at the gym

Yesterday my wife and i were working out at the gym (i count it as a success: our new years resolution made it at least into February) and as with any other social gathering you can observe interesting things and behaviour with the people around you. In the early 2000s i was an hardcore iron pumper and my workouts as with anyone else in that "gym" (more of a dirty room in an abandoned office building) was hyper focused on their training. We spoke seldom and everyone just went in, did their workout and left. Now in this "fancy gym" my wife and i are attending there seems to be much more socializing and much less focus on training... There are guys and gals that workout 10 minutes, spend 10 minutes chatting to their pals, check their phone for a few minutes, workout a few minutes more, and so on.

I mean, who am i to judge? Its just a curious observation for myself. The only thing i really don't like is the constant checking of the smartphones... as if it is impossible to disconnect from the hive for at least an hour. Sometimes a thought crosses my mind: Are we heading to a Borg like society?
