I kinda wanna live in the woods

posted: *03 september 2021*

Not in a naturalistic, communal way.

But in a "get away from society because I don't like it or want to be a part of

it when the consequences of the last 10ish years finally come bearing down on

us" kind of way.

I want to grab a spit of land. I've found parcels for less than $20,000 USD in

some places far away from what you'd consider a city or metro area.

And on that land, I'll get some sort of dwelling set up. Perhaps it's a mobile

or manufactured home: a 3-bed, 3-bath beer can on wheels. Or perhaps I'll get

a handful of shipping containers and a welding torch. Or perhaps I just go the

easy way and have Daddy Bezos mail me a house-in-a-box.

They sell those, apparently. Comes with everything but the furniture and the

pipes leading up to the property. Two people could stand one up in a few days.

"I knew Donut was crazy but this is worse"

Well... why would you be surprised?

I don't value what this place seems to value anymore. All I want is a nice home

to live in, that I own. I'll have a few tools, a few toys, and my loved ones

with me. And that's about as far as my ambition for the timespan I've got

remaining on this marble goes.

The fact that I'd need to make a mass exodus of people and material away from

the thriving heartbeats of technologically-inclined employers, infrastructure

and the bleeding edge of society, just to find a place to live that I could pay

off in less than 30 years (think about that: "here, have a loan that could take

you from being a married couple to a grandparent before it's paid off") is

certifiably *insane*.

I'd be okay with that if it was literally a $500,000 mansion that I could raise

my kids in, and even have a kid or two get married in and have their own

section of the home (or a shack in the backyard) until they leave the nest.

But no, $500,000 will get you a 3 or 4-bed house, on less than a quarter acre.

That kind of "giant house the whole family visits in" kind of mentality has

been dead for at least a century.

I mull this over about once a month.

About the same time rent is due.

I guess the other half of it is patience. I don't have a lot of patience for

waiting on the world's permission and approval to bleed me dry financially in

a variety of creative ways. I'd rather hurry up and skip town by the end of the

quarter, not the end of the next half-decade.

C'est la vie. If all things go well in the next 24ish months... I might get my

wish. Who knows.
