Re: "what do we call email for Gemini? gmail is straight out......"

In: s/misfin

sorry let me clarify. yeah just a generic term of sending an email-like message over Gemini, be it on misfin or some other email-like service.

"yeah shoot me a (simple noun) "

"Hold on, let me linux that over to you!"

๐Ÿ˜Ž flipperzero ยท Feb 06 at 21:37:

I think using the protocols name as a verb term itself to describe the messaging interaction should work well enough.

Example: "Yo imma misfin you this stupid cat picture real quick" "k cool"

"Hey i caught your misfin. Wtf is longcat?" "Thats what im sayin!"

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ zetamacs ยท Feb 06 at 21:42:

@Ruby_Witch But it's also generally not used (GNU). So really, it should be a GNU+Linux.

To not at least acknowledge how niche it is would be unfair.

Do we need a gmail in gemini?

Why not just using SMTP?

Or do you want something like instant messaging over gemini?

๐Ÿš€ mk270 ยท Feb 06 at 23:05:

To Emru's point, "do you want something like instant messaging over gemini?"

What is being developed is a bit like email or instant messaging. It *uses* Gemini text format, but it is not "over" Gemini, and efforts are being made to minimise the potential confusion.

Misfin is its own protocol (on its own port and with its own wire format), separate from Gemini.

@emru

From misfin.org

> Email is just as bad as the Web. It's grown to be complex, secure only with other protocols bolted onto it, and it supports all the nasty misfeatures that the Web does, like cookies and tracking beacons. Even worse, it's seeing active hostility from the major players of the Internet. Most ISPs block traffic on port 25, and you can't deliver mail to any of the big names (like Gmail) without jumping through hoops - and even then, it's a coin toss.

> It's spartan, but not overly so. It's only concerned with sending messages; mailbox management and relaying are out-of-band. Neither does it do much to combat spam - it probably won't be used by enough people to matter - but it avoids the worst of SMTP's security gotchas.

smallweb mail is a good idea because it gives more control over the technology and trims it way down to make it manageable.

there's at least a few instant messengers here in Gemini.
