I'm So Bored With The Modern Web That I Ended Up Making A Gemlog

Everything on the modern web is crap.

It used to be fun to explore random websites and discover new things and see what people are creating, but then someone spilled capitalism all over everything and now it's all ruined. Even making modern web pages is a pain in the gonads. I can't be bothered any more.

Everything capitalism touches turns to cack. Look at the state of The Website Formerly Known As Twitter, for example. Streaming services are gradually offering less value for more money, the games industry is riddled with bastards, and every single Modern Web Thing is just designed to hold you upside down by the ankles and shake as much change out of your pockets as possible as quickly as possible. If not your money, then your data. What's next? Sucking my literal blood down the actual wires?

I'm bloody miserable about it. They can shove AI up their A-Holes too.

So, I'm fighting back in my own, futile way. I've started buying CDs and acquiring digital downloads of music I like, with the goal of eventually sacking off Spotify. I've fully migrated to Mastodon for my social media. We're still on Discord but keeping an eye open for when that eventually spirals down the khazi.

Oh! I also picked up an iPod mini and stuck a flash card in it for my offline music playing. It's bloody brilliant. It has a headphone jack and it doesn't stop working when I have bad mobile reception. It's also pink.

And so I eventually get to the point: I made a gemlog.

Every time I try and make a website, I end up worrying more about how the backend works and building a framework for vaguely future-proofing the content management than actually making stuff to post on it. Then I get sick of the sight of it and bin it. But with Gemini, there's nothing to fiddle with. You just open a text editor and start writing stuff. There's no fonts to tweak or margins to make worse. Just text, links, and unicode if you're lucky. I think I can link images as well? That seems a bit advanced for me.

It's all just so simple. I have no desire to impress anyone, and no one to impress. It just is what it is and that's lovely.

I don't even feel the need to round everything off with a witty ending.
