Keyboard Is Polished

2020-12-28T20:06

A few nights ago, I polished the keyboard. It's nice and shiny but if you look very closely you can see some spots where I didn't quite sand right through the orange peel. I didn't think it would matter but it turns out that it does. You can also still see the dust that was introduced during the clear coat. Neither are noticeable unless you're really looking for it.

I'm happy with the result, but I think I could have arrived there with less work. The process I would take next time is:

1. Skim entire surface with with body filler (aka Bondo).

2. Sand back smooth

3. Spray with scratch filler and primer¹

4. Sand back smooth

5. Spray with color

6. Wait a week for the paint to harden

6. Sand flat and remove *all* orange peel.

7. Polish

Next time I won't paint a clear coat. It doesn't seem to make it look that much better but it introduces a risk of contaminating it with dust or bugs. It also adds days to the process. I sprayed two thick coats with a day drying time between. This actually added four days because it needed to be turned over to coat the bottom. Because my shed is a 30m drive from home, just the travel time added up to four hours.

And now for a few photos.
