What’s the deal with parking lots?

The history of humanity is all about overcoming nature. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. And yet we as a society seem to be perfectly happy with parking lots being totally exposed to the elements.

What's up with that?

Why aren’t there more covered parking lots? Why do we just accept that our cars are going to be ovens in the summer, and that we’re going to get soaked when it’s raining? (Yes, umbrellas exist, but juggling an umbrella and several bags of shopping, or even a shopping cart, is not a fun time.) Some hotels, malls, and airports have parking garages, but why aren’t there any grocery stores with roofs over their parking lots? Hell, as a bonus they could even install solar panels on the roof to power lights and EV charging stations.

Brought to you by, well, I think you can guess.
