Bitcoin IS Worse for Global Warming Than Cars

It’s probably true that cars emit more CO2 than bitcoin.

And by that I mean it’s definitely true. No doubt about it. So why do I say that Bitcoin is worse than cars?

Because Bitcoin uses up energy without providing any value for society whatsoever. Energy that could and indeed should be used for replacing fossil fuel use in other areas.

Bitcoin mining run on renewable energy is bad for the environment, even if all embodied energy in its part is also green. Because from a societal perspective it’s completely wasted energy. It’s used to fuel ponzi and pump-and-dump schemes, fraud, criminal activity, and more. The actual valid use cases for cryptocurrency continues to be a tiny, almost insignificant, fraction of its continued existence.
