I'm really grateful for these insights, and somewhat bemused that Swing and Qt come back as the main web app alternatives every time I've asked around for the past 10 or so years. The tool JBanana has written to simplify working with Swing is definitely something I'll have a look at.


When it comes to Java apps; how slim is the JRE these days? My experience as a sysadmin is that java apps are horrifyingly slow to start, but that may be because of excessive scaffolding and frameworks, I guess.


I don't really know anything about the weight and speed of Qt either. Might have to look that up.


Toby mentions an idea for TUI on a smartphone, and that got me wondering about mouse clicking in TUI apps. Is that something that has to be enabled in the terminal? Do all terminals support it? While it probably won't be my first choice any time soon I quite like TUIs and think they're vastly underrated.
