sirens in the night

i want to write of a scene that plays in my head every now and then. a part of myself that i hold close.

a 6-year-old boy, who had thought about nothing but aliens and fairies and boats, who had known only the shimmer of street lamps through a window on a rainy night, and the moon's comforting glow.

a 6-year-old boy, with his face pressed against the window mesh, gazing up at the stars and wondering just how small he was.

for all he knew, nothing existed past the treeline. the world just sort of... ended. the furthest thing away was the metal tower with the blinking light on top.

and in the distance, in the night, the sirens played their lullaby.

the sirens. a small, but sharp, sadness passes over the boy. he couldn't help but feel soothed though; high... low... high... low... playing every now and then, only to fade out of existence.

he made his way to bed and slowly, slowly... drifted to sleep.
