Jobs

Back

It took some time but I moved from my previous job to a new job in a $corporation. The previous place was still a big company but it had the mentality of a small startup; a lot of freedom in tools, ideas. I was able to spend a year on developing and testing ideas. Now in the $corporation it's different. First of all, it's a big place; you need to open a ticket for everything. You want some access to a server? Create a ticket. You want extra disk space? A ticket. You want to use google drive? Ticket. You want IMAP access? Ticket of course. Secondly, there is a focus on the here and now. Things must have a potential client who pays before we even start to theorize, let alone build them. We need to do our own PMing in a sense, think and meet with potential clients and only think about the next quarter or so.

I think my first gig was great and unique and I appreciate it so much. But I know I had to move because that place I used to work is no more: corporate shenanigans made that place into something completely different so I'm glad I did what I did at that given time. Add to that the fact we're heading into a recession or we're in a one. I'm glad I have a place to work, contribute, learn and be appreciated.

If you come down to it, it's an issue of expectations and disappointments, which is one of the reasons for suffering, according to Buddhism. Appreciating what you have a way to alleviate that, comparing the good in your life with the small, temporary discomforts of unrealized expectations and hopefully the good will win.

In addition I'm testing Mastodon. I was never a social network guy; no Facebook (and its derivatives) and no Twitter. But perhaps Mastodon will be useful and enjoyable. Of course, there's an Emacs plugin for Mastodon. I'm also pinging my IRC accounts but I see almost no activity there.
