Liquorice

The name of plant from which the love-it-or-hate-it flavoring comes has a Greek origin. Liquorice, γλυκόριζα/glykoriza in Greek, is derived from γλυκός/glykos meaning sweet and ρίζα/riza meaning root. What's interesting in this case is that the name was corrupted to liquiritia when latinized, presumably due to the similarity in pronunciation since it originates from liquere which means "to become fluid". This is a reference to the flavoring extraction method used.
