being updated BUT
09:24 schestowitz-TR; it's the "fresh blood" argument"
09:24 matey; not all, and not a
09:24 matey; well its your: "many of the newer projects explore self-hosting, even without gitlab"
09:24 schestowitz-TR; about generations that are "next" having to be judged as "the future"
09:24 matey; i think youre sugar-coating this
09:24 schestowitz-TR; not really
09:25 schestowitz-TR; when I first saw github things more than 10 years ago github was considered benign
09:25 matey; ok, let me put it another way: i think youre making up progress that doesnt exist.
09:25 schestowitz-TR; and many people saw it like twitter
09:25 schestowitz-TR; "yay! free hosting!"
09:25 schestowitz-TR; matey: ok, let's look at it from anotrher angle

17:16 activelow; anyway, this means, a traditional *nix without any c++ dependency can be maintained, including X11, mplayer, web browser, irc, mail
17:17 activelow; if the fontconfig/gperf dependency can be repaired (not sure how yet), then GTK2 (or 3) can remain, including netsurf and various other goodies
17:18 activelow; i mean, even RISC OS includes an undesireable c++ compiler, not sure what depends on it, nonetheless, baphos is stricter in this regard

17:20 activelow; and gladly i wasn't hitting any cmake dependency so far, which will be another burden, excluding various desireable components, because cmake itself is written in c++ and there isn't any alternative implementation
17:20 BzOS; netsurf latest release is from 2 years ago
17:22 activelow; i fetched latest git-head, while ago
17:22 activelow; and, stability is _good_
17:23 activelow; got an idea how many updates are necessary if c++ dependencies are exluded? rarely any in years, which is exactly what i want.
17:25 activelow; and, if GNOME/GTK are wrecked (systemd/dbus/opengl dependencies), at least some ultra-conservative stable system can remain
17:26 activelow; some other components are a headache still, which may or may not be necessary: ghostscript/LaTex/texlive
17:26 activelow; because, the idea is, such a system _must_ remain capable for scientific work and authoring
17:27 activelow; i see Knuth released his original TeX variant with an incompatible license; i'll know soon enough, if it is sufficient for a markdown/tex/html authoring workflow
17:28 activelow; postscript is probably gone, yet printing onto 9pin matrix printer wouldn't require postscript
17:29 activelow; i must admit, GTK2/3 are desireable, yet as said i have no idea yet, to easily cope with gperf (and who knows what else will be hitting other c++ dependencies, such as cmake)

22:13 schestowitz-TR; DaemonFC: live and learn
22:13 DaemonFC; Well, they had to charge what the book said to, so their problem there isn't exactly my problem.
22:13 DaemonFC; The fact that it took them 2 hours to get the part.
22:14 schestowitz-TR; and so your purchase is becoming chevy patchwork
22:14 DaemonFC; Well, not exactly.
22:14 DaemonFC; The Buick Lacrosse is basically a fancy Chevy Impala.
22:14 schestowitz-TR; old cars, old parts
22:14 DaemonFC; So they share many parts.
22:14 schestowitz-TR; with "smart" cars it'll be worse
22:14 schestowitz-TR; good luck getting parts from just 10 years ago
22:15 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, You can go into the aftermarket for most stuff all the way back as far as you want to go.
22:15 schestowitz-TR; yesterday I walked to 7 stores
22:15 DaemonFC; So I'm not terribly concerned just yet. If I absolutely needed to, I could use an auto parts store tensioner instead of a OE one.
22:15 schestowitz-TR; saved like 80%
22:16 schestowitz-TR; with cars and parking that's harder
22:16 DaemonFC; Mechanical parts have a huge aftermarket.
22:16 schestowitz-TR; and in manchester city center there's almost nowhere to park
22:16 DaemonFC; You can sell so many of the damned things because the Impala and Lacrosse used the same tensioner for like 11 model years.
22:16 DaemonFC; And the Impala is a fleet vehicle.
22:17 DaemonFC; So lots of people buy those used, right, like old cop cars?
22:17 schestowitz-TR; not all cops are old :-)
22:17 DaemonFC; The Lacrosse is just an Impala with better suspension and more features and stuff.
22:17 DaemonFC; Better interior, trim.
22:18 schestowitz-TR; so Lacrosse is a rich fool's product
22:18 DaemonFC; Sort of, yeah.
22:18 DaemonFC; But luxury cars lose value rapidly.
22:18 TR News; "This release contains bug fixes to improve robustness and some additional configuration support. This release note describes whats different between Istio 1.13.2 and 1.13.3." https://istio.io/latest/news/releases/1.13.x/announcing-1.13.3/
22:18 TR Bot; Istio / Announcing Istio 1.13.3
22:18 DaemonFC; But the nice thing about the Lacrosse or Grand Marquis is they were built on top of the Impala or Crown Victoria.
22:18 DaemonFC; So you can service the luxury car with mass market parts.
22:19 DaemonFC; Can't do that with most luxury cars so you are screwed.
22:19 DaemonFC; The Sable was an upmarket Taurus, and so on.
22:19 DaemonFC; If you get a luxury car, make sure they built it off something mass market so there's like, opportunities to dig into the aftermarket and leverage scale.
22:20 DaemonFC; That way you can keep it going for a long time without any $1,200 MARISOL wheel hub bearings.
22:20 DaemonFC; $600 an axle MARISOL brake pads.
22:21 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, Even at the Chevy dealer, which is terribly overpriced for brake pads, it's $249 an axle, and a wheel hub bearing is like $400.
22:21 DaemonFC; And so you can take your Buick there and just tell them to service it there if you want, or an independent, and get it for even less.

22:22 DaemonFC; Can't do that with a Beemer.
22:22 DaemonFC; They have to be BMW brake pads.
22:22 DaemonFC; If your mechanic does the job, the only thing you save on is labor.
22:22 DaemonFC; He still has to go to a dealer and buy BMW pads.
22:23 DaemonFC; So he goes to their parts department and BMW gets you anway.
22:23 DaemonFC; *anyway
22:23 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, Then there's the $300 BMW oil change.
22:23 DaemonFC; And so a bunch of BMW victims noticed BMW using Castrol synthetic and go "Why the fuck am I paying $300 for this guy to pour Castrol in?".
22:24 DaemonFC; So they go to Jiffy Lube and have them pour in Castrol Syntec, which is a synthetic oil meant for American cars, and it went ahead and sludged up their BMW engine.
22:24 DaemonFC; And they didn't save much money then.
22:25 DaemonFC; You can use Euro Castrol in an American car if you want to.
22:25 DaemonFC; It won't hurt anything as long as the viscosity is correct.
22:25 DaemonFC; But you can't use cheaper synthetic oils meant for an American car in a BMW.

22:29 DaemonFC; And after they did it and charged him $100, he could not add oil fast enough to the engine.

22:31 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, Actually, out of all the things the squealing could have been today, I got off relatively light.
22:31 DaemonFC; The only cheaper part it could have been was the idler pulley.

22:32 DaemonFC; You need to make those expensive parts happy by not killing them with cheaper parts that you're not servicing.
