It's been a little while since I've posted any updates about my keyboard build. Progress has pretty well stalled while I'm waiting for replacement switches to arrive. I've ordered three sets; Cherry Blue, Kailh Pink and Kailh Navy. Until they all arrive, I don't know which I'll use.
Yesterday the Cherry Blues arrived. I tested one of the switches for scratchiness. I've got (and had) a few keyboards with Cherry Blue switches from between 2009-2011 and there action were all very smooth. By about 2015, I noticed that most Cherry Blues I tried in the keyboards of my co-workers were crap. Perhaps the owners were mistaken and they weren't really Cherry, but whatever the case, it really put me off Cherry. So for this build I bought Gateron switches instead, but as I've already posted they aren't better.¹ At some time in the last few years (I don't know when) the molds for Cherry switches were remade. I think those retooled switches are all that are sold now and those are what arrived yesterday. I gave them a quick test (of a single switch) and I'm happy with them. They aren't scratchy at all. Very similar to my old ones.
But before I go soldering them in, I'm waiting for the other two sets of switches to arrive. Kailh have a very good reputation for clicky switches but I haven't owned them or even used them before. I've also read that they're scratchy too, but who knows, the mechanical keyboard people are a fussy bunch. So until those switches arrive, don't expect many updates. They can't be too far away.
