The Tree-frog Inn

We live on the first floor of a 30-story building, and are fortunate to have a small terrace/balcony/patio...place to plant flowers and do other messy activities with the kids. The thing is, people throw all kinds of crap out their windows. Who does that, though? Seriously. If I think about it too much it really bums me out that people can be so inconsiderate. It's usually just stupid stuff like cigarettes, used tissue, candy wrappers, etc., which are relatively "harmless." But still we eventually bought a small umbrella to keep junk from falling on us while we are playing out there. (So far the only junk that has fallen on us while we were out there has been some snacks someone was eating out of the window while they smoked a cigarette on the top floor). Anyway, the umbrella is nothing fancy, and kind of flimsy actually, but it serves its purpose. And it is now home to some frogs.

I don't really know why they enjoy it there so much. It is this self-standing rig that collapses and kind of just hangs there. I always find them stuck inside the folds whenever I go to open it up.

At first it was just one frog. The kids named him "sneaky" because he always hides once he knows we have seen him. I figured that he was eating the moths that stowed away in there, or the little beetles that breed under the planters. There were a few times he hopped off and hid among our flower pots before disappearing, but he always came back. Today when I opened up the umbrella, I discovered that he had invited a friend over. So I guess the word is getting out that our porch is the place to be.

We are actually in the process of selling this apartment, so whoever does buy it will also be adopting a brood of treefrogs :)
