Realist Photography in 2023

I found a cheap Stereo Realist camera on eBay.

I took it with me on holiday and snapped three rolls of 35mm film - black and white, panchromatic Kentmere 400.

Back home, I developed the film in the kitchen sink using a Paterson tank and Caffenol.

The Caffenol recipe and process were as follows:

300ml Water - From my kichen tap.

4tsp Sodium carbonate - AKA washing soda or soda ash. In powder form, not crystals!

1tsp Ascorbic acid - AKA vitamin C. In powder form, not tablets!

6tsp Cheap caffenated instant coffee - I used Maxwell House as it was the cheapest brand in the shop.

I mixed all the ingredients together and allowed the solution to stand for 5 min.

10 min developing time at room temperature (~18-20°C), inverting the Paterson tank for 15 sec every 30 sec.

Wash with plenty of water.

5 min fix with Ilford Rapid Fixer.

Wash again with plenty of water and a drop of dish soap.

Hang to dry.

I read a lot of Caffenol methods, and this seemed to be the gist of them all. It's probably not ideal, but it worked for me.

My negatives had some residue on them, so I need to clean them better in future.

I popped them into the flatbed scanner with little care for removing dust etc.

Using Gnu Image Manipulation Program, I cropped the frames and adjusted the levels.

I made the stereo pairs by popping the left and right frames of each image into Stereophoto Maker and using the auto colour correction and auto aligninment tools.
