These are some of my favourite things.
Red Rocket (2020 - Sean Baker's latest film (I loved The Florida Project, and enjoyed Tangerine as well). I loved this. It made me question a lot of things about the world and myself, which is the effect I really want films to have on me.
Babyteeth (2019) - I've been watching quite a lot of Australian film recently, and most of them are pretty dark. This is no exception: it follows the life of a 16 year old Australian girl recently diagnosed with cancer. Very funny in parts, and emotionally pretty devastating. I think I connected with it particularly because I recognised many of the parts of Sydney where it was filmed, and it felt very real to me: it didn't pander to the audience at all, which is something I really look for and appreciate in film.
This Is Going to Hurt (BBC/AMC, 2022) - A very dark, funny and disturbing look at the life of a NHS junior doctor in 2006. Adapted from the diary released as a book under the same name in 2017. The best thing I've seen from the BBC in years. It's made me a fan of Ben Whishaw, and Ambika Mod is superb.
