Space is Neat

A little while ago, I wrote about how I really missed old web directories. They were such a wonderful place for serendipitous discovery, but have largely gone extinct in the here and now. Thankfully, I recently came across a snazzy little directory for Gemini called Medusae.Space.

It’s divided into a bunch of different categories for people to explore and there are quite a few capsules already listed on it. Basically, it’s everything I miss about places like the Open Directory Project in terms of having capsules neatly categorized so a visitor can hop in and take a look around.

I’ve spent the last couple of evenings poking around, and my list of bookmarks for places I would like to regularly revisit has grown substantially. If anything, Medusae is becoming one of my main starting points when I want to do something on the computer. I’m still making an effort to strictly control the amount of time that I spend on the Web because of all the pointless, stupid nonsense there. This directory has opened a door for a ton more exploration and quite a bit more interesting, meaningful reading. I’ll just get myself a cup of tea (NO MILK OR SUGAR), fire up my media player, sit myself down, and see what I can find on Medusae. It’s been such a comfy experience.

It sounds like the people who created the capsule are selecting what to add to the directory by hand, so there is heavy human editing which should ensure quality there. I don’t think there’s much in the way of a link submission. If there is, it’s tucked away somewhere I’ve not seen. In any case, their current approach to listing capsules has provided quite a lot of quality reading that I’ve very much enjoyed.

Anyway, this is just a short post because I wanted to follow up on my old one about directories. It looks like there’s a new one, it’s for Gemini, and it’s pretty neat.
