I Am Currently Reading

roadside picnic

a sci-fi story that is unique for focusing on the lives and realities of common place person instead of the elitist figureheads of power most sci-fi novels go for. I first got into the book through the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games (playing shadow of chernobyl now, best fps ive played in years and its from 2007 lol) So far its very well written, translated and entertaining. Im reading the rediscovered classics version released in 2012 btw, which is the latest version.

Hajime no ippo

Hajime no ippo is a fantastic comic series that centers around boxing. If you ever need a boost in inspiration, this series will get you MOTIVATED. A very compelling narrative about learning to overcome weakness and gain strength (yes a very common trope but this is a masterclass in doing it well. The fight/boxing scenes are illustrated with such power you can feel the punches in your minds eye. This is largely thanks to the artist career as a real-life boxing trainer!

Arts

Soul Arts Hands On Review

Buy Soul Arts Here

Take a look at this thing of beauty. Such a dope looking book, its friggin sweeet. More beautiful than any jewel. Soul Arts is an artbook that collects hundreds of artist finest submissions for contest based on the games, then binds them in the best looking cover+slipcase I have ever seen. I WANT THE PYSICAL EDITION SOOO SOOOO BAD MAN! Unfortunately I couldn't justify the 80$ asking price for a book when it was first announced, and I still cant now.

THANK GOODNESS that they offer a 15$ pdf version (DRM FREE!) which can be loaded onto the ereader. 15$ is a slightly easier pill to swallow and I held off on even that for months but this week finally bit the bullet and got the damn thing. If I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY like the book I might consider it as a christmaas present to myself. But for 80 dollaroonies the books contents gotta be so cool that looking at each page is near orgasmic.

The PDF version looks great by the way. Unfortunately my kobo is too small to really enjoy properly so my laptop is the main way of reading this one. My one complaint is that the text size is a little too small and hard to read sometimes, but this is usually due to trying to fit more of the image on the page (which is a fair trade for an art book) Its not too bad to zoom in though.

Epicureans

I just found this one today while browsing the publisher of Soul Art's website.

The book looked beautiful with an enchanting icy blue design. I love the covers mythological wheel design thingy. The description was interesting enough to peaque my interest with a modern gothic mystery/horror premise. The book also is set during the winter soulstice which feels right considering that time will be upon us soon enough IRL.

Very fortunately this one is only 28$ physical and 9$ digital which is a far better cost effective than the last entry. So for 9$ I bit and got this one too. It works much better on the ereader, and the illustrative art looks very nice helps set the mood. I hope its good, that physical edition looks very cool and I WAANT IT if the story is worth re-reading.

Lost

Humanity Lost is an on-going sci-fi comic series that I first heard of from this video by Curiosity Archive

The Dark Future Of Humanity Lost Video

Get Humanity Lost Here For 1.5$

It just recently reached page 150 (155 as of this writing) which marks the competion of volume 1 (made of 5 seperate issues). Out of all the books listed here I URGE YOU TO CHECK THIS ONE OUT!!! This series is such a gem with fantastic artwork. Many neat double spreads, sharp linework, great use shading with a neon red, green, blue pallette that gives a cinematic arthouse vibe. I also really appreciate the interesting direction the author took on the direction of the human speies and the evolution of humanity.

Price wise, the cost of entry is 1.5$ per month for FULL ACCESS to all of the comic series, extras, comissions everything. Callum wanted to make sure that everyone who wanted to see their work could at a very fair price. Now is a particularly good moment to start a subscription seeing as volume 1 just got completed. Its worth the 1.50$ asking price, trust me.

Most impressive of all, every bit of artwork is done by 1 person. Traditionally to achieve this level of quality a full production team would be needed. Someone to do the key frames, another to do the line work, another to do the coloring, another to do shading and touchup. Yet with the power of talent and technology, one person can now sucessfully do all of these roles armed with a computer, drawing tablet, and proper software. What a time to be alive where curators can express their creativity to their full potential while being directly supported by fans. So yea give Callum your monnies they definitely deserve it.

& Hummus

The surreal World Of Rust & Humus By Curiosity Archive

Read Rust And Humus Here

Rust & Hummus is equal parts art book and world building project. It describes the birth and evolution of a surreal and dreamlike universe filled with all manor of unique, wonderous, bizarre, and delightfuly cute beings. Throughout the book is the theme of the cyclic nature of time and how civilizations will rise, fall, and its corpse being the catalyst for new eras of civization. The very starting pages that describe the universes creation myth for whatever reason has stuck with me for a long time. We think of celestial objects as big innanimate rocks and huge explosions of gas, while in R&H cosmic objects are much more alive, giant seeds floating through space, stars being fuzzy and organic. I like it.

I have never experienced a book quite like this one. Very few artistic pieces make me feel a sense of wonder like rust & Humus does.

Rust & Humus is free to read online, if you want to own the ebook its 1$, such great and beautful work for less than a cup of coffee. Please check it out!
