A Forward-Looking Statement: Impending Hiatus

📅 2022-05-22

🏷 Lagrange

🏷 Life

Lagrange has been progressing quite briskly since last fall, with versions 1.7–1.13 released between September 2021 and May 2022. I am always hesitant to make predictions about what exactly will happen with a given project in the future, but when it comes to the second half of 2022, there is certainly going to be a change of pace.

We are expecting our second child to be born in July. 👶 This fills me with a range of emotions. In practice, our family routines will be disrupted, and my hobby projects will surely be put on hold for a while. Fortunately, since we largely now know what we're doing, it shouldn't quite as overwhelming as the first time. Of course, there are many variables and unknowns so who knows how it'll go.

I have no intention of stepping away from Gemini or Lagrange, and will continue reading daily and maybe even writing occasionally. Lagrange patch releases continue to be possible as the process is mostly handled via scripts, but larger-scale feature work will have to be postponed for a few months.

I've found that putting a project on hiatus usually has advantages. Coming back after a longer break, one will have a new perspective on things, and maybe even a few new skills and/or tricks up one's sleeve. Seeing a project with fresh eyes is extremely valuable. It helps with prioritizing tasks and finding rough edges that one has grown too accustomed to otherwise notice.

The most likely schedule for the rest of the year is:

June: Focus on the iOS and Android ports. I'm on Gemini most often using my phone, and there are a bunch of small bugs and annoyances I've been planning to fix.

July-October: Small bug fixes and UI translation updates.

November-December: v1.14
