Because those are like the game engine and such. The assets are compressed already and won't go down more so BtrFS gives up and stores them like they already are.
07:36 DaemonFC; It depends largely on what you store on the volume as to what compression ratios you can expect. It's totally reasonable to subvolume and compress the root subvolume but not the home one.

07:37 DaemonFC; But it also makes sense to just apply it everywhere and let the file system decide because you will have some candidates for compression in your /home and BtrFS will skip over compressed files anyway.

23:05 DaemonFC; ZSwap makes more sense if you want to use a physical SWAP. It caches things in a compressed memory area, which can be evicted later if the memory area needs to be used. But this is more about maintaining good I/O throughput and lessening write cycles.
23:05 DaemonFC; ZRam can only really avoid LRU inversion for sure when you are only swapping to it, and have no physical SWAP.
23:05 DaemonFC; In this case, you don't want a physical SWAP and should make ZRam 100% of the size of RAM.
23:06 DaemonFC; The more it fills up with code being swapped into it, the less RAM that code uses because it's being stored using fast compression (ZStandard, hopefully. If not, change it.)

23:07 DaemonFC; If it says you're swapping 300 MB, then figure that would be about 1 GB of RAM if it were all uncompressed.

23:08 DaemonFC; If you have 16+ GB or RAM, you can probably safely use ZRam with no physical swap. The more that gets paged out, the more actual RAM you effectively have.

23:11 DaemonFC; The way I understand it, the reasons you won't likely "feel" system jank due to the compression is it's used sparingly as-needed of course due to "swappiness", so it may never happen at all until it needs to or the system isn't working on something anyway.

23:14 DaemonFC; Yeah, Zstd is about the ratio of DEFLATE only several times faster.
23:15 DaemonFC; For disk compression and ZRam I tell the kernel to use level 1. Using higher levels doesn't affect the ratio much but it starts incurring a severe performance penalty.
23:16 DaemonFC; Like I think one set of benchmarks I saw (before further optimizations landed later) showed that your throughput on that system would drop from 1600 MB/s to 50 between 1 and 15, although 15 only reduced the data size a further 3%.
23:16 DaemonFC; So higher settings aren't worth it unless you're using .tar.zstd or something to ARCHIVE.
23:16 DaemonFC; And feel like waiting a while one time while everything's going in.
