not being able to visit patients is bad...

As i have stated already somewhere, i life in Germany and we used to have a very good public healthcare system. Due to the reforms of the last decades this system is now getting worse, professionals are leaving and the care of the patients is starting to get bad. This situation is not a result of COVID, it was already getting bad before, but with the added strain of more COVID related cases it is now getting really bad.

My dad was admitted to intensive care on Christmas eve due to heart problems, it was so bad that we all thought he is going to die soon... but the personal on the intensive care did a really good job patching him back together so that he could go to rehab. There the problems started: He got weaker with every day. Where he was able to speak clearly and strongly in the intensive care unit he was now merely whispering on the telephone (we could not visit him due to COVID restrictions). The care personal told us that he was not able to eat on his own and that they needed to feed him. We called the doctor of this ward of the hospital and after we told him that his state is getting worse than on intensive care he simply answered with "That is the past, he is old and weak... you have to arrange with that". We are talking about a man who was riding motorcycles a year ago and driving a car a month ago. We got really frustrated but what could we do?

After two weeks the rehabilitation ended and he was transferred to a nursing home for the elderly. The day he arrived there we got an enraged call from the head nurse there: "This poor man!" she said, he was not as nearly fed enough in the hospital, his care lacked on all ends, he had open sores on his legs and his teeth seemed to not have seen a toothbrush for weeks. He entered the rehabilitation hospital with a body weight around 70 kg... now he weighted merely 50 kg...

Now, one and a half week later in the care of the nurses he is getting much better. He is now again able to speak again over whats app, is gaining weight and strength back and we all hope that he will make a good recovery to at least gain some of his old abilities back. The best part is: In this nursing home we can visit him so we are positive that a degradation of his state due to lack of care like in the rehab clinic will not occur here.

What can we do to not letting this happen again?
