Swapped the Pedals

I swapped the pedals on the Holland and prepared some Williams cranks to go on next.

I chose the Phillips Credalux pedals that came with the Hartley¹. I'm not sure which bike I'll eventually use those pedals on. They might be too rough for the Hartley, but they aren't being used right now so I figure I might as well put them on the Holland.

I dismantled both pedals and cleaned them up with a wire brush and Carby Cleaner. They were both mechanically in good condition apart from worn bearing cones.

I opened up some spare Phillips block pedals from the same era expecting to find identical cones. After I got the dust cup off, I was presented with a cloud of rust power. I think I bought them from someone on Koninginnedag when I was living in the Netherlands². By the look of them, I wouldn't be surprised if these pedals spent some time at the bottom of a canal. I soaked them in some WD-40 which loosened one of them up enough for me to open it up. The other snapped its shaft as I tried to get the nut off. But as I expected, the cone was exactly what I needed and it was in great condition. So I swapped the worse of the two Credalux cones with that salvaged from the other pedals.

The pedals then got put back together with fresh grease and ball bearings. They move like brand new, again.

I also prepared a Williams crank and chain-ring to go in next time. I ran out of time to do the bottom bracket and I didn't want to risk sacrificing a set of cotter pins to install the cranks temporally onto the existing bottom bracket.

When I got home, I rode it up and down the street and they feel great.
