2023-09-02: Project for ROOPHLOCH 2023

Yesterday I had the idea of making a simple gemini client for the 3DS.

I've gotten back into using my 3DS recently, and have been really enjoying playing the games I grew up with again. It's a New Nintendo 3DS XL! I got it before the price started rising for 3DSs a few years ago. It came with a sizable SD card and Hey Pikmin for around $80 iirc, a really good deal even then.

I homebrewed the 3DS once I got it and have been enjoying seeing the ecosystem (which I already thought was well developed and well thought out at the time) grow to become even easier. Things like Universal Updater making hombrew management beyond easy especially.

Anyways, last night I had an idea while using my 3DS.

What if I made a really simple gemini browser for the 3DS? Something dead basic but still fully following gemini and gemtext specification.

Then this morning I go to check my feeds, and I see ROOPHLOCH 2023 be announced on solderpunk's gemlog![1]

I decided to take that as a sign and starting after this blog post I'm going to get my 3DS dev environment up and see what I can do. I want to work on projects relating to the Gemini protocol, so everything just lines up for this.

My plan, which probably can be figured out already, is to post from my 3DS! I'll probably do a little extra and go on a hike or bike somewhere more remote and hotspot it with my phone.

Excited to get started!
