Music Spotlight: Single - Dozer - Dust for Blood

Wow that's a mouthful! I'll have to come up with a more streamlined title formula for this! This is a new format for me - mostly taking my notes and first impressions and bringing sharing them with you all here!

[spotify] Dozer - Dust for Blood

Dozer is a Swedish Stoner Rock band and really that tells the full story. If you've heard any stoner rock, and especially Swedish ones (Truckfighters) they've got a very similar and familiar sound.

This single is actually very much that. This song builds on tropes of the genre and takes what should be a very "album track" stoner rock song - but makes use of all of their experience to elevate it into a super catchy ear worm.

The song takes a very classic formula that invokes "motion". It is all formed around a single riff that builds and builds with the drums pushing you forward with the track. It uses a "Verse pre-chorus, verse pre-chorus" to start us off making the chorus, the heaviest part of the entire track, really hit. Then on the second time through they drop out the band for the pre-chorus leaving isolated vocals. Each time the riff and the band change slightly leaving what is a very repetitive song feeling fresh.

This song is any other desert/stoner rock you've heard - but they've mastered the genre in a way that nearly 30 years later they're dropping singles that I immediately throw on my playlist!

An Aside

Holy shit. I was looking at what the band has been up to and they're playing Desertfest 2023 in London next month with a fucking STACKED line-up of stoner rock/metal. If that's your thing.

The NY show line-up isn't as appealing to me - impressive though with Monster Magnet and Melvins, and whatya know Truckfighers :P But none of these groups jump out to where I must see. The year I went it was more Doom metal heavy and I was in love :D

I'll go when they make an entire funeral doom festival!
