Not my WD Book Live

I don't own or use a WD My Book Live but the news about data being wiped by hackers did shake me up a bit and made me wonder about what to do about the QNap NAS in server closet.

WD My Book Live users wake up to find their data deleted

A couple of months ago I put "disconnect from Internet" on my to do list, by which I mean configure my router to not allow it to connect to the Internet. Why? It's full of software I don't use or want which can't be delete and be trusted. Also, it wants to upgrade too frequently which includes reboot which take 20 minutes! Most of my Raspberry Pies have a root filesystem on that NAS so that's, well, annoying..

This biggest downside of not allowing it to access to Internet: it is no longer able to email me alerts about disk health. Maybe I can work around that, which will probably mean a lot of trial and error, that's why it's still on my to do list..

But back to WD. I hope they will be slammed badly for this, court cases, the works, and be made an example of the awful Internet of Things madness! All this "End of Life" business is just crazy! If a company can't or won't commit, they should not be allowed to sell services like this. There's not excuse! Either open source f***ing everything before selling these products or never go out of business (or accept a buyout). It seems like there's only one option? ;-)

Oh, and yes my QNAP runs three WD Red drives, ah well..
