DAY 1

Day one of the old computer challenge has come and gone, and with it hopefully the only time i need to cheat. *knocks on wood*

why i cheated

As it turns out i couldn't connect to this here server from any of my old machines, since i only allow key based login, so i pulled the thinkpad back out from the stack, turned it on, copied my public key to the server and then shut it down.

did I do today?

Yesterday at around 21:00 i was all caught up with my RSS feeds and stuff so i decided i would use the opportunity to switch over to one of the old machines. I ended up on the eeepc for now, since i can control the fan on that one, decreasing the odds of me just stopping because the noise gets on my nerves. The L390 got turned off and put into the stack of laptops on my shelf. At this point i notices that i cannot access this server from the eeepc, but decided that that would be a problem for tomorrow me to solve, watched some videos, and looked at the chatroom and the fediverse.

actual first day

I woke up a bit before 7, had breakfast and harvested some of my striped beets (or are they beetroots in in english, idk), watched some videos, had a shower, and helped my dad carry some stuff to his basement.

Then it was time to actually be "tomorrow me", i decided that i would try and not use the modern machines, so i installed firefox to access hetzners web console from the eeepc, that didn't work at first because i couldn't find the login button, presumably because of the small screennot vibing with modern desktop websites. So then i uninstalled firefox to free up some space, and then installed qutebrowser, which crashed trying to render hetzner.com. So i uninstalled qutebrowser and installed surf, which failed to launch at all. My next step was to use the main website on my phone to find out the correct url for the login page. This worked, but the "checking you're not a bot" thing took what felt like 10 minutes, once i had reinstalled firefox. Only then pasting into the web console window didn't work properly and corrupted the text, at some point the settings for caps lock also was inverted between what's happening on the machine, and the webconsole. So changed to qutebrowser, which at least loaded faster, but also had the same issue. SO then i tried it on my phone, same Issue, slightly corrupted text. At this point i decided to say fuck it and turned on my main laptop, and copied my phones and the eeepcs public key over in probably less than a minute, tuned it off, and was DONE. Now i can just mount the gemini directory with sshfs and write my stuff.

Then i had some lunch and an appointment.

In the afternoon i tried to catch up with all the stuff in the irc, watched some youtube videos and read some webcomics from my RSS feeds. Then it was time for dinner.

After dinner i prepared a salad from the beets i harvested in the morning, watched some more stuff from youtube, and wrote this gemlog.

for tomorrow

As i noticed a few days ago i still have an Interrail ticket that would have expired today had i not activated it, so i might hop over the border to switzerland and enjoy some proper trains, i don't think i'll take the eeepc with me though, i'm not sure i trust the battery enough for that.

If you read this far, thank you, and, I'm sorry :D
