Twatter

Why is it still a thing? Why doesn't everyone ignore it? It's just generally bad for our mental health.

So I just watched Linsey Ellis' video on getting "canceled" on Twatter for "racism"... Well the "racist" tweet in question was the straw that broke the camels back and caused the Twatter hive mind to bring up every item in the Linsey Ellis chapter of the internet's Book of Grudges.

I'd say that the original tweet can only be seen as racist if you squint hard enough... After drinking at least one bottle of vodka and are really fucking stoned... (and now just wait until this gemlog gets any amount of traffic and I will be on the chopping block as well... Luckily I doubt I will even see that, since social media generally don't exist as far as I'm concerned)

Linsey Ellis - Mask Off

Just having watched the entire hour and forty minute video has had a noticeable impact on my mental health. This makes me really glad that my general stance on Twatter is "What's that? Doesn't sound very edible..." Also makes me wonder why there are still people on Twatter and not everyone treats it like the fucking plague most of the time.

It's generally (apparently) just a place that breeds toxicity and is used for marketing, most of which is generally known as outrage marketing. Remember the Gillette something-something-men ad? I obviously barely do and can't presently be arsed to watch the video I am linking below. Either way, it was quite an effective marketing strategy and resulted in some funny pictures people took of having tossed their Gillette razors in their toilets. As covered in the video (if my memory serves correctly) there also was the topic of that fellow (forgot his name) kneeling during the singing of the US anthem at the start of some American football game. This was apparently similarly bad to murdering someone... At least if seemingly the entirety of the US was to be believed at the time... Guy got a Nike sponsorship some time later which resulted in people posting videos of them lighting their Nike shoes on fire.

HBomberguy - WOKE BRANDS (yes, it's actually in all caps)

Other example, that Lil' Nas X (or whatever, as you can probably tell by now, after the 4 billionth time, I don't really keep up with Twatter) fellow has a line of "special edition" "Satanic" Nike shoes with a tiny drop of human blood. As you can guess, the christian Twatter mob was outraged again, resulting in more attention being brought to Mr. Network Attached Storage and Nike. It was effective enough for me to have even heard of it, which is saying something.

The Twatter infection

This is not really related, just wanted to mention it.

Some time ago there was some controversy regarding the suckless people potentially being nazis or racist or generally not being nice people. I am not saying anything on the matter itself as, again, I have barely paid attention to it because I prefer my mental health being almost stable. They might very well be nazis, I presently don't care as it is not the topic at hand. The idiotic thing however, was that one of the first pieces of reasoning for them being nazis, is them being anti systemd... I think I'm just going to awkwardly leave that hanging there for now...

Actual problems

One of the things that Linsey brings up in her video essay is the fact that Twatter has a tendency to pick on people who might be secretly racist way more often than combatting overt racists or tackling actual bad ideas (like this sodding hive mind mentality). Just imagine what could be accomplished if people wouldn't keep going at each other's throats every other day for trivial shit like "they made an edgy joke 3 years ago" or "I am so fucking piss drunk, stoned and high that the sun appears to be racist for not being black". There is such a large amount of energy being spent writing angry messages that could be spend on, say writing an angry essay and shoot that into the void on a little know self-hosted platform (cough cough), which results in a much healthier release of said anger that will also not last too long. After I'm done with this thing, I will probably not think about it again with this intensity for the next few years (or until the next Twatter thing takes over my NewPipe feed through people very apathetically covering it because they have to make a living _some_ how).

Or maybe have a nice cup of tea instead... Not that I personally drink anything else then icetea, but my point stands.

Wait... Was I making a point...?

In my defence, it is currently 2021-04-26 01:32:13 and I just watched a nearly two hour long video essay...
