Activation energy

2021-01-26

In the realm of chemistry, activation energy is the energy needed to get a reaction to occur.

You can take advantage of this metaphorically when you have a large or daunting task to complete. Instead of jumping right into it, just lower its activation energy. That way, once it's low enough, you can start it in earnest.

For example, say you have to clean up a space in your home, like a garage or spare room. Instead of diving in and trying to tackle the whole thing at once, just do a small part, maybe even the easiest part. Don't try to empty the whole bookshelf, but just clear a path to it. Don't sweep the entire floor clean, but just make a space. Aim for a modest initial accomplishment.

What's good about this? First, you make progress, which feels good. Second, you actually achieve a concrete improvement, which feels even better. Third, it'll be easier to take on the big jobs later on, because it'll take less energy. So it's more likely that they'll actually get done!
