Three updates: tooling, email, station

Tooling

In a effort to reduce friction when publishing a new post, I updated the tools so the gemlog's "last 5 posts" and "archive" are updated whenever I invoke the command to add a new post. I thought it would take me a lot more time, but it was relatively painless.

Something interesting happened when I was searching for the function to "open a file in a new buffer". I tend to go to the browser for such things, and unless there's a SO post with exactly what I am looking for, the second or third hit in DuckDuckGo tends to be from the Elisp manual. And that happened this time. So I closed the browser and forced myself to figure out how to open the manual from Emacs' "info", which I know how to navigate very well - I love `C-h f` and `C-h v` :) and yes I know that won't render properly in gemtext.

Turns out the magic incantation was C-h R (not r!). And not only was I able to select the Elisp manual and find the same information I saw online, I also noticed that Elpher has a nice info manual included with it. It made me wish my own packages had an info manual included. I made a good effort of documenting them in the README files, but still, Info is so nice and can be consumed without leaving the editor.

Also, I guess this means I am even one step closer to my "reduce web browser usage" objective!

Email

Yesterday I created a new alias in my Fastmail account for this capsule, using the (very creative) capsule@sebasmonia.com address. I have different addresses for git forges, things to pay, subscriptions, work, etc. to help me keep things sane and deal with email in a timely manner.

Well, turns out I got an unread email on that alias, TODAY! Quick turnaround. I haven't read it yet (but my correspondent will probably read this AFTER I get back to them) because I really wanted to get the darned tooling out of the way, it's been in the back of my head for a couple days now.

Station

I got myself a user in the Station! In case you haven't visited it yet, it is a no-frills Twitter clone, in pure Gemini. You can find my user and ramblings at

gemini://station.martinrue.com/sebhoagie

I love the concept of the Station, and people have already shown to be super friendly. The Gemisphere isn't that big, it is very likely you already know about this site. But if you don't...stop by! :)

Up next

Oops, cheating, I didn't include this in the title. I guess the next step in the tooling is to finally setup Emacs for spell check, in both English and Spanish. Less gemloggin' friction (I will have to proof read this in a minute), and also will help now that I manage my email from Gnus, too. In the future might need to include an Esperanto spell check ;)
