reflection on gemini 7 months in

Hello. Today I would like to talk about gemini. Recently on a famous post by a now-former gemini author it was mentioned that there is too much self-referential talk about gemini on gemini. I dont disagree with this and generally try to write about non-tech related things to balance out the great disparity of computer hobbiest content from, well, everything else. In this case though, Im gonna do what I want to do, which is write about gemini. To anyone who doesn't like that, I recommend they consult the picture below:

I feel that the true potential of gemini is undersold. There is no doubt that gemini was built by and designed for computer hobbiest who are knowledgeable about the underlying technology. The main project page prides its technical aspects, and assumes you already know about gopher, http, and how protocols work. Theres a whole lot of focus on the specs, but what about the actual human experience? What does gemini actually provide people that they didn't have before? What do you, as a netizen and a human being, actually get out of this?

The answer to that question largely depends on the kind of person you are. If you are a hacker type person who enjoys tinkering with new technology or working with retrocomputers then gemini offers potential for development.

Gemini has a huge amount of potential for people who would like an outlet to share their thoughts with the world. Authors, bloggers, musicians, photographers. A place to stake our own little corner of the internet and actually have a chance to be seen by eachother.

the underlying theme of gemini is creativity and community. Individual people comming together from every background imaginable, uniting under the idea that the internet is a place to share thoughts and create connections. Not a generic, souless place corrupted and monopolised. A place for authors and entusiast of every kind to express themselves. Most importantly, a place to discover people of every kind, and browse the collection of unique bytes they formed with passion and creativity.
