on war

Ok, we are now heading directly into WWIII it seems, on the one hand a total weird thing to think of, on the other hand i have subconciously alway thought that it may happen in my lifetime. We had just a TOO LONG phase of relative peace (i know, the people in Syria and some other parts of the world would disagree, but i mean a BIG one).

An older neighbour of me who was an german soldier in WWII told me as a child some of his experiences, one of the stories that stuck with me was the one in which he told me of the beginning of WWII as he experienced it:

He was just serving his mandatory military service as he was transfered to the polish border, he knew that there were tensions, but he didn't had to much thoughts on it.. then, one evening they were told to prepare for a big exercise in the next morning and get their kit ready - nothing particular uncommon in his unit as he told me. The next morning they got the order to move over the polish border, that was the moment he realised that this would be real this time, but he also thought that it would be just a small skirmish, a few lines on the maps would be redrawn and all would be over in a few weeks... This few weeks lasted years and took him from Europe over Africa to Russia and costed him two fingers, a foot and the ability to sleep in peace for the rest of his life.

So, whats the meaning of this little story? I think it is, that none of us normal people can predict how big things will get. Perhaps the whole conflict in the Ukraine will simmer down in the next weeks, a few lines on maps will be redrawn and everything will calm down again, life will go on as usual... or this will escalate to a big one, and in the end humanity will be thrown back into the stone age.
