Horner and Wolff agree McLaren’s Lando Norris is an F1 title contender

Mon, 20 May 2024 10:47:35 GMT

British driver pushed Verstappen for victory at Imola

‘We expect them to be competitive at all circuits,’ says Horner

Christian Horner and Toto Wolff found themselves in rare agreement as the rival team principals hailed the extraordinary progress of Lando Norris and McLaren over the past 12 months and declared the Briton a contender for the title.

Max Verstappen won the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola for Red Bull on Sunday but was chased down in the final laps by Norris, who finished 0.7sec behind and believed he could have taken the win with one or two more laps.

McLaren driver pushed Max Verstappen in tense Imola climax

Norris revealed he watched golf and boxing the night before

Lando Norris said he was praying for just one more lap to have a shot at victory at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix after a thrilling final fight with Max Verstappen at Imola. The British driver also revealed he had been up the night before the race until 2am, watching the title-fight boxing and the US PGA Championship golf.

Verstappen held on to win at Imola but only after the final laps came alive as Norris hunted him down, closing to within under second and ultimately finishing just 0.725sec behind the world champion. The 24-year-old McLaren driver was convinced that with another lap he would have been able to try to make a pass on Verstappen.

“I’ve always been an F1 fan,” says tennis’s world No 2, Aryna Sabalenka. “I’m super excited to feel the atmosphere. It’s so cool, being here around the cars … it’s something new, something different.

Can Sabalenka imagine speaking to media right before walking on to court for a match? “It’s so different,” she replies. “I cannot see myself doing all this stuff before the biggest match of my life. It’s really cool to see.”

Max Verstappen holds off Lando Norris surge to win F1 Emilia-Romagna GP

Sun, 19 May 2024 15:28:54 GMT

Norris unable to make move after Red Bull’s tyres wear down

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz third, Oscar Piastri fourth for McLaren

Proof then that there is life yet in the old dog, Formula One’s Emilia‑Romagna Grand Prix managed to deliver a finale at Imola worthy of the venerable venue. While Max Verstappen was the winner once again, he was chased to the flag in a thrilling climax by Lando Norris – providing definitive evidence that the world champion will not have it all his own way this season.

F1 has been a tough sell these past two years, Verstappen romping to the championship all but unchallenged last season and the opening meetings of 2024 were more of the same – a Groundhog Day narrative that was becoming somewhat stale until McLaren and Norris arrived at the last round in Miami to breathe invigorating life into what was becoming a torpid season.

Max Verstappen battles back to claim Emilia-Romagna F1 GP pole

Sat, 18 May 2024 18:53:04 GMT

World champion equals Senna record of eight straight poles

Oscar Piastri demoted to fifth so Lando Norris second on grid

Max Verstappen pulled off a comeback he believed was his best for more than five years to claim pole position for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, delivering a superb lap under immense pressure that raised him to stand alongside Ayrton Senna with a record eighth consecutive pole.

In the year of the 30th anniversary of Senna’s death at Imola, Verstappen had to dig deep after a torrid weekend during which he and Red Bull have struggled with the car’s grip and balance. He had been out of sorts and down on pace but made it count when it mattered against a huge charge from the McLarens of Oscar Piastri in second and Lando Norris in third, although Piastri was later given a three-place grid penalty for impeding Kevin Magnussen.

Lewis Hamilton has mixed first day in front of Ferrari faithful at Imola

Fri, 17 May 2024 18:15:55 GMT

Hamilton at Imola for first time since agreeing 2025 Ferrari move

Max Verstappen angry after Hamilton blocked him in practice

Lewis Hamilton, for so long the thorn in Ferrari’s side, takes to the track this weekend in Italy as a potential hero in waiting. The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola will be Hamilton’s first race in front of the Ferrari faithful since he signed for the Scuderia in February and, while he is still driving a Mercedes, for the tifosi Hamilton embodies visions of a return to glory in scarlet.

Hamilton shocked Formula One and Mercedes when he announced he had done a deal to join Ferrari in 2025, the team he has battled with since his career began. The Scuderia last won the drivers’ championship in 2007, when Kimi Räikkönen pipped Hamilton to the title in the British driver’s debut season. A year later Hamilton denied Ferrari’s Felipe Massa the crown in a nail-biting finale in Brazil.

Natalie Robyn, FIA’s first female chief executive, leaves post after 18 months

Wed, 08 May 2024 17:57:23 GMT

FIA says Robyn will ‘pursue opportunities elsewhere’

Fourth senior employee to depart governing body recently

Natalie Robyn is leaving Formula One’s governing body after serving just 18 months as its first chief executive, the FIA said on Wednesday.

Robyn was one of the most senior female executives in motorsport and her arrival from the auto industry was hailed by the sport’s governing body, the FIA, as a “transformative moment” for an organisation led by Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Ben Sulayem, from the United Arab Emirates, highlighted Robyn’s appointment as proof of his commitment to equality and diversity after a controversy over remarks he had once made about women “who think they are smarter than men”.

Michael Schumacher on the phone in Japan: Jon Nicholson’s best photograph

Wed, 08 May 2024 13:44:50 GMT

‘“What do you want me to do?” he said when we got to his trailer. I couldn’t have him just staring at me, so I said: “Maybe pick up the phone?” I don’t know if he called anyone’

I got into photographing motor sport through my friendship with Damon Hill. When we met, 40 years ago, I had a job in the marketing department of an office supplies manufacturer and he was mostly on a motorbike, either earning his living as a dispatch rider or racing at Brands Hatch. Then he switched to racing on four wheels – his dad, Graham Hill, had been a double Formula 1 world champion. Damon is a really shy bloke and it was important to him to be with people who weren’t just fascinated by his family history. I didn’t know one end of a racing car from the other.

My ambition was to work for Allsport, the sports photography agency. Eventually, I got a job there and stayed on the staff for three years until I couldn’t cope any more with going to Tottenham on a Tuesday night in the middle of February. Eamonn McCabe, the picture editor of the Guardian and the Observer, gave me a few shifts a week, and suddenly I was in at the deep end.

Lando Norris: nice guy finishes first after long road to top of F1 | Giles Richards

Mon, 06 May 2024 13:43:44 GMT

The McLaren driver’s maiden win in Miami underlined his world championship potential after a 19-year journey

Lando Norris’s debut Formula One victory in the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday may have taken an awfully long time for a driver with such prodigious talent but it is without doubt a win well-deserved. This is the culmination of a 19-year journey that was almost over before it had begun at the age of five when his parents got cold feet over his attempt to emulate Valentino Rossi.

Norris is respected and well-liked throughout the paddock, an endearing 24-year-old who hangs out to do the clear-up work with the team, and who his mechanics consider “a friend as well as a driver”. That the victory could not have happened to a nicer bloke has been the rudimentary but accurate assessment.

'Today was my day': Lando Norris proud to win first Grand Prix – video

Mon, 06 May 2024 10:26:50 GMT

Lando Norris ended Max Verstappen's crushing winning streak by claiming the maiden victory of his career in the Miami Grand Prix. In his 110th Formula One appearance, the 24-year-old from Bristol, who started fifth, took advantage of a safety car period at the Hard Rock Stadium to move ahead of Verstappen before holding his nerve to take the chequered flag. An emotional Norris crossed the line seconds clear of Verstappen, who had no answer to the British driver's brilliant drive as he claimed McLaren's first victory in nearly three years. After the race Norris joked: 'Today was my day, I was like, gonna throw the safety car now, and it all worked out perfectly so, whoever that person was, I thank them, and I share my trophy and champagne with them.'

‘I am an optimist’: why Mario Andretti is not ready to give up on his F1 dream

Sun, 05 May 2024 13:45:55 GMT

The 1978 world champion and his son are frustrated by their rejected bid to launch an F1 team but are not giving up hope

The former Formula One world champion Mario Andretti, perhaps the most successful driver in US history, is certainly at ease in the paddock for this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix.

The 84-year-old, who won his F1 championship in 1978 for Lotus and has also taken four IndyCar titles, victories at the Indy 500, the Daytona 500 and has been honoured as the US driver of the year in three separate decades, still revels in immersing himself in the sport and his pleasure at its burgeoning revival in his home country is palpable.

Max Verstappen storms to Miami GP pole after earlier sprint success

Sat, 04 May 2024 21:27:13 GMT

Red Bull driver faster than Ferrari duo Leclerc and Sainz

McLaren’s Norris qualifies fifth with Hamilton eighth

Max Verstappen remained determinedly very much on top of qualifying, continuing his unbeaten record for the season with another comfortable pole for the Miami Grand Prix. But in his wake Fernando Alonso is set to square up with Formula One’s governing body, the FIA. Alonso was angry and frustrated that they had failed to punish Lewis Hamilton after a controversial incident in Saturday morning’s sprint, claiming Hamilton had “ruined a lot of people’s races”.

For Sunday’s GP Verstappen once more holds all the cards with his sixth consecutive pole this season, beating the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz into second and third by just over a tenth of a second, having already taken victory in the sprint race.
