Alternatives to High-Profile Games on OpenBSD

Published: 2023-07-29

Last Updated: 2023-08-01

Some games stand out in terms of popularity and critical appraisal, so it's only natural that those are attracting more attention and this is what people might look for if they want to judge if an alternative operating system or platform can help satisfy their gaming preferences.

Naturally, OpenBSD with its security focus and intentional absence of emulation/compatibility layers doesn't make for a target for many high-budget/high profile games. Many of the engines used in those settings will possibly never run on OpenBSD: Unity, Unreal, CryEngine...

But OpenBSD gaming has likely more to offer than what most people assume. There are several older, opensourced or source-ported high-profile games that can run, like System Shock, Baldur's Gate, Doom, Quake, Amnesia The Dark Descent etc. Other games use open frameworks and can still run on OpenBSD, like Slay the Spire, Rogue Legacy, Dead Cells, Northgard, Terraria, ...

List of Games that run on OpenBSD

The focus of this post is to highlight some lesser known games that draw strong inspiration from some better-known titles, and generally recreate their spirit and feel. Read on...

Return of the Obra Dinn

The Case of the Golden Idol

Many reviewers have compared this gem to Return of the Obra Dinn. I haven't played the latter... An obvious difference is the graphics being in 2D rather than 3D. But it seems that the general structure of recreating events from environmental clues is very close to satisfy fans of Lucas Pope's puzzle hit.

Vampire Survivors

Brotato

Also a 2D rogue-lite wave shooter or whatever the genre of VS should be called... Heard some call it "Survivors-like" (ugh). Brotato certainly makes for a fun time shooting or punching/stabbing through waves of enemies.

Cilization V

Unciv is an alternative... It's not in ports or the playonbsd.com list at the moment, but I got it to run at some point in ~2021, so hopefully it will join the PlayOnBSD pantheon again soon.

It has clearly much simpler 2D graphics than Civ 5, but it mentions Civ 5 as its main inspiration.

There is also

Jon Shafer's At the Gates

But this one never really got finished and remains kind of buggy in my experience.

Factorio

We used to have one in ports by the name of Shapez.io, but because of the removal of the electron port, this one had to be removed.

There is also Mindustry which is opensource, but so far putting everything in place to run it on OpenBSD hasn't succeeded, but there is still hope that we can make this one work in the future.

Stronghold

Stone Kingdoms

Pokemon/Monster Hunter

Cassette Beasts

I'm not familiar at all with the original monster hunting games, but this one is made from the same cloth it seems.

Dark Souls

Many games have been inspired by Dark Souls. Here a few wearing the influence more clearly on their sleeves.

Salt and Sanctuary

Dead Cells

Diablo 2

Flare RPG (in packages)

Hyperlight Drifter

Lila's Sky Ark

Rimworld

Space Haven (Early Access and currently still buggy on OpenBSD)

Super Hexagon

Open Hexagon

This isn't in ports yet.

The Binding of Isaac

# pkg_add witchblast

Conclusion

Many famous (indie) games in the 2010's to 2020's don't run on OpenBSD, but there are high-quality games that run and capture the same spirit. Why not give them a try!
